Should tourism be stopped currently?

Serendipity

Was reading that the beaches in Brighton and Cornwall were really busy yesterday. Lots of motor homes have turned up in the Scottish Highlands. Caravan parks and second homes all filling up in tourist destinations. Local people in those areas couldn’t believe that their small shops stripped of food by the new arrivals and saying their scarce NHS resources not designed to cope.

Should the Government be doing more about this?

Speaking from the Highlands, 100% yes. We basically have 1 hospital for an area the size of Wales, and we have a huge elderly population. We aren't going to be able to cope with what's coming, there won't be enough Intensive Care beds for the population that live here let alone all the people that are flooding here. And they're behaving like locusts in our shops!

Costa Blanca Spain...

You wouldn't need to ban tourism if Britain followed Italy, Spain, and France (among others) and went into full lock down. Tourism would just end by default.

We had five days of total lock down in Spain before we managed to get back to Germany and are now in self imposed isolation. From tomorrow the whole of Germany goes total.

It's draconian and bloody horrible, but it is the only way.

Stay at home and stay safe folks.

It's the only way.

Complete lockdown because people refuse to listen to the advice.

The few again ruin it for the masses

Not practical, for several reasons: no need to elaborate....

I live in one of those tourist hot spots, it's heaving here now. North Wales only has 2 hospitals but half of the north west of England had descended on us, it's going to be a disaster if something isn't done soon.

It's a no brainer, stay at home it's the only option. Why leave your home for looters, and put a strain on others food, emergency services and hospitals.

People are fools to assume that this is a picnic period to enjoy.

Just because you are healthy doesn't mean you won't catch the virus . New studies found that even healthy adults can acquire the infection if they don't look after themselves .

I live in a small village near the Lake District which is popular walking spot. Absolutely rammed full with walkers and tourists over the weekend. Yes it’s a lovely place on the coast with good walks. Pubs and cafes shut and our small co-op store already short on food on the shelves yet the tourists, caravanners and motor homers still buy what they can leaving even less for the folk that live there... not to mention the fact that stay at home means exactly that.

Local action is taking place to tape off parking areas and basically, tell to tourists fuck off

And too soft so people won't listen as they value their freedom. What people got to remember critical medical issues that are non coronavirus related won't be seen to. So more lives be lost. Already my friend told me his friends son couldn't get seen to after falling off a horse with critical injuries because the hospital was too full... Wish people see the bigger picture and think its not just about them

And crash local health services and shops in the process... Well done uk for working as a community. I have friends around the world, everyone scared to leave their houses. But uk just keeps having a jolly. Only yesterday, record queues for mount snowdon

Yws, absoloutely. It's going to need total lockdown to stop the imbeciles who went to places like Whitby, Scarborough, Skegness and Hawes over the weekend. People are absoloutely ignorant pig headed fools.

Key workers don't have a choice.

You imbeciles do. Just bloody stop at home.

Time to bring lockdown and get the army to patrol.

"To be blunt, a good chunk of the general population are Stupid, ignorant or selfish.

I worked that out in June 2016 and recent events have only confirmed that.

Unfortunately, a large proportion of the population are "all of the above".

Yes. The massively irresistible move by the National Trust was disgustingly ignorant of the issues concerning the spread of this virus. It was most likely a move to make quick money by selling off a lot of their stagnant trinkets and bring in a last minute thrust if revenue.

I couldn't believe it when I heard they were encouraging mass get togethers at their venues.

They knew exactly what they were doing and was shameful.

I see now they made millions and got a backlash on social media for it, they are closing their venues.

Typical capitalism.

Absoloutely loads and loads of people travelled to our area over the weekend. Our nearerst hospital for us is 17 miles away, for my sister it's 26 miles. We dont have ambulances to cover just our area.

For most of the time farmers and the countryside are slated, yet suddenly people all want to be here. We don't want you at this point in time. Stay away.

Hardly capitalism....last time I checked the National Trust was a charity...

Clacton on sea, Essex

Our doctors surgeries all shut down in Clacton and we have limited walk in appointments so fuck knows where the doctors have gone...probably the seaside too.

Seriously though we are a busy little seaside resort but limited in food supplies due to out of towners looting our shops lol.

Very sad to disappoint you. The resources to police it do not exist...

We do not have an army the size of that in China. Our meagre armed forces will be used more productively than mere trying to corale people who are already cooperating fully.

"LOCK DOWN ALL CITIES IMMEDIATELY

Britain has acted totally irresponsibly in not shutting all airports and you can see why other countries are looking in bewilderment when we then tell people not to go out if possible.

Towns should be on lock down to try and ease the spread of the virus but yet again this government side step the major ptoblems, it's OK telling people to act responsibly but the gates are still open and the horses have definitely bolted.

According to our local Welsh assembly member there was some disturbance at the camping site by us last night resulting in the arrest of some locals who had tried to take the law into their own hands. I'm not totally sure what happened but last night when we shut the curtains it was full, this morning it looks like zero occupancy

This.

Things are very quickly hitting breaking point. Government needs to take very fast decisive action or there will be general panic with people taking matters into their own hands.

Boris wanted to be leader. Now he must do the hard thing and BE a leader.

I agree. In general I've been pleased with some of what they've done, they've acted in a much more socialist way than I'd expect from a conservative government, but they need to stop relying on people to do as they ask and just make it law because there are always some who think they don't have to do what's been advised.
