The guy running the country (Boris) bought a water blaster to disperse rioters. They can blow peoples eyes out. Bet he wishes he'd kept it now.

1984 is statistically the most likely book for people to lie about having read...so who's read it then? hahaha

Me. I studied it for my English Lit. I level. That was in 1972, I can hardly remember it

Now I’m curious to see this ad. To be fair, last time I read 1984 was about 10 years ago - my recollection of it may be rusty so I might miss the specific bit you’re referring to.

The erosion of basic individual liberties. Enforced, monitored, controlled behaviour and the handing of wholesale power to the State were key themes of 1984.

So was the prohibition of unapproved sexual encounters.

Slightly relevant on account of the newly approved legislation.

some have to work because SSP won't pay the bills or feed the family. If you're boss won't lay you off you can't claim you're 80% some people have to live in the real world.

Yes, in a milder form. Maybe ONE of the reasons Boris avoided diving into a draconian style of controling the situation. He didn't want that comparison If people don't conform at low level control "The Party" will step it up.

Personally I would have preferred a faster action on this crisis.

There were so many warning signs.

Some obvious, some more deeper.

What I would like to know is what our Intel people were doing and not picking this crisis up sooner. Wouldn't the germ warfare people be looking out for this even if isn't a man made weapon.

Central

We should always be suspicious of the government restricting or removing liberties, especially if they have form for not always reinstating them.

Major crises have people confused, scared, overwhelmed etc, when they have diminished potential to fully understand the comprehensive implications of what is done to them, may actually mean.

In this instance, we have a 6 month review period. It's easy to see how an unscrupulous administration could abuse its citizens trust during a period of extreme crisis, so it is right that citizens are able to criticise and retain sufficient personal sovereignty and freedom.

So I’ve never read the book. I’ve seen that 2020 bit but.

To add to this I’m sure it became a banned book? Now if I’m correct it was banned in 2015? A few months later Bill gates did a talk about war and he also said this would be the happen....

PS im not buying an of this. Just wanted to put it out there

I'm still not sure why they felt the need to have a two year period on the new executive powers? It seems at this time the govt is intent on flexing its muscles a bit?

I think it's actually Jeremy Corbyn who thankfully insisted on the six month review period.

I'm also getting Chitty Chitty Bang Bang vibe, with all the empty streets.

Just waiting for the child catcher to come whizzing by. Baron von Boris has got all the toys.

Yes. Very good book with a serious message. I however think Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is closer to how the population is controlled though.

It just has an eerie feel about it

I find it very ironic someone telling us how to stay safe when they have the virus themselves. He looks like he has a nasty virus too

Exactly they should have used a friendlier face...rather than going for the "demon headmaster" (old bbc show for those old enough to remember) look.
