Do and don’t for keeping friends through social media?

In these uncharted times, societal lockdown means communication with family, friends and neighbours is becoming ever more reliant on reading and typing of words. Put simply, social media is, and will during the duration of lockdown, be the prime communications media for the vast majority of the general public. Whilst digital messaging has been used extensively for years now, this is the first time global society has used it in a general absence of face-to-face interaction with others, excepting of course those you live with. For clarity, ‘others’ in this particular case are those people you would also meet on a frequent or semi-frequent basis, it does not include the ‘internet only’ friends we may also have.

So, as we all get used to communicating with our close ones in an absence of vocal tones, facial expressions and reading of body language, what are your do’s and don’ts to ensure digital messages are effectively delivered but are also received in the manner they were intended, and ‘hopefully’ with minimal risk of misinterpretation, or worse ... causing offence?
