At teatime today 'our' Pied Flycatcher, made his annual return from Africa - which chuffed us no end. The dapper little chap is singing his heart out for a mate today - she usually turns up a few days after him. You need to look for them along wooded streams and rivers by-the-way.

Once the chicks fledge though, she takes them straight up into the canopy and you never see them again - usually till next year. The males will sometimes have more than one mate (well they would, would'nt they!), but will only ever assist with the feeding of the 1st lot.

"Toaday, whilst gardening under lockdown, we heard our first Chiff Chaff (a small migrant bird, a member of the Warbler family). This annual appearance reminds me of all the potty C of E vicars that every year write into 'The Times' to say that they have heard the first Cuckoo of Spring. By coincidence, a pal rang today - a successful divorce lawyer - to say that he had seen his first cuckold of Spring! Stay safe groovers!" Probably been beaten to this by the aforementioned 'potty C of E vicars', but today we heard our first cuckoo! No, NOT Cuckold! Anyone else heard/seen one yet?

A mate for him turned up last week and began nest building in a box we had put up that he had shown to her. Today another male turned up and there was fireworks - a right scrap ensued between the two chaps, with the female coming out the box to watch and egg on the fun. Normality seems restored now with the original cock being the apparent victor!;)
