Your not doing it wrong at all, using time and gravity to do it for you is good.I bought some stretching tapers (search the interweb and you will find suppliers) you must lubricate the hole and taper properly, then work the taper into the hole, sometimes it will be difficult other times the taper glides through. You can push the taper with the new ring and hey presto it's in.
