How will parents cope with their kids at home.....?

From school? I read somewhere of a parent who said that how would we would cope with them at home. I found it quite fun lol.

I have 2 special needs sons and they're going to struggle being out of routine. 4 weeks with easter hols and I cant work either which means no money.. I'm going to go mad and they will regress... csnt even take them swimming, cinema, bowling etc...

I'm in the fortunate position of being able to work from home. Personally I'm looking forward to spending more time with our kids, I hardly ever get any quality time with them so see it as a nice opportunity to just all be together x

Mine aren't little ones they are 12 and 15. I can stop work to have conversations, teach them things about my job and how to deal with different situations which crop up etc. They love to cook so Im around to help when need and at lunch we all get out and about for an hour or so rather than it being 6pm I'm just coming home and am too shattered to engage with them much

Mines 2.75 and is going to be a handful when we have to stay inside. At the moment while we are OK to go out we are spending alot of time at the beach, in the woods and on the moors.. But I'm not looking forward to total lock down...

Its a shame as he doesn't understand why he can't see everyone or go to soft play.. He's missing his family but need to keep the more vulnerable in the family safe x

We already home educate our kids so very little changes for us.

Only difference for us is that A is working from home entirely now where in the past he would only do so when he was feeling sick or for early morning calls.

I love having my kids at home, they have been off a week and I do their education during the day and catch up on admin work at night.

I normally do this during the school holidays, so it's nothing new and I wont be crying in a corner in another week.

This is a shame. If I wasn't working FT from home to educate my own students, I'd be offering to assist. Between us we have experience teaching a good number of subjects to A level and beyond. People feel free to message us about home education.

Kids generally go to school. This has been the norm for centuries. Thus parents have accepted paid work etc around their kids schooling. This has abruptly stopped but parents haven't been able to stop working. We pre plan for things like the half terms but obviously that isn't do able at present.

Aww thanks. We're trying to continue to work from home (for the same organisation), allow a 17yo to complete his BTEC qual in music from his room and have our 3yo at home. We have to continue to pay for the preschool place when she's off if we'd like a place for her when this all dies down.

We work in education, we're trying to continue to deliver live lessons and advice online. We can't just stop working because we won't get paid. I'm just hoping that the nursery staff get paid because I imagine many parents will lose income, will stop paying for the service they aren't using and the nursery will go bust. There are a lot of staff there who would be up shit creek.

Also, because of childcare some employers will only pay for a short length of time, then you’re on your own until school starts again. If that’s Sept_mber it’s a long time to survive on a reduced income. Plus usually children can get out and about, they can’t do that in this situation. Imagine those cooped up in flats with no easily accessible outside space.

He has also lost his weekend job in hospitality. But we bred him, as you put it so nicely, so we'll keep him.

My youngest daughter is doing distance learning so with her class but online/virtual classrooms.

My son finishes tomorrow at 3.

He'll do 10am - 1pm school work, week days and then learning through play or more engaging activities for an hour or so in the afternoon

It's a good job some of us have kids. Who else would be doing the minimum wage jobs that are keeping the country moving at the moment? It's lovely that you don't have kids, congratulations, but let's be realistic. Schools have been in operation in this country, nay the world, for centuries. You attended on once upon a time. No one envisaged a time when they'd all be shut overnight. Even in WW2, the schools stayed open. This is unprecedented, and frankly pointless comments about breeding are singularly unhelpful at best. Insulting at worst. It might be my child wiping your arse in a care home one day, just rem_mber that.

There are parents with infinite time with their kids who do not spend "quality" time. They let their kids watch TV etc and never interact. Conversely there are parents who work long hours but who spend every available spare moment doing positive and engaging things with their children. It's nothing to do with how much time. I actually love spending time with my boys, I feel guilty that I don't usually get the opportunity to as I'm sure a lot of parents do. So now yes quality time is what I can give them, as much as they want.

I just hope people understand that teachers are NOT on indefinite paid holiday. The numbers of kids going into school will still be quite high and staff will be preparing work for online "learning"

Be nice if they were given the opportunity to catch up in the ridiculous amount af stuff that the government expects them to do in addition to teaching a class...

I believe the question was how will people cope and didn't ask for any bitchy comments about those with children.

