"I would rather have one, than be without one government said a few weeks ago they did not work then they said - stop buying them so they can be free'd up for doctors/nurses & medical practises so? if they dont work, why are they needed so badly" This is a piss take, right?

" government said a few weeks ago they did not work then they said - stop buying them so they can be free'd up for doctors/nurses & medical practises so? if they dont work, why are they needed so badly" Because they have to be used in a specific manner to avoid you contaminating yourself and they need to be changed after a very specific periods of time. There are very specific protocols as to their use, also medical staff use them when they are tending to people with the virus. Just wearing them while you walk down to the shops won't really help prevent anything other than waste valuable masks.

They don't have the option to social distance. They will not only protect the seriously ill but frontline staff too

"Imagine a standard dust mask as a piece of chicken wire. Then imagine the virus as a grain of sand being thrown at that chicken wire. Lots saying that it will “catch” the droplets. "I am not an expert like a few people on here? But If face masks stop 1 in a 100 they would be worth it , that 1 may well be your mum.or dad or gran " That's the key though using them were they are most effective. No point wearing one in your car, at a place of work or out walking the dog. But for short transit situations with lots of people then wearing and removing and washing hands correctly when at your destination will help.

"Everyone says they don’t protect so why are so many people wearing them? " Stops the person wearing it from passing to another. Close proximity, special protocol for those in medical roles. They are then binned after a certain time. For ordinary use by others not involved in this protocol there's no point.

"If you wear a mask out and about it does nothing good. Health care professionals wear them in conjunction with gloves suits and eye protection. There is a specific way to put it on and take it off to dispose of it and the are only worn for very short periods while treating a single patient. Ive seen people wearing gloves for hours at a time. This does nothing and transmits infection in the same way as if you had bare hands. " spot on. seen a woman wearing rubber gloves wiping her itchy nose then handling fruits... similarly with masks - unless it is FFP3 (rather than a B&Q dust mask), might as well wrap some fishnet stockings over your head.

Masks used in low risk, general surgery ARE the "off the shelf" type, but for stringent control or high risk stuff (like this), then fully fitted, person masks will be used.

And because it's no use wearing mask if you still don't wash your hands properly and go touching contaminated surfaces then touching your nose, eyes, mouth. Same reason gloves being worn constantly don't work.

"I have never read so much shit until reading on this thread, all the ones who say *If the mask dont fit properly *the mask has to fit your face *the mask has to be fitted to your face BULLSHIT the only thing that gets properly fitted to your face are B.A. set face masks and this is mainly for guys with beards, that is also why most B.A. sets are positive pressure so that when we go into a gas filled environment such as when there is a gas escape offshore the positive pressure inside the mask finds any "un-air tight gaps and blows air out preventing gas from getting in, but normally the mask is air tight. Do not get these mixed up with the masks doctors and surgeons wear in hospital as totally different and the ones doctors and surgeons wear are not individual masks made specific to fit one face" Your wrong! We had face masks sized and tested for a seal for Ebola a few years ago. I remember being sprayed with a sugary mist to see if I could taste it! If I couldn’t we had a seal and the mask was fitted correctly! Never actually used it for purpose though which is a good thing!

"I bought a dozen FFP3 masks over a month ago when the government was saying they are a waste of time. I am on the high risk group but also I'm a carer so sadly I cant stay in for 12 weeks as I'm looking after myself and someone else. These masks have with googles and latex gloves been a godsend. I rotate 3 masks a day and each one goes in a bag as soon as it comes off. When I get home I spray each mask with isopropyl which materialises them...in doing so these will last me for ages. So yeah I'm glad I bought them as they are my defense against this virus. " If you don't mind me asking. After you have sprayed them with isopropyl (I have 90% surgical spirit) how do you dry then store them? Thanks.

