most fundamental aspects

Well firstly I hope things across there are not as chaotic as they’re being reported over here.

The BBC is not state run. However I appreciate it may sound daft that if people don’t pay their licence fee, they could technically (in practice doesn’t happen) be sent to prison.

The BBC is independent and impartial. However during especially the Brexit thing, they were accused of bias by both sides - which is something of an oxymoron. In short, they are about as impartial as you’re going to get and compared to broadcasters in other countries, the British don’t know how lucky they are.

On the BBC there is a feature called Reality Check. They take figures and use independent sources to check claims made - often by Trump to show which are true and which are spurious. Call it “Trump debunk” if you will. There’s also a radio programme you may be able to access called More or Less that fact checks claims.

The BBC was (according to a commentator on a BBC prog) not voted the most trusted news source of last year, it was ITV. They are also bound by the rules on independence and impartiality. So maybe check out their website.

With YouTube whilst I’m sure there are some very dedicated people trying to be impartial, they are not bound by the same rules as either of the above, so cannot be taken as trusted sources.

All the newspapers have their own bias. Depending upon your own politics, you may choose from:

those owned by Rupert Murdoch (though some were dumped by his company) better known for owning Fox News.

There is I newspaper (formerly known as The Independent)

On the left, with a lot of investigative reporting, is The Guardian.

And swinging way back to the right: The Mail and the Express (the former is reputed to be anti Meghan with the latter under a misconception that Dianna is like Elvis or Jesus)

There are also independent fact check sites that are registered charities. Such as full fact

One other suggestion, which is difficult in times like this, is try not to obsess about every new bit of information.

If you can limit yourself to once or twice a day you will be better able to remain balanced.

Live your life within the parameters of the current advice. This is to help you but far more to help those who are vulnerable and the NHS and care staff and delivery and shop and warehouse staff who need to keep the country functioning.

I'd agree with the BBC being your best source of information. It will be accurate and pretty much unbiased.

It fact checks itself constantly and government influence is limited.

Some of the best BBC information is on the radio too. This was particularly interesting:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/technology-52021757

However, remember that predictions are not real. They are based on the best available information so as difficult as it may sound, try not to worry.

Masked and Distant

The problem really is 24 hour news channels.

Either reporting the same things on a 30 minute loop, or reporting speculation and rumour as fact.

I still trust the BBC for all my news though, for all of the reasons stated above. BUT I wish the people typing the strap lines during the daily updates, would listen to what's being said and have someone check it before it is shown. Quite a few times the strap lines contradict what was said until someone adds in the missing "cant" or "dont".

YouTube and Google is also a problem if not approached with balance.

Credible sounding information which is nothing but a very biased message or pure fabrication.

They also then feed you more of what you have seen before rather than alternatives that give you a more rounded view.

I'm following and really impressed by scientists, doctors and medical professionals blogs on youtube. My favourite person i watch his daily updates is 'Dr. John Campbell' who is studying the growth of the virus and gives his watchers practical advice to stay safe

The news is too distorted truth... It's starting to really annoy me

Do be wary. Remember that the the guy who kicked off the Autism scare with vaccinations and has been the cause of thousands of deaths and serious health consequences was a doctor, just a very bad one.

If you can get access to published scientific literature, you can read and digest known evidence. The authors may still have some bias, due to being human but their funding etc sources of potential bias or conflicts of interests would be highlighted. The former Doctor mentioned above, Wakefield, did get his falsified and discredited work published on vaccinations, so nothing is infallible.

The BBC and The Guardian are reasonably good sources, albeit with international editions. The latter often works with US media, such as the New York Times and others, when investigating international stories, but doesn't have a paywall, preventing access.

Interesting TED interview with Bill Gates

https://www.ted.com/talks/bill_gates_how_we_must_respond_to_the_coronavirus_pandemic

I'd recommend to keep listening to More or Less on Radio 4 as it explains the numbers. Look back at anything you missed in the last couple of weeks.

I would suggest doing a little tial and error. You seem like you want to reach beyond the BBC and mainstream.

If you are now with heaps of time on your hands in these circumstances why not set a goal of finding two opposing direct sources of news on any given subject that interests you.

The internet has many, many flaws.. I may be one! ... but it is also a vast store of great information if you trust your instinct, we all know what rings true. Yes there are many sources of deliberately fake information that can lead you astray. You will encounter those, but in doing so may refine your skills of judging on merit.

A principle of good journalism is to verify any fact via three independent sources.

HTH a bit.

All the media just make their own interpretation of what an expert says usually cherry picking the words they like the sound of and then try to sensationise to get viewers and or readers BBC included

Best listen to actual interviews of real experts and draw your own conclusions bearing in mind THERE ARE NO EXPERTS ON COVID19 only experts making informed guesses based on insufficient data

Reasonable conclusion. Better than a guess I think.

You are certainly right that it's better to listen to interviews or try to read actual reports (or at least the abstract) than a journalist's interpretation of it.

its difficult to understand whats the truth and The truth with the media.

To give you an idea of how twisted things can get Msnbc, cnn, ABC and some others have asked not to carry the white house covid-19 live updates.

they are saying they are nothing more than a Donald trump re-election campaign.

yet these media stations are run by democrat supporters who still havnt got over the poorly run Clinton campaign.

yet trumps approval rating in various polls is the highest its ever been so the public see it another way.

I see a lot of American press because of my business interests there and I also keep an eye on what goes on here.

Not so much, because at this time feelings are running high and too much covid-19 tv doesn't do you any good.

always keep in mind experts are experts in fuck all. if there is a law you can break it. a rule you can bend it.

so called experts want you to see things there way and for you to believe them.

always go with your gut. if it feels right to you, it is.

if there is doubt, then there is no doubt, get out and quick.

I can tell you what isn't being reported much on the news.

since the covid-19 outbreak resources have been stretched across the globe.

homeland security has been weakened because the military are aiding with the effort.

the eye isn't on the drug dealers or other crimes which have an impact on a nations peoples.

criminals are flooding large quantities of drugs inland taking advantage of the situation.

that was until last week. the navy, air-force and marines have been in action and without hesitation eliminating any threat to the border.

this has included drug cartels and ammo dumps hit killing a lot of people.

Stealth bombers have been involved pounding targets as many of you have seen them landing here in the UK.

someone got seriously pissed off and they are not interested in arresting people just hitting them with an overwhelming power.

and more is on the way to Venezuela.

none of this is being reported because the world is looking at whats happening at home.

Interesting theory.

Do you define a doctor as a "so called expert"? The people who designed and built the car that you drive I or the bridge that you walk across or the plane that you fly in?

Would you be happy with them "using their gut"?

If not, then there are experts and they may well know more than you, so at least pay attention.

how do i know the bbc are going a good job newswise...

the people on the left think the bbc news is too "right wing"

the people on the right think that bbc news is too "left wing"

in the uk there are laws that talk about impartiality that you don't have in the states....

so actually in the uk both BBC and Sky News do a good job...

thats why i laugh and giggle whenever i watch fox news... how they every claim to be "fair and balanced" is beyond me!

thats why fox news got so many fines when they were broadcasting in the uk over impartiality they in they in the ended decided it wasn't worth it!

if you end up getting more fines than RT (Russia Today) you know you are not in a good place...
