ITV news this morning Piers Morgan giving hell about non essential workers out and about next thing they got a reporter outside a hospital in London where a 13 year old boy has sadly passed away, no doubt other staff with the reporter it is absolutely not necessary in this day and age they can report all the info by other means. SAVE LIVES STAY AT HOME.

I feel sorry for Pier's. It must be really hard for him to not turn into his normal reptilian form.

While i cannot stand site of Piers Morgan 90% of time i do share some of his concerns they way the Govt have handled the situation, especially in terms of their slowness to increase testing numbers and get PPE and the correct PPE to all front line NHS staff.

Germany are literally testing around 5-6 times more patients every day than us, also if you mass test you can use a strategy like S Korea which was hugely successful in containing spread of virus.

I think the problem is each day we seem to be hearing a different reason as to why we are still not even testing 10,000 a day let alone the Govt's target of 25,000.

It's easy for a multi millionaire TV presenter to decide to stay home, not so easy when you are self employed and need to continue paying bills, feeding a family and preserving your professional reputation.

Speaking of non essential workers, am I right in assuming that he now presents his show from his home?

It's hyperbole, waffle and total bollocks as they are trying to flim flam out of how they fecked up on this important point..

He was in studio this morning. Probably avoided the overcrowding on tube by coming in his personal helicopter?

I'm not sure how long the government have got before the press start turning.

The current strategy around testing doesn't seem to be materialising

The background about test kits and ppe is questionable

And the stats being produced look dodgy

If the press turns on them there will be huge problems, we all know the power they hold

Guidelines and new health regulations act doesn't mention essential work...just says work from home if possible otherwise you are allowed to work.

This 'essential' word has crept into myth and legend.

Nah the presenters get driven in by car.

The studio personnel probably have to use public transport though.

The independent and the guardian have been very critical.

Everyone else including the mirror funnily enough and the bbc (obvs)have adopted a dont rock the boat approach. It will be a cold day in hell when the likes of the mail,Express and the sun turn on them

Morgan is a cunt but he is at least asking the gmnt difficult questions.

This..

According to the BBC update on the front pages the daily hate are calling it a shambles so perhaps the goodwill is beginning to be binned..

True...but since we aren't in a total lockdown its misleading...everyone can still go to work if their business is not on the shutdown list.

There are stories going round of non key workers still being made to go in.I dont know how widespread this is..but I'm guessing this was the point he was trying to make.

The profit margin with some companies is more important than the welfare of its staff..

There should be more scrutiny of such workplaces and closures if necessary..

The testing is a shambles and I've been saying that for weeks.

However I still don't think that now is the time to crucify the government over it. What needs to happen is the actual problem needs to be identified and corrected (why is a British company that makes the tests and gave the government first refusal on them now exporting and selling them around the world because the government said they didn't need them?) but once the crisis is over we must find out what went wrong and why. Then maybe some will be crucified.

Although it's pretty difficult to actually decided was is "essential" and what isn't.

Are call centres essential? Quite possibly yes in some cases.

I think there needs to be a full cross parties investigation into this when its all over.

However since they are already dodging questions and lying I'm not holding my breath.

What's that thing about exporting the tests?

No mention of essential or key workers on the government website (dated 26 March). This is an edited version of what they say:-

You can travel for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home.

With the exception of ( specifically listed organisations/venues) the government has not required any other businesses to close – indeed it is important for business to carry on.

Employers should take every possible step to facilitate their employees working from home.

Sometimes this will not be possible, as not everyone can work from home. Certain jobs require people to travel to, from and for their work – for instance if they operate machinery, work in construction or manufacturing, or are delivering front line services.

If you cannot work from home then you can still travel for work purposes, provided you are not showing coronavirus symptoms and neither you nor any of your household are self-isolating.

Employers should ensure that employees (who are still working in their place of work) are able to follow Public Health England guidelines

I cant post links on my phone but the bit I saw was from the telegraph on The 1st April.

But once again they are sending out contradictory messages.Gove said yesterday construction workers are not on the list but still go into work.

I'm unsure what businesses may actually have still been running. I'm doing care work and having an occasional shop visit for food and that's all of the world that I know.

The government should have had a near total lockdown, so that this was more contained and would thus be a shorter restraint. Alongside the other essentials, increased testing and protective wear for staff, we're instead dragging a leaking bucket along, not expecting to have had any escape.

Non essential is probably due to become a battleground in the online deliveries sector, fairly soon.

If you were a courier, or worked in a warehouse, and 99% of what you were expected to handle wasn't food or medicine, would you put your life at risk (for example) so that someone could get catalogue from Next, for the minimum wage, or less?

I fucking wouldn't - and I wouldn't expect anyone else to.

Couriers should be assigned to help out supermarkets and pharmacies.

The vast bulk of what is purchased online is NOT essential. Just like Piers.

Piers Morgan - Each morning a whole nation of viewers get to think it's bad but thank fuck I'm not isolating with that.

Just seeing the other presenters pissed off by his constant foghorn interupting is cheery in itself.

That Dr Hillary guy must have noticed there's a personality trait or two in there that are not so healthy.

Yes, Piers does get it right sometimes - I quite liked his offer to recieve all nhs workers parking tickets and pay them - then he was going to chase the gov. Felt that was a real crowd pleaser.

As far as I'm aware this expression "essential" or "key" worker was only used to determine whose kids could still go to school. Anyone one else can still go to work but only if they can't work from home and, if they do then they should follow the guidelines for safe working. Nobody has said that only people employed in essential roles may commute. Unfortunately, in some instances, the police have also misunderstood the rules and are quizzing people about their employment.
