"Why are we suppressing one of the single simplest, cheapest and most effective tactics we have in the war against this pandemic? We should be encouraging Everyone to wear a mask. " Because we don't even have enough of them for the health service, they're useless unless fit tested and used by people with a basic grasp of infection control, they cause bad habits to form if worn for extended periods by untrained users. P3 masks aren't even that cheap... Seriously - keep your distance and wash your hands. It'll go a lot further.

"Why are we suppressing one of the single simplest, cheapest and most effective tactics we have in the war against this pandemic? We should be encouraging Everyone to wear a mask. " You dont need to wear a mask unless you're within 2metres of people. What you really need to win this war is self isolation and lockdown. What the government needs to help is win this is to have locked us down months ago yes months ago atleast late january and to have got underway with testing testing testing. If someone such as me could have seen this pandemic coming from mid january at the latest and began making plans for 12 to 18months of isolation (yes this long) then why couldn't the uk government? So many ridiculed me for walking around with gloves on and taking this very seriously during February especially in Europe when I travelled there and now look at the state of the world. So many here ignored my warnings and advice and I had said to so many we would be in lockdown they didnt believe me here or elsewhere and finally we are. To win this battle we have to use common sense so why or why is it in such short supply amongst the british public? Stay safe! Peace!

So you were one of those that cleared all the shelves with your stock piling then Did you make the same preparations for SARS and Ebola? If not it would be interesting to know how you were able to predict this disease would escalate in a way that they didn’t, all the way back in january ... i would love a go of your crystal ball

"I’m not saying surgical masks. Any mask or face covering can stop the spread of virus. Scarf bandana, Cotton t shirts or homemade etc. Wuhan lockdown started 23rd January and this warning was posted on 29th January. https://youtu.be/Yq3Y9rmlEQE Anyone with half a brain could have predict back in january except WHO. " My response was to _sianmanc who appears to have stockpiled for 18 months in mid january ... thats a hell of a prediction before any global location went into lockdown

" To be fair I was in Italy just before the virus took hold there... and when I flew into Italy. No masks... no checks no nothing. Malta.. still no masks but they were screening all passengers for temperatures and symptoms... return to the UK... nothing and as I'd at that point been below the exclusion zone by a few miles was told no need to self isolate. But didnt see masks on my travels much. 3 people had them on my plane back to the uk and a gent kicked off accusing them of having something to hide.

"Why are we suppressing one of the single simplest, cheapest and most effective tactics we have in the war against this pandemic? We should be encouraging Everyone to wear a mask. Gimp mask?" haha Seriously though, we just need to observe the guidelines laid out by stay at home and only go out when necessary. I'm guessing it applies nationally but in the NHS those working with patients have been tested months ago in relation to the masks required and some of the people just aren't suitable for the acute provision of care that ITU staff need. Their faces don't fit the requirements of the mask to provide sufficient protection to the wearer. And there in lays the nub; unless there is a programme of fitment on these, there is no guarantee of any proper protection. Stay at home is the best way to avoid this.

"It grates me to see Joe blogs in face masks when at work I have to ration them out to people who actually do need them " Plus the ones who wear them in public, and wear gloves just throw them on the floor when getting in cars. Car parks are littered with them.

Car parks are littered with them." It's really so pointless if people are going to just throw them on the ground. I think if the public are going to use coverings, they should be reusable ones, use once to go the shops, get in your car (if you drive), take them off into a zip lock back, sanitise, and then wash them when you get home, so they ready for the next use. Save the disposable ppe for for Front line workers who actually need them and are at constant risk.... The government should just ban the sale of disposable ppe to the general public

"After 31000 deaths finally Government has told the public to wear face coverings as part of its new coronavirus lockdown strategy. Why it took so long to decide that face coverings helps to stop the spread of this virus. " Notice how they said face coverings and not masks? It's very deliberate wording. We already have the ongoing well publicised issue with PPE. Can you imagine the stock levels if the general public started hoarding them like they did with toilet paper?

So if you come in contact the person infected must wear the mask.

"Finally wearing face coverings will be compulsory on public transport in England from 15 June." Do you have shares in a face mask manufacturer? Joking aside, it's the right move. I don't think it should be compulsory in open spaces but I'm staggered London's figures are comparatively low compared to the rest of the country considering the amount of people that use the buses and tube.
