My worst one was 8 hours on the back of my leg and down through the back of my knee. Anywhere else seems quite easy really.

I would say it’s more uncomfortable than anything. It’s obviously tolerable otherwise you’d be whipping yourself away from the needle involuntarily. But as others have said, some areas hurt more than others. My shoulder was absolutely fine. My wrist was a bit sore though.

Completely depends on the area, the artist, your pain threshold etc!

2 hours on my shoulder with an artist in bridgend no problem what soo ever

4 hours on the same shoulder with an artist in Newport who was finishing of the work already started and hurt from the get go! The only time I’ve had to tap out!

7 hours on my calf, 5 hours on my ankle, 1 hour on the top of my foot, 4 hours on my thigh - only the ankle and foot gave me a bit of pain

Haven't got any myself but I don't imagine someone stabbing you with a needle is going to produce a tickling sensation. The pain doesn't put me off, it's the fact that I could never decide what to have and constantly change my mind. Not good when it's a permanent thing I suppose.

Every tattoo is different, every location is different and we all tolerate pain differently. Anyone who says they're not painful is a little fibber! I've sat through 8 hours and been OK and then had a 2 hour sitting and hated every minute! Arse and back of knee I really disliked and my back I found most tolerable.

Long sittings can be exhausting so prepare for that. 3hrs is my normal threshold for tattoo pain. After that it becomes a bit of an endurance effort. The area will likely feel like bad sunburn after.

I couldn’t agree more!!

You might want to break that up into 2 sittings at least. I’ve got a full back (20 hours) and I could never sit longer than 3 & half hours. The constant wiping over the freshly traumatised skin gets really wearing into the third hour

My chest was hurting after a 2hour sitting,

My arm shoulder and arm after 3hours it was burning.. my lower leg was a walk in the park.. it was quite enjoyable.

Every1 is different, the pain isn’t sumthing I enjoy but it’s bearable.

Just remember to breath and stay relaxed.. if it’s 6 hours take plenty of sugary sweets and drinks

I'd say 4 hours is a good enough sitting, I've done several all day sittings (8 hours) and I'd totally advise against them! The only reason I did them is because it worked out cheaper than paying by the hour! Lots of people using numbing cream now if you're going for a particularly sore area.

Definitely depends on where the tattoo is.

My longest sitting was just over 9 hours (by an apprentice ), but my threshold for pain seems to run out around 5 hours.

For me least to most painful would be…

arms, lower legs, back of my head, fingers, thighs.

Had my eyebrows tattooed a couple years back and that wasn’t fun either.

Normally am fine with them but my last one on my ribs I couldnt get finished and tapped out after 3 hours! Last hour was painful, staring at the clock on the wall and I swear it wasnt moving!

As others have said you just never know, sometimes I'm fine & the pain is tolerable & at times soothing for someone who enjoys pain, but lately my tolerance has all but disappeared & I tapped out at an hour for my hip tattoo. For me the pain level is definitely linked to my health so I've taken a break, but as already said, anyone who says it doesn't hurt is a liar X

I recently got the whole top of my head tattooed which wasn’t too bad, I’ve also got my nipples tattooed into hearts which surprisingly didn’t hurt at all, but the worst pain I’ve ever felt was having both my palms tattooed.

I want more art, need something creative and imaginative though, unique from the artist's hand.

The massive cover-up I had on my right shoulder was definitely a test for my pain tolerance/self-discipline. Instinctively I react very badly to any kind of pain. And I told the artist as much too, halfway through the inking. Bless her, she asked once she realised what I had actually said if I was okay to continue. She had already completed the areas close to the under-arm which were the worst, so I told her she was fine, especially when it was pain I had already consented to. Mind over matter in my case.

Any tattoo anywhere will hurt anyone. It's how the canvas reacts that makes all the difference .

To try and describe the sensation of having a tattoo. It's not a needle or a few needles all at once that you feel (on larger works). It is more like allowing yourself to be sandpapered using a belt-sander, in a very specific tiny area. You know you will bleed a little bit, but only a little. And yet you are programmed almost by default to avoid all bleeding at all costs. Plus you know what you will be left with is practically permanent. Handle all of that in your mind first, then pop in your music ear buds and get to the other side and show it off after the healing phase .

Really dependant on the area, how much fat/muscle is there, technique of the artist even colour of the ink, with me it veried from a scratchy tickle to felling like the needle was hitting the bone, basically just grit your teeth and get it done pain is temporary.

There's also a spray that instantly numbs you too! So, if you feel like you need to tap out but want it finished, quick spray and no pain! Boom!

Gayle is a tattoo artist. The pain varies on many factors, even down to the colours. White pigment is thicker and hurts more. Obviously the place on the body, the needle size used. Some tattooists hurt more than others. It's very interesting

I've got a few there was a girl having one on her ribs next to me once and she was reading a book I couldn't believe it but I do think a woman pain tolerance is a lot higher than a man look at the pain women go through on child birth

Yes they hurt, I usually have 6hr sittings. My elbow was a killer, as was across my knuckles and my collar bone. Back in again at 10:30 am tomorrow for another 6 hour sitting. So for me they hurt but vary depending on location.

Had my vest tattoo done when I were 18 and it tickled, my sleeve done had taken 24 hrs to date (all hand drawn) and were fine except last session after got diagnosed with Ms and my verve’s play up.. can’t feel anything on the skin but soon as needle enters the skin it f*****g kills!! Lol

Of course they hurt but once your skin evokes numb or accustomed to the pain you'll be fine for a few hours . After that the continuous wiping makes it sore as times goes on but manageable

if you have a high pain threshold then they dont hurt , depending where you have them the healing can hurt more than the actual tattoo , behind my knee when it was healing was very painful as it was constantly cracking because of constant leg movement

It definitely also depends on if you've slept properly, if you're a little under the weather and not eating beforehand will lower your pain threshold too.

I've worked in the industry as a body piercer for years and had dozens of tattoos xx

Having just had some new work done on a region I thought I would struggle with, the answer isn't straightforward.

Yes they hurt, they always will no matter what anyone says. But how long they hurt for, and whether or not the process triggers your flinch response is down to the individual and their ability to control their body.

The small one I had done on my chest was forgotten about before my wrist work was even started a minute or two later. I am sensitive on my wrists anyway, but the battle between my physical need to flinch and recoil from any kind of pain was overridden by the fact that my head was saying "It's not a wound, and if it hurt that much I wouldn't be able to stay still anyway".

Different srokes for different folks, like almost everything in life.

I am now trying to figure out what to have next in the remaining space on my right arm, so it couldn't have been that bad .

Even though I said I wasnt going to have anymore tattoos until I became a Granny Ive seen one I like and with a bit of tweaking I will have it as a cover up on my back.

Tattoos hurt more in some places than others but its a bit like childbirth for me in that its a pain you forget . Hopefully the end result is worth it
