A few years back I went to Llandudno. Was told it was pronounced Clan-dudno. On TV this morning Chris Packam said L-andudno.

Which is correct?.

Ah brings me back to my 17 year old self when I first moved to Wales to be reunited with my family after first year of college. I turns to mum and says “Oh where’s Lan Elli I can do a weeks intense driving course for £500” and she’s pissing herself

I’m like mum I’ve been riding my moped for a year and I didn’t crash once, I’ll pass a car test I’m sure

Then she fishy’s back the scoffing and says “it’s Clan Ethli”

LL is a cl sound

Best tip I ever recieved was in welsh you pronounce every letter, there are no silent letters as in english..

But you have to know your LL, DD, and CH's. .

For Llandudno or llangollen.

Re the Llan..

Think quiche Lorraine, as in flan,

But replace the f with th,

So THlan dudno or Thlan gollen (the gollen is gothlen not goll en)

Here endeth today's lesson

There's no real way to describe the correct Welsh pronunciation as some of the letter sounds don't exist in an English context.

For the 'Ll' letter, touch the tip of your tongue lightly to the roof of your mouth where it naturally rests. Open your mouth slightly and breathe out with moderate force (don't blow).

The air escaping to either side of your tongue will make a lisping hiss. As soon as you have this, flip your tongue forward and say 'laa'. That's the letter 'Ll'. Stick an 'n' at the end and you have 'Llan'.

Ll is not a Cl sound at all. Ll has no equivalent in English. Pointless thinking of English sounds when learning another language.

No, just no. Ll is not Th at all. But it's better than Cl.

Neither. The double L (Ll) is a stand alone letter in the welsh alphabet. It makes a sound which is difficult to describe but is made by placing yoyr tongue on the top of your mouth and blowing out of the side of your mouth.

(This is much easier to explain in real life lol)

You can't actually write the correct pronunciation, you just have to hear it because it isn't actually cl either.
