Loneliness at Christmas

Posted elsewhere so apologies if you’ve seen this before.

I’ve got to be honest, the last few Christmases have been a struggle for one reason or another (from pre Covid too). I honestly don’t think I’d have made it through them without people to talk to when I was feeling alone.

Which leads me to this post…

I’m thankfully in a much better place mentally

this year, despite the fact I’m working over Christmas I’m still able to enjoy it with others.

But I know other people are not as fortunate, so I would like to offer myself as an outlet for anyone who needs to talk to someone this Christmas, I’m dropping my filters and I’m here if you need to talk…. I know it can save a life

Thank you for the positive comments, I’ve added a version of my inbox offer as my status and will continually refresh it during the Christmas period (as well as on my social media).

If anyone else is willing or able then feel free to do the same

This has nothing to do with getting laid and everything to do with being friendly and nice to people who may be feeling extremely lost or vulnerable.

Sex isn’t the be all and end all

That's class surely a few will be brave enough to take you up on the offer I was tempted but I think gambling & drink will be just enough to see me through.

But I do take my hat off to you SIR

Loneliness is not just at Christmas, it's something that many people struggle with all year round.

I do agree, I’m just basing this on my personal experience that for me it was felt most severely at Christmas

Unfortunately you can’t just “be happy” in every situation, please don’t trivialise what can be a devastating time for some people.

Using myself as an example…

Christmas 2019, both parents had died within the last 6 months and 2 months prior I had discovered my then wife was cheating on me….

I spent that Christmas without my children bar part of Christmas Day and without any of the family I would have had in previous years…. No amount of telling me to “be happy” would have helped… what stopped me killing myself was a few friends that went out of their way to talk to me and be there for me to talk to when I needed them

I don't know you yet OP, but I think I love you too!

On a level...

Just like you, (and I'm guessing the legends who have already commented) have been there and fortunately have made it out the other side, but I know many stronger people that did not.

I'm certain that many more people will read this and not respond at all.

None of us can profess to know what someone else is going through because no two situations are the same. But rarely do we let others see our vulnerability, because we are far too busy wanting people to like us.

I don't know if I would have plucked up the courage to get in touch, even anonymously if I'd have seen this back then,

But I know for sure that reading thisit would have helped me get through that day , or even that week because, you, A complete stranger with no ulterior motive or pre-determined opinion, had the balls to say "you're not alone", "I've been there too" and "I'm better now".

I wanted to say how humbled I was reading this... And on behalf of everyone who, for whatever reason can't say it themselves, THANK YOU????

Ps, I'd be more than happy to take you up on the offer of a beer or a chat at some point.

Same goes for anyone else reading this.

Strangers don't judge and.

Those who judge don't matter & those who matter don't judge.

More posts like this please.

I remember my first Christmas being alone was really depressing. The years have made it a bit easier, also i enjoy my own company these days so it's not as bad as it used to be. I do miss the company and someone to wake up with though. But yeah, being alone at any time of the year sucks to be honest. Never mind, onwards and upwards.

"Loneliness is not just at Christmas, it's something that many people struggle with all year round."

Agree but Christmas often creates the perfect storm for many as their loneliness is so evident.

I’m working the days on both days but will be logging on in the evenings with an ear here on my status

If anything at all saves a person isn’t it all worth it?

Once again, thanks for all the positive comments.

If others are able and willing then again I would be grateful if you could put something similar to my own status up for the Christmas period. I understand if you can’t obviously

Loneliness is a friend of mine. I can be in a room full of people yet feel so alone. It’s brings with it many problems that can keep me awake at night. Talking only helps when the listener understands and does not judge. They are rare people as I’ve tried many times to chat

Have a happy new year everyone

A lovely, thoughtful thread, as is the one elsewhere. Kudos to the folks who’ve checked on others.

I’ve barely seen a soul all Christmas, but thatMs fine, as I ignore the festive period (pretty much).

Hope others have done OK. Always happy to support/listen .
