"Perhaps we are, but we aren't called Great Britain for no reason. We are a great country and will beat this in the long run." Oh, I'm sure we will do in the long run. Just a shame so many people are so keen to ignore the reality and make matters worse in the short term. -Matt

Ok it may be longer than that but thinking logically (which seems a big issue for some on here) IF people abide by the lockdown the number of new cases should drop dramatically. Assuming I've read and understood the infection/isolation periods correctly. And no, things won't work if people have the "why should we comply?" sort of attitude.

"Panic measures..... No guarantee it will improve the situation and no exit strategy....meanwhile we go on destroying the economic life of the country.... Which bit of this are you still trying so hard to fail to understand? -Matt Matt.... Most of it, explain it to me, I am listening..... Michael" OK, lets try slowly. Each person on average infects 3 other people at the moment. That is the current rate. Known as R0. That means that if I go out and about as usual, I infect 3 other people. Those 3 other people infect another 3 people each. That is a total now, of 13 people (1 + 3 + 3*3). Those 9 can go on and infect another 3 people each. ie 27 people. So now we have (1 + 3 + 3*3 + 3*3*3) = 40 people in total... then 121... then 364... then 1093... see... it starts to go up dramatically. After 10 levels above we now have 88,573 people. But what would happen if instead of 3 people infected each level, it was only 2? What if at each level, 1 person stayed at home, or didn't go out? Then after 10 level we'd only have 2,047 total people infected. A massive difference. At the current rate of infection, we are going to massively overload the number of ICU beds, ventilators, staff we have. And that is not just a problem for those that get the disease, but anyone else who needs treatment for anything else at the time too. You have a heart attack? Sorry, tough luck. You die. You involved in a serious car crash and need surgery? Sorry, you die. You have a bad asthma attack? Allergic reaction? You die. There simply will not be the medical facilities available to deal with these situations. So far the government has asked people to "socially distance" and it has not worked. People who don't think that this applies to them and don't understand or care that it affect everyone continued going out. Now the government has had to take the next step up and mandate further lock down. Because some idiots couldn't control themselves. -Matt

" How many people need to die before you think people should stop being knobheads and try to protect the more vulnerable? " That's the point of a pandemic. It does take the vulnerable. It's fighting nature to stop that. Thinking "Oh we have to save granny" is emotional non-scientific selfish thinking. Yeah I get that people care about relatives, I do too, but we should be thinking of the greater good.

You could not make it up... -Matt Who sold all the NHS beds to the private sector? You got rid of all the nurses? You couldn't make it up" Especially when we were already understaffed in that department. Not even including that "flu pandemic" has been on the national risk register since at least 2008 and is down as one of the most disruptive and most likely events to happen. -Matt

" At the current rate of infection, we are going to massively overload the number of ICU beds, ventilators, staff we have. I totally get the maths. I just think that number of deaths doesn't justify this reaction. In the long run pandemics are good for populations." That's cold. Please explain how the economic fallout from this benefits anyone? How many lost man hours will this cost? " How many people need to die before you think people should stop being knobheads and try to protect the more vulnerable? That's the point of a pandemic. It does take the vulnerable. It's fighting nature to stop that. Thinking "Oh we have to save granny" is emotional non-scientific selfish thinking. Yeah I get that people care about relatives, I do too, but we should be thinking of the greater good." Surely taken to the logical conclusion only the strongest in society survive?

I'd feel bad about them going but no worse than them being taken by another cause. I'd also feel selfish for feeling bad when it was for the greater good. "Tomorrow will tell the story. I predict bulk buying all over again. I sincerely hope I'm wrong but I fear I'm not. " Bulk buying will not be allowed. Supermarkets will only allow a certain number of people into the shops at a time. They can restock easier. There will be tape outside the shops and you step forward one see a at a time once someone comes out. This is happening in Spsin etc and the shelves are well stocked

I also think your response is more subjective than objective too. Is a subjective response any better than an objective one? The world carried on for months as they watched the Hutus and Tutsis murder each other without interfering until nearly 3 million had died. Of course it didn't warrant it because it didn't effect us, it had no bearing on the stock exchange so no wealth or economy was being effected other than their own. Wasn't important because they were of different colour, race and were from darkest African corner. It took 1.6 million to be killed and a week before it got the BBC news. 6.7 million buried (population of Ireland N and S). Atrocities to children and women that would make Ur hairs curl. Those who survived watch the west looking in on them like at a cinema. I'm afraid we're all guilty of being cold and seemingly showing lack of compassion. It doesn't mean we don't have it, maybe just a different perspective and that shouldn't be just assumed as wrong. What is needed more than anything is showing compassion towards those who are reacting or responding differently. Their circumstances are different, background is different, life experiences are different. Views are different too. Respect that and be big enough to be compassionate towards everyone.

