They need to actively consider a bit more bloody quickly

If there's ever a time for naming and shaming, this is it. Not the Fab ban kind. The "report to licensing and permanently boycott" kind. Selfish fuckers will have blood on their hands.

I don't understand the current strategy, is it to keep us in isolation until the virus is eradicated or till a vaccine is available? That would take a lot of testing.

If so we couldn't open our borders till it is eradicated world wide.

Also we were told we needed 'herd immunity' which means a lot of us need to get it

Apologies if the approach is fully documented somewhere, just I haven't seen it

The idea is that we slow the spread. We can't prevent it, but if we all isolate, we slow it down to a point where the health system can cope with increased demand. Rather than having to ration use of ventilators.

Drag it out and "flatten the curve" that way at its peak it wont break our healthcare system and is much more manageable.

I know of a couple of cases where the pubs had prepared and bought extra food for Mother’s Day.

They were closed but still cooked up the food and offered it to the local community at half the price. You had to supply your own plates / containers to take it away in. If interested you were given a set time to arrive and collect with 5 minutes between each collection.

It went down a storm and most in that area were grateful for a decent cooked meal, as struggling to source food.

Better that than good food gone to waste

Agreed, I cant believe how many people there are wandering around town.

Taking away people's basic human rights to roam and removing their civil liberties to come and go is a serious serious step, I personally think it is the wrong decision for many reasons.

I do think that the elderly and vulnerable need protecting and this should be achieved through self imposed isolation and distancing.

I also agree that a minority of inconsiderate people are spoiling it but putting the whole country under house arrest is not the answer and giving the government the power to do so is a scary, Orwellian notion.

What about peoples most basic of human right? The right to live. Allowing people no matter how much of a minority they are to spread a virus that is killing 100s of people amounts to inhumane euthanasia.

Agreed 100%. We will need our democracy and civil rights long after this poxxy virus has been sent on its way.... Handing over such powers to politicians is never a wise idea, they have a habit of forgetting to hand those powers back when the "crisis" has passed....

"

The idea is that we slow the spread. We can't prevent it, but if we all isolate, we slow it down to a point where the health system can cope with increased demand. Rather than having to ration use of ventilators.

So in theory it will go on until there is a vaccine

Well it would anyway, we need to keep the impact to a minimal.

Ah well , we will be like this for 12 months then

Unfortunately theres no quick fix to this, its unpressidented in our time.

True but we should understand the impact and if we cannot work for 12 months we need to be told so we can prepare

Prepare what? The time to prepare has been and gone the virus isnt going to wait for us to get our shit together, now we have to be reactive the time to be proactive has gone."

I disagree there are a lot of preparations, especially financial ones. Unlocking funds, looking to assist your children etc. The government must have done an impact assessment by now, it would be good to know the outcome. I understand it's not a science, but an educated guess would be good

"Can’t come quick enough

Agreed, I cant believe how many people there are wandering around town.

Be careful what you wish for.

Why? And also would you be the first to defend the government for not doing more, if your elderly and vulnerable relatives die because we let people just wonder around?

Taking away people's basic human rights to roam and removing their civil liberties to come and go is a serious serious step, I personally think it is the wrong decision for many reasons.

I do think that the elderly and vulnerable need protecting and this should be achieved through self imposed isolation and distancing.

I also agree that a minority of inconsiderate people are spoiling it but putting the whole country under house arrest is not the answer and giving the government the power to do so is a scary, Orwellian notion.

We tried that but people didn’t follow the rules of social distancing. So the only way is lock down, that might make those that have flouted the rules so far, think a bit more of how they act when it’s partially lifted.

Yes. If people had done what was needed in a global crisis then maybe it wouldn't have come to this.

I'm no fan of politicians, particularly these ones, but infectious diseases don't give a damn about your civil liberties, and human lives come first.

And what would that be close the whole world down?

Essential functions only. The economic consequences will be catastrophic, of course, but so would the alternative death toll. "

Close countries and flights???

You do realise that people are still coming in from all over the world?

Some experts are now saying a 6 week full lockdown may stop this virus. But there's every chance we will get another one next year, so get ready for never working February to may again.

Boris to address the nation.

Either the country is on full lockdown as of this evening or something has happened to the royal family

Neither I was but think it’s likely to be the former

It kind of is though when you take into consideration how many people would die as a result of a deep recession, you only have to look at history to tell you that. Sadly it's a fine balance and there probably isn't an ideal solution. I dont envy our government or their expert advisors right now.

The threat alone of being seen by a patrol car and getting a fine or reported to the courts will dissuade a vast majority of people from flaunting the advise, because they're not criminals and dont want to get into trouble.

How do you get COVID-19 by going for a walk?

Where you are more likely to get infected is making a daily trip to the shops to see if there's toilet paper yet.

Encountering others or touching contaminated surfaces. Btw, the virus survives for hours or days on some surfaces, everything is potentially contaminated.

"The amount of old people walking about is unbelievable! I suppose at the end of the day they’ve had their life so if they catch it at least they have had that! So selfish though that they are still doing it! I was talking to an older lady .. 73 who was working on the tills at Asda.. she told me that they had suggested she takes 12 weeks off but if she did so voluntarily she wouldnt get paid.

Another old couple today basically said that they weren't being prisoners in their own home .... if they got it they got it

Yes and if they got it then they would be putting others at risk! People don’t actually get this at all! That’s the dangerous thing! They are only thinking of themselves! When their sick and need medical attention they are risking the nurses, carers , doctor etc etc! It just doesn’t stop! Just because they wanna go for a walk!

How do you get COVID-19 by going for a walk?

Where you are more likely to get infected is making a daily trip to the shops to see if there's toilet paper yet."

It wasnt just going for a walk. There is a national trust place on Cheshire which had to stop people coming in..it was that busy

People were going to beaches..beauty sites etc

It wasnt just the beach..loads of tourist places were swamped.

"Uk is two weeks behind Italy. Do we really want the equivalent death toll, because some people wanted a stroll on a beach and a 99. How incredible small minded and selfish of people. The lockdown is about stopping the spread of the virus and protecting people’s lives. to be fair people were told they could go and enjoy the outdoors. "

Whilst still practising social distancing. Did you see footage of the tubes, markets etc on the news earlier? It was really busy!!!

The crowds on the tube are not the passengers fault, the transport system in London has been mismanaged badly by Sadiq Khan and TFL from day one.

Also it is doctors advice that people shouldn't stay indoors full time if they are not displaying symptoms. Fresh air and exercise are actual recommendations.

No. But I got plenty when I went for a jogging a few laps round the park yesterday, which is the kind of freedom I feel should not be taken away as a knee jerk reaction to public hysteria.

If people isolating fit a few weeks is going to save 100s of lives..I think that is a price worth paying.

The person I know on crowded transport this morning is an NHS worker. And most of the crowd were other NHS workers.

But they have no realistic option than to use public transport thanks to the short sighted and incompetent policies in place.

Agreed, the concern that I have is the worse case scenario of a total restriction of movement which could have more detrimental effects than the virus itself.

A managed and thought out, defined period of limited interaction could prove effective in the short term although isolation will probably not provide mid to long term solution.