"A friend is a doctor on the frontline and should change his mask after ever patient but has to use the same mask all day due to shortages. The NHS werent promoting the public wearing masks at first due to wanting them for the NHS. An Italian study has said that the virus can be transmitted on the air in excess of 10 metres in some conditions. My doctor friend has told me I MUST wear a mask whilst out and i value his opinion. I must admit I wasnt as bothered about wearing a mask before speaking to him but to each his own." He should be changing mask to reduce the risk of transfering TO patients, If he is undertaking Aerosol generated procedures (e.g. Intubation or tracheotomies) then he should wear an FFP3 Mask, which are in shorter supply for his protection covered by a surgical mask he should change in between for patient protection. You only need to wear a mask if you come into a contact (2 Metres) from a confirmed/suspected person, though would be rendered ineffective (and actually a further risk to yourself) after touching the mask, contaminating the mask or removing the mask (including putting on your neck or covering with a scarf/clothing or anything else) That being said guidance is continually changing and there are niche (or at least conflicting) scenarios where you may benefit from doing the "wrong" thing.... TL:DR - Masks are good if you are using them in the correct procedure and changing them frequently (e.g. healthcare settings), but walking around with them on the street is generally worse - though admitedly it is probably better to wear a contaminated mask than nothing if someone was to cough in your face.

"A face mask won't stop you catching the virus it.ll help people with it from spreading it . Washing your hands as often as possible will help as most pick it up of surfaces. Just keep your distance and stay safe everyone. X" Its probably one of the highest rates of infection ( living on surfaces) will only be airborne for minutes, but can live and transmit on surfaces for up to 36 hrs. "I thought a face mask would help to prevent spreading the virus if the wearer coughs or sneazes? Yes but it works both ways and also helps protect the wearer if someone else coughs or sneezes" The face masks people wear on the street are useless: the virus is small enough to get through. So, you're walking around all day, adjusting a virus infected face mask, touching your face and eyes, go home and plonk the virus laden mask onto a surface transferring it into your home. Mask give people a false sense of security in lieu of nothing else.

"Everyone says they don’t protect so why are so many people wearing them? " They do protect.. Covid 19 is airborne. Coughing.. Sneezing even speaking produces droplets in the air.. Anybody wearing a N95 respirator will have a barrier between these droplets hence less chance of catching covid 19.. This false rumour that face masks don't work was spread by the WHO would you believe because they want to ensure frontline health care workers have as much ppe as possible.. If they said face masks work everybody would scramble out to buy them up leaving a shortage.. They do work.. Buy 1

"I suspect this week you will see a lot more people wearing them. " Certainly, but then to be fair we shouldn’t really be seeing too many people out and about, we’re all supposed to be staying inside This is now the real threat to the lockdown - “oh it’s ok I can go out I have mask”

People will venture out thinking they're safe. In the states they're telling people to wear bandanas etc when out. This will drag on because the politicians and doctors can't get their act together.

"I would rather have one, than be without one government said a few weeks ago they did not work then they said - stop buying them so they can be free'd up for doctors/nurses & medical practises so? if they dont work, why are they needed so badly" Medical masks are meant to protect patients, not the hospital staff who wear them. If you're sick from COVID-19 then the last thing you need is a unknowingly sick doctor spreading another illness to you. They can be worn if you're infected and at home to help prevent the spread to the people who live with you, but otherwise the public shouldn't really be buying them. Basically if you want protection, stay at home. Or just wear a full hazard suit when going shopping.

"It does make me wonder why some people are driving around in the car on their own wearing a mask " Simple If you put a mask on to go into one shop then take it off to get in your car then throw it away or bag it for washing If your going to another shop then it's better to keep wearing it while driving there Stay home stay safe

"That is right, they dont work. I am not sure why they have it on." If you have the virus it will help prevent spreading it. Also if someone coughs that has it those small particles can stay airborne upto 3 hours, walk through that area without a mask and there is a risk, less likely if your mouth and nose is covered.

"A mask will provide some protection if used correctly. The gov fuxked up, They did not have enough.. And what they had they need for NHS. So they play down the usefulness And WE ALL BELIVE THEM... ....... Ww watch the news and point at the tv when every other country in the world shows people wearing them. And we go, wow, why are they wearing masks!!!!!!!!! " And the advice from WHO at the time was they offer no protection. So which advice should they have taken?

" government said a few weeks ago they did not work then they said - stop buying them so they can be free'd up for doctors/nurses & medical practises so? if they dont work, why are they needed so badly Because they have to be used in a specific manner to avoid you contaminating yourself and they need to be changed after a very specific periods of time. There are very specific protocols as to their use, also medical staff use them when they are tending to people with the virus. Just wearing them while you walk down to the shops won't really help prevent anything other than waste valuable masks."

"South Korea has made it compulsory to wear them while out. They have said while it doesnt stop it.. that it does help with lowering transmission and they are doing well with it there " Totally agree and this should be part of any exit plan here...