Just found out my daughter is allowed to go into school because her dad is classed as one of the vital workers at this time. Even so she will also get dinner vouchers because he is on a low income.

Vital often equals low income because we live in a partially capitalist society that prizes money and superficial things over people and their personal welfare and so only class people who make profit as important enough to 'earn' a decent wage.

Everyone has a right to a family. But not everyone has a right to support that family because of the above.

Aww thanks. We're trying to continue to work from home (for the same organisation), allow a 17yo to complete his BTEC qual in music from his room and have our 3yo at home. We have to continue to pay for the preschool place when she's off if we'd like a place for her when this all dies down.

We work in education, we're trying to continue to deliver live lessons and advice online. We can't just stop working because we won't get paid. I'm just hoping that the nursery staff get paid because I imagine many parents will lose income, will stop paying for the service they aren't using and the nursery will go bust. There are a lot of staff there who would be up shit creek.

We're all in the same boat, we're not sure we even have jobs next week.

We haven't got jobs if our company goes bust and we work for the same place so it's both of us straight out. Thus we have to deliver, keep the students educated and the fees coming in. We will have to be doing that with the 3yo making a racket and the 17yo recording music, playing guitar and drums that he'd normally do in the college studios or in a hired studio at the weekend. He has also lost his weekend job in hospitality. But we bred him, as you put it so nicely, so we'll keep him.

Sorry to be so blunt, but they're your children so you need to sort that out, as I said we're all in the same boat, but for us it's minus the kids as we've chosen not to have any.

Actually, since you don't have children you're not in the same boat, not even close. It wouldn't hurt you to have abit of empathy for people who are stuck in a worse situation than you.

We do have children and we totally agree. Fed up of people complaining about looking after their own children. They are your responsibility whether in school or not, if you don't like looking after children, don't keep having them.

They aren't complaining about looking after their children, they are worried about money and being able to feed their kids if they lose their jobs or can't work.

And to those leaving snarky comments, I don’t even see folk on this thread genuinely complaining about their kids - i took it as a light hearted tongue in cheek thread and i think the parents responses have been tongue in cheek.

Mine aren't little ones they are 12 and 15. I can stop work to have conversations, teach them things about my job and how to deal with different situations which crop up etc. They love to cook so Im around to help when need and at lunch we all get out and about for an hour or so rather than it being 6pm I'm just coming home and am too shattered to engage with them much "

I think a lot kids will benefit from this because they have an opportunity to learn some life skills that have somewhat fallen by the wayside over the years, but that depends on their family support network, obviously some will just end up needing more xbox games

Our School have been great. I’ve been given shedloads of work for both my kids to do and both of them have an online classroom that they have to log into (daily i think but not sure yet) and complete tasks set by their class teacher, they/we have to submit the work and the teacher will go over it/comment on it.

The fast turnaround of all this has been impressive and i imagine very stressful for the teachers and admin support.

Fortunately both my children are now old enough to have their own independent lives and I'm so grateful to my one daughter who has taken responsibility for looking after me. I was forced into retirement through ill health a while ago. So am hopefully not going to affected financially either but I'd always been self employed previously so my sympathies to those hit by the double whammy.

Let's be more sympathetic eh folks?

Our School have been great. I’ve been given shedloads of work for both my kids to do and both of them have an online classroom that they have to log into (daily i think but not sure yet) and complete tasks set by their class teacher, they/we have to submit the work and the teacher will go over it/comment on it.

My daughter lives 80 miles away I've arranged with her mother that I will help where I can with schoolwork over video call and that if I get layed off I'll go and stay with them for a few days a week to help.

Your parents didn't look after you 24/7 for months on end because you went to school too. Add in the total lack of anything to do outside the home and the isolation from friends, extended family and other social norms and you have a recipe for very unhappy families. Nice to see some people giving two hoots about families who will struggle.

Mine are amazing and I'm looking forward to it. They aren't difficult. They may even teach me a thing or two.

I've got to take on a new role. Tomorrow I'm going to try to carry on from where their teacher left off. I don't expect to be able to command the attention that a professional teacher would be able to get, but I'm going to give it a go. I should be working too. I'm self employed, but I'm going to semi-shelve that for the time being.

My boy has autism and is still going to school 3 days a week as he's classed as vulnerable.
