Should they be insisting people use their loyalty cards to track spending.

Then if someone has bought way more than they possibly need they could stop the transaction at the till?

Just asking as about to brave the supermarket shortly

They ration people's purchases but not how many times they can go into a shop, people are going in loads of times and getting more that way.

"Not everyone has a loyalty card."

And why not say, "to shop here you have to have one". Its not as if they cost anything.

I'd be surprised, money for nothing. Last year managed to do Christmas food shopping from loyalty points.

So they could track how many visits as well. It's ok saying only 2 of this 2 if that. But after 4 visits the same day.......

I suppose you don't really know if everything they're buying is just for them though, they could be helping out relatives and neighbours who can't get out themselves.

I do the same, the points mount up when you add in fuel purchases etc.

People have to wake up and smell the coffee, it’s fucking selfish to panic buy. If the message can be rammed home to these mindless idiots then hopefully empty shelves will be a thing of the past, virus or no virus.

If it doesn’t happen then I can see some sort of forced rationing.

True, but something needs to be done. No matter what governments say, or how many crying nurse videos, OAP and empty shelf memes are out there, dicks will be dicks and stick pile, multi buy etc.

Just thinking of possible ways to limit it.

Should I have been out queueing at 7am for a 10am opening? I'm dreading going round to try and get basics.

We laughed the first few times at the stupidity of empty shelves, but now it's getting slightly worrying.

The panic buying is a temporary feature, I don't think it will last. Its understandable to see very high demand for some products like soap and hand sanitiser, but the demand for toilet paper is unwarranted. At this stage its a supply chain issue and that will take time.

What I would be more concerned with is that the supermarkets are the only place left where people meet. They have to be an infection hot spot. The supermarkets should really look at reducing the numbers allowed in stores at any time and introduce one way systems, IE in one door and out another.

I don't have a loyalty card as I don't like the supermarket analysing my buying habits. Moot point at this time. I don't think the work involved in Lidl introducing a card scheme would be good use of resources either.

This is my worry.

Although my dad is mostly shopping online for him, my mum and gran, we are getting fresh bits for them.

We are being careful, but there are many vulnerable people, who are having to do their own shopping in the supermarkets.

Survived my trip to Tesco-mageddon.

No toilet roll, no pasta, only expensive handwash (3 on the shelf, I could have bought all 3 but only bought 1)

Little bread.

But lots of other stuff, someone tell the muppets they may have to eat different things, they wont starve.

According to checkout guy they were queueing at 8:30 for opening at 10!!!

Remove all the big shopping trolleys and go back to using a hand basket, this will limit what can be paid for to a minimum.

nooo I've been shopping for numerous other people this week. Only went for myself on Friday... I'm shopping for a nhs member whose hours mean she can not go herself as the shops are empty. As well as for someone in isolation.. and a few elderly people.... so it would look like I was... but I'm not

you're a star. But not everyone is as community spirited as you. Something needs to be done to restrict the idiots hoarding.

1 billion pounds of extra produce in homes compared to last week!!!!

But if restrictions were put in at places that do have loyalty cards then at least there would one place people could shop normally. And not have to queue for 2 hours before the doors open.

There is one solution

Your payment card could be used like an access card.

When your card is registered it would be say as a single, family, carer etc and if you went in more than once in a set time frame you would be denied.

The tech is out there and the tills could easily be linked as they are already online.
