Trains Running Empty

Intercity trains pass near me, and most are nearly empty.

Local passenger trains have only the driver and guard on board. Should they be running a reduced service?

Save fuel, environment and less risk to workers?

I think the trains switched to a new timetable this week, with generally reduced service levels. There needs to be a minimum level that's sufficient to cope with priority staff and shift variations etc

Yes. I've heard of carriages this week rammed with NHS staff. So essential/ critical... But not enough service for social distancing

that more of a london underground issue.... as far i have heard they have had nowhere near the issues on overground services!

In the Wales valleys essential staff are still using the train. Unfortunately the train company have reduced services and carriages so the trains are standing room only. See walesonline for videos.

Be fair to him he did report that they did not have enough drivers and controllers to run more tube trains safely.The problem has been the numbers of other people still travelling.

Those people have no choice than to travel.

Khan should have done more, suspend the congestion and ULEZ charges plus allocate free parking to companies and encourage firms to hire minibuses to get their staff to work etc.

On a side note, is there any reason why we have never trained army reservists to operate trains in case of an emergency like this?

Half service in Scotland and its widely being advertised for key workers to be able to get in and out of work. Day trippers and pleasure trips are being cracked down on. Railways are essential to keeping the country running as they not only provide key workers a way in but also freight keeps moving across the country. There is a 97% drop in passenger numbers up here which is amazing so it shows people are actually listening to the advice.

He has suspender ULEZ and congestion charging.

How are you going to practice social distancing in a mini bus???????.

And if a site has say 500 operatives on it as some do there is not enough parking for that many cars and you obviously cannot car share.

As to training reservists to drive trains would think that training and testing have to be ongoing.Take something Like 2 years to train a driver and then you have to be trained on specific routes.

I wasn't aware that the charging has been suspended, I will need to check that.

There are actually lots of places in Central London that could be repurposed as temporary car parks, beneath the railway arches for example. I know that a couple of the big nightclubs (Suffolk Street Warehouse and the old SEOne club for example) were previously car parks. And there are lots of NCPs that could be used.

Minibuses would obviously be a last resort; not ideal but much better than the tube.

Thanks for clarifying a little about the train driver thing, I had a feeling it was specialised to each route.
