I never thought I'd say this... but...

Can we just make Sunak PM?

That was a very good speech both in content and delivery. No bluff and bluster of Johnson.

Indeed... both in terms of the actual measures, but also the delivery, it was very reassuring. Very much needed right now.

I've seen so many people across online networks criticising the government's handling of this and asking Tory voters if they're happy now... well I didn't vote at all but I can certainly say that I'm happy with our nations choice.

P.s never voted conservative but refused to vote for that other prick.

Regardless of the cost this is the right thing to do.

I know the 80% will not be enough for some high earners but it's better than expected.

Also I would like to see the national lottery close terminals and for the time being online only.

This is to prevent people going out to buy tickets and possibly spread the virus.

Also the jackpot fixed to £10k but pay that out on all lines of 3 numbers or more so the majority of the public whether they are working or not have a greater chance of winning something good plus it would bring a feel good factor in this difficult worrying time.

There is already 2 staff members off in isolation.

Wont cost the government squat. They can just print money (quantative easing or essentially add extra zeros to the amount in B of E computers) then give some of that out via tax office 'refunds' direct to the individuals..ie..us.

Yes it will devalue the currency to the dollar etc...but they're all considering a similar move.

Could be a good field test for universal basic income (money you get whether you work or not, interesting concept)

Lessons have been learned from history the effects of printing extra money I can see that happening, ultimately the tax payer will foot the bill.

I've been self isolating since Tuesday, I was supposed to be on annual leave next week but work offered to shift my holiday so that I wouldn't have to rely on ssp, and its saved me from losing around £400 in bonuses as if I take 1 sick day I lose my bonuses for the whole month.

There are other things in place for self employed, my friend phoned me earlier and was waffling on about it because his daughter is self employed, I'll be honest I wasn't really listening to him though (rude) problem is non of it's really been made clear, if I was self employed I'd be contacting citizens advice.

“ If your employer cannot cover staff costs due to COVID-19, they may be able to access support to continue paying part of your wage, to avoid redundancies.

If your employer intends to access the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, they will discuss with you becoming classified as a furloughed worker. This would mean that you are kept on your employer’s payroll, rather than being laid off.

To qualify for this scheme, you should not undertake work for them while you are furloughed. This will allow your employer to claim a grant of up to 80% of your wage for all employment costs, up to a cap of £2,500 per month.”

Is there any need to call people delusional? The comment you quoted said nothing about the medical or scientific response to the pandemic, they were praising (as was i) the governments actions to protect its citizens financial futures, which in turn will also benefit the future health and wellbeing of the nation, imagine the NHS being overwhelmed in 18 months time with mental health patients because the government didn't stand by us, or what the suicide rate would be had they not taken these measures.

From a medical point of view I strongly feel that the government was slow to react in taking steps to prevent the outbreak given what we've seen in other countries, but what they are doing now is better, it's just a shame they're having to play catch up.

I think it will come, they seem to be chipping away at dealing with every demographic on an individual basis. Yesterday full time contracted workers didn't have a clue what would happen, and today we do, same as when they announced mortgage breaks for homeowners but said nothing about rental tenants but now theres a plan in place. Hang in there and try not to worry too much I'm sure there'll be plans being made as we speak.

Then, whilst other countries a week or two ahead of us in this disaster went into lock down, we did nothing. Then the schools were asked to close and finally lockdown...

Today's financial announcement was just to keep people in jobs and protect the economy as much as possible.

To say that they couldn't have done more is delusional!

OK, what do you think they should have done, since corona first hit the UK?"

The rest of the world had a golden opportunity to learn from China. First seeing how it shouldn't be done and then seeing how it should be done.

We then went ahead and repeated their initial mistakes instead of learning from them.

Germany has learned from the Chinese and shut their borders quickly. Testing is widespread and quick, meaning that people get removed from circulation before they spread the virus compared to certain countries which don't even have the test widely available. As a result Germany has a relatively low infection rate at this stage.

What could we have done?

1) Screen people coming into the country and introduce a travel ban from every country with known infections. We are an island. Technically a country already isolated.

2) Start lockdown from the moment the first case was detected. Closed schools shut down non essential services. Skeleton crews that have non ovelapping shifts.

3) Pass laws on profiteering and superstores force restriction on all items, not just medicine.

4) Prepared the NHS. Tests kits. Ventilators, getting nurses and doctors in early, training and getting volunteers. Having adequate PPE.

5) Formulating the announcements that were announced today would have reduced a lot of stress on people suffering high anxiety if they had come to us sooner.

6) Right from the start we should have been testing testing testing. We should still, now more than ever, be testing.

"Really impressed with what the government have done for workers.

Just need some clarification for people on zero hour contracts on what help is available for them.

Hang in there and try not to worry too much I'm sure there'll be plans being made as we speak."

.

Exactly. The government are working their way through it. Thankfully we arent on zero hours.

As someone who works for himself through an agency I’m not holding my breath I’ll get any help at all. IR35 being put off by a year has helped but if I don’t work I don’t get paid. And I can’t see the government paying me 80% of my average wages over the last 12 weeks for every week I can’t work

I do however think it’s a great idea to help all the people who are employed PAYE.

I even went for a meal with my kids tonight as they announced everywhere had to shut. The people in the restaurant are wonderful and deserve to be helped until this is all over. And that goes for everyone in hospitality as they often work long unsociable hours for little pay.

We have our own business so have major concerns too. Trying very hard not to worry as it won't help.

"Rishi and the rest of our government for doing as promised and standing by the workers.

I never thought I'd say this... but...

Can we just make Sunak PM?

That was a very good speech both in content and delivery. No bluff and bluster of Johnson.

-Matt

That’s the genius of Boris and his leadership - he identifies the very best people who can get the job done

Like Grayling? Or Truss?

No, sorry, one swallow doesn't make a spring... but Sunak seems to be breaking that trend.

-Matt"

Add Patel, Raab, Rees-Mogg to Truss and Grayling.

But, number 6 WAS possible from the outset and STILL isn’t being done. Not even for teachers - my sister is in isolation with her husband and 2 young children as she has a temperature. You mean test test test with the tests that they still dont know how accurate they are? And that are in short supply since they're a new development and aren't as mass produced as people would like? Let's just test everyone who's sat next to the radiator for too long and when we've run out sod the ones that need them the most

It's all about using available resources as wisely as possible, dont forget that this is a new virus so there isnt a tried and tested method for any country, and every country has a different demographic so there wont be a one method fits all kind of fix for this.

Several countries have done it. People shouldn't have to be dying in your own country when you have evidence of what it can do in countries like Italy, China and Iran.

Yes there would have been criticism. But letting people die unnecessarily just to avoid criticism might be good politics but it doesn't show compassion.

Everything they have eventually done could have been done sooner.

Those tests were what have been a big help in countries like Germany and China. The fact that we are getting them now, long after the the horse has bolted is evidence of that.

Of course the government is going to push back with that argument. It's the only one they have as an excuse.

Eventually. Long after the signs from China that they would be necessary.

It's good and positive that we are eventually embarking on the correct course of action. It's just a pity we didn't learn from the mistakes other countries made.
