Hi everyone,

We'll be staying in Barry from 3rd June for 3 nights, and wonder if anyone can recommend anywhere to go for sightseeing, food etc?

Thank you.

Thank you, luckily it'll just be us two, but we'll look at Penarth cliffs. Cardiff is definitely on our must visit list.

West Wales and Cardiff

The coastline west of Barry is amazing, and underrated - Southerndown, Monknash, Nash Point etc.

Cardiff is a really good city and The Gower is reachable from there too. I’ve seen beaches all round the world, and Rhossili is right up there.

Alicante, Spain. (Sometimes in Wales)

There are great country pubs all over the Vale of Glamorgan. Try the Plough and Harrow, it’s near the nudist beach at Monknash.

If you’re in Barry itself, go location spotting and see how many places you can recognise from Gavin and Stacey.

The Highwayman in Rhoose do good food and Hang Fire in Barry is supposed to be fantastic although I haven't been myself. It is that busy that you have to book weeks in advance

For sheer Victorian exuberance a tour of cardiff castle is a must see (if open) but remember it was built on the wealth from the coal industry.

Also again if open very short walk is 5he high temple of the principle religion in Wales..the mecca of the nation...formally known as 'Cardiff arms park".

St fagans is on the Barry side of cardiff...

Folkestone

Ogmore-by-sea has a nice beach and clifftop walks. Cowbridge is a pretty village with a lovely psychic garden. You are also not far from the Brecon Beacons which has some lovely drives and walks.

Thank you all so much - we're getting even more excited about it now!

We'll be staying at the Barry Premier Inn

(unlike the one time we visited before - 25 yrs ago - when we stayed at the old Barry Island Resort (ex Pontins))

There is a Michelin-starred restaurant run by James Sommerin in Barry called The Shed if thats your thing.

Hang Fire Southern Kitchen is very good too.

Lots of nice shops and food outlets in the Goodsheds and just across the road from where you are staying.

Hi. I live about a mile from where you are staying and you have a lot of choice. The hotel itself does quite decent food and a nice outdoor area to drink if weather good. Behind the hotel (you’ll see as you enter car park) is Hangfire kitchen. Fantastic food but really need to book early. https://hangfiresouthernkitchen.com/

Next to there is The Academy. A cool coffee/sandwich joint by day and nice bar at night with outside area. Opposite there is Goodsheds. A whole bunch of street food craft drinks. It’s great. Book early https://www.goodshedsbarry.co.uk/

The Little Olive is a lovely Italian not far from you and if curry is your thing the Shahi Noor is close. If you fancy cheap and cheerful there is a whetherspoons just around the corner.

On Barry island (blue flag beach) is Finnegans which does the best fish and chips (in or out) and from there you can start/finish an amazing coastal path walk. You are near the train station with 3 trains an hour to Cardiff.

Some great drives through the rural vale along the coast or inland towards the beacons.

Please let me know if you want to know more and/or want some company.

Enjoy your stay

There is also a nice micro pub in the town called the butterfly collector. Always a great atmosphere especially if there is music on.

The little olive is a fantastic Italian restaurant. Food there is outstanding Hang fire in barry alright if can get a table their food hygiene went down. After sampling the bbq food from a certain fab couple I would rather see them go back to hang fire.

Clay pit curry in penarth.

Porthkerry country park is probably worth a visit. Cosmeston Lakes about half way two Cardiff is probably worth a look if the car park isn’t full.

Ah yes, Cosmeston. We took part in 'Knight School' at the medieval village there a few years ago. Been a while, so we'll probably go there on the Sunday.