It does unfortunately. We've all got families we're going to miss. I've got 3 nephews I see 3-4 times a week and it's gonna be fucking horrible. However, nothing is more important to me than my families and friends so if I don't get to see them for 4-6 weeks while this is brought under control then so be it. I just hope to god EVERYONE tows the line here but some people are so fucking stupid and selfish I sadly fear it will take longer than expected to get back to anything near normality. Wo we share custody though. She is meant to be with me mon to Thursday and him the rest of the week. So her staying home.. isnt that simple If you're at home 7 days a week as part of the lockdown then it is that simple. Yes, it's going to be hard but unfortunately parental custody agreements go out the window. I have a lot of sympathy for everyone in this situation but it won't be forever, people need to be sensible, try and explain things the best they can to their kids and ensure that Facetime, Skype, WhatsApp etc are utilised. he has said he will still pick her up and drop her off as he is driving past on his way to work. I dont know how this stands but I'm not going to stop him if he wants to pick her up... technically she could walk from ours to his for exercise across the fields..He lives by himself. So don't know how it will be. " There are going to be many people in your situation. I empathise. "The country has seen worse and has came back from worse. The world has not seen worse let alone Britain." It absolutely has... there are a number of examples from worse times in the world, where there wasn’t the medicine, science and technology to combat these things. Have some faith that the people that have spent years of their lives studying these sorts of things can help. Despite the overwhelming negative issue there are a lot of positives to take out of the humanity of it all. There are good people out there focused on making things better.

Should not need one....hopefully. So much gloom, doom and pessimism about. Maybe Mike, you should get down to your local hospital and tell the NHS staff to 'cheer up' or 'look on the bright side'.....Let me know how that goes for you fella"

" At the current rate of infection, we are going to massively overload the number of ICU beds, ventilators, staff we have. I totally get the maths. I just think that number of deaths doesn't justify this reaction. In the long run pandemics are good for populations. That's cold. Please explain how the economic fallout from this benefits anyone? How many lost man hours will this cost? How much poorer will all be after this is over?" Genetically modified food came about due to an ever increasing overpopulation. It isn't science fiction. So cold - no, you simply cannot be emotive about that fact.

" So you’ve never accepted any western medicine I assume? Vaccines? If you got a cut would you just let yourself die rather than accept antibiotics? I don't have a problem with western medicine. I do think we keep people alive with extraordinary measures when we shouldn't and a time of crisis is not a time to get sentimental and emotional about it. I know my view is unusual, but for me the 'we have to save everyone' is unrealistic and...Well just doesn't make sense. And I find my inability to understand where people's actions are coming from frustrating. It's and interesting point you make. It's interesting how so many who advocate saving every life wouldn't disagree with evolution and the survival of the forest as standard belief too. Evolution explains how life on earth arrived at where it is today It should never be part of a belief system or a way to conduct your life All things evolve but traditional Darwinism has been debunked. I didn't mention Darwinism He struck upon the theory and you might say it evolved from there Evolution does not explain how we got here. In fact the rate of evolution proves that's not how we got here. The evolution of the human brain could not have occurred in the time that it supposedly did." Somthing far more sinister is going on. If people thing we are ever returning to normal from this, then think again. Now we have shown how easy it is to divide us, seperate us, take away our rights (heck they didnt even do that, we just laying down and handing it over) life as we knew it isnt ever coming back.

No. It was always going to come to this. Well, we could have done things differently and come to a different outcome. We could have tested and tracked earlier. We could have taken heed of what was going on in China and in Italy. But if what you mean is "the British population would always have contained idiots that would have fucked it up" then I think I agree with you. Brexit showed that... now people might start to realise. -Matt" It's possible that Britain is governed by the party that historically is white, male, educated and arrogant (think victorian times). They would want their own scientists to guide them not those from other countries. It's a "we know best" cos we're rich and educated. What the populous does is irrelevant. So the govt would have been aware of some non-compliance.

The start of squashing the curve began before today. The govt has gradually been doing it with previous measures. Which is why it was always going to come to this. It has been a calculated strategy with perhaps some measures brought forward a day or two as non-compliance has been outstanding.
