One for the ladies x

I have to have it taken out but they can’t seem to find it!

I’ve been to the GP who referred me for an ultrasound and they couldn’t find it either. I don’t think it’s come out because I haven’t had a proper period since it’s been in.

They now want me to have an abdominal x-ray but they did say it might be embedded in my womb lining so I just wondered if anyone else had been through this! A x

I had to be referred to gyne. I opted for the locks private hospital. I went in. They used what looked like a tiny toilet brush, put it inside my uterus and wiggled it around and pulled.

It was very painful. So take some painkillers before x

Mine has to be done in day surgery because apparently I have odd anatomy! I also need to have local anaesthetic injections for them to be able to fit it.

I’ve had bad experiences with my coils from the first one. They cut the strings too short on my first, so I ended up having to have it surgically removed under local, which was an experience I NEVER want to repeat! I was in agony for days because the local only covered the cervix so I could feel her digging around in my uterus trying to find it to remove it. My 3rd I had to have removed after 2 years and reinserted 4 months ago because they didn’t insert that one properly so it was sat at the top of the cervix, therefore not only not giving me endo symptom relief, but also not providing me with contraceptive cover (which they took over 2 months to tell me whilst I wasn’t using anything with my partner!). I also ended up having lots of UTI’s, thrush, Strep B and Strep H infections too.

I’ve now also got periods with this new one which I’ve not had before and is annoying to say the least, especially now the NHS no longer gives period delay and you have to buy it

Yes, mine must have dropped and embedded into my cervix. Because the strings settled into the perfect place I was consistently told there was no problem and there was no reason for my constant pain.

No one asked about my periods, apparently the fact I had regular monthly periods for the 18 months with a coil showed it wasn’t working.

If you’re having regular monthly periods I was told this shows it’s not working (mine fell into my cervix like yours and caused constant pain while giving me no protection). I’d talk to a health professional about that

I’m of the thinking that if you’re not born with something don’t have anything permanent or semi permanent put in.

This for me, includes tampons. That way nothing can get stuck or lost in the body.

I had one fitted a couple of years ago with no issue. Except it did not stop my periods so I now take micronised progesterone alongside it.

Coils can sometimes be expelled though. Maybe more likely if you had it fitted soon after childbirth or/and you have heavy painful periods ( the cramps can push it out)

Seen babies born holding them though. That’s a subtle FU

I've had no issues with mine, it's the first in a long line of contraceptives that seem to work!

I am however due a smear test soon and going to ask then to check the strings as I think mine have been cut short, can only feel them sometimes. No periods though so still seems to be working well.

I have had 2 coils but they really haven't suited me, which I'm gutted about as am told it's good for perimenopause!! The 2nd one the doctor fitted while I was under a general anaesthetic due to having a procedure done at the same time. She cut the strings too short!! First nurse called in back up... No luck. I was sent to someone in a different doctors surgery who was a "pro" at getting them out... No luck!! Ended up in gyne who after a few tries and got it!!

Hopefully they will find yours once you are in the right hands x

Most people won't have these kind of issues.

I had mine inserted a year ago and it's been brilliant. I still have cycles at 52 but my "perimenopausal periods of doom" now involve zero bleeding. What a relief!

The insertion was a bit uncomfortable but easily manageable. I had local anaesthetic spray beforehand and a second nurse type person at my head end making sure I was ok (it was funny when I met her again in the sexual health stall at my local Pride 😂).

Can't say I'm looking forward to having it removed but it'll have been worth it!

Got my gynae appointment tomorrow morning and like someone mentioned here they are more experienced and have the right equipment and time rather than at the GP practice.

My GPs dont do them any more, I had to travel to the nearest sexual health clinic, I suspect the plus of that was they really knew what they were doing and I had a good experience.

I remember the first time at work I saw one of these coils up in the abdomen on xray. I didnt know they could do that.

Its quite rare, maybe only seen it about 5-6 times. Usually they fall out the other way I hear.

Oddly, when it was low lying and in the wrong place I had no periods!

Iv been delaying intervention for mine that has gone Mia.

Always had coils since like 16 and never had any issues but then they couldn't find this one after I had my daughter until I had an ultrasound

Now need it out and I can't face the horror of how they'll even find it never mind remove it

I'm due to have it replaced in September but I've asked to go to women's clinic to been sedated if possible, absolutely dreading!

Im on my third Marina coil. Best thing I did. Every time the tails got lost. Whent to the gym and they are able to get it out. Not gonna lie it is sore in and out but its a forgettable pain. Bit like cramp for an hour or so. Not had a period in 15 years.... yay

To be fair, I’ve had some very deep and quite hard sex since then and all has been fine so I don’t think it’s a regular thing. The insertion for me was terrible but now it’s in it’s not a problem at all.

I would say get it done at a sexual health clinic rather than by a GP. The clinics do it so much more often it makes the process less stressful and painful for all.

I could feel initially just the strings, sharp poke in the top of my knob. These were cut shorter and then I could feel something else. Seemed to settle down after a month or so.

I've had 3 with no problems but I had to have scans to confirm my 4th is still in the right place when the strings vanished. I'm prepared to insist on maximum pain relief for removal but I'll still have it replaced because it's the thing that's worked best for me and it'll probably be the last one anyway.

. Your GP could prescribe micronised progesterone to help regulate bleeding ( stopped mine)
