How worried should I be?

Meet a guy on Thursday last week, and went back to his hotel. Started off without protection and then put on a condom. I topped, but first time with a guy and now I'm out of my mind worried about catching something - he said he was clean but how worried should I be and should I get myself checked?

Always get checked.

Better safe than sorry and it's the only way you'll get peace of mind.

It's good form for us all to have regular testing. The clinics will also recommend sexual health services relevant to your interests. These can include preventative measures, against HIV, syphilis, gonorrhoea, hepatitis etc.

There's a latent period from the point of infections until testing can show its presence. And some people don't show any symptoms of some diseases.

I'd phone your local clinic, get their advice and book testing for an appropriate date and to discuss your overall situation.

Should I be trying to get PEP? It's coming up 72 hours. But it's the weekend and the clinics don't open until 9am?!

OP you did take a risk. You can’t shy away from that. As the others have said you should be testing regularly. Best thing to do is to go to your local sexual health clinic and talk it through with them if you are worried.

Moving forward make sure you get yourself checked regularly and play safe in the future. Take a deep breath now and try not to worry too much. The health professionals will know best. Good luck.

I do get myself tested regularly, but it's the first time I've taken such a risk and now I'm in panic mode

I understand. I know it is easier said than done but you have to take a deep breath and stop the panic. The odds are very much in your favour. Get to a clinic first thing in the morning and take it from there. You will be in good hands.

1 thing you could do, is to communicate with your partner. He may reveal that he takes prophylactic measures, such as PrEP, as this reduces HIV potentially as good as condoms, plus he would be tested as HIV negative, to be prescribed it.

PEP treatment may be available via A&E, when clinics are closed.

Due to the increased widespread use of PrEP, as well as people taking HIV Meds for active treatments, which means that such HIV positive people are undetectable for the virus.

We can only give our opinions, not medical advice. It's probably best to consult the NHS or medical professionals for appropriate guidance.

It was a silly thing to do, but I'm regularly tested and I regret it a lot. I'm not not looking for pitty, just genuine advice about what to do next! I'll be booking an appointment at the clinic in the morning, but I was mostly worried about whether I needed to try and get emergency PEP or anything like that.

Yep, all he said was he was clean and has gone dark. Hopefully he's telling the truth and he's up to date on his testing.

"Nope, just "I'm clean". I asked about prep and when he was last tested but radio silence since Saturday. "

I have 2 bits of info to share, the first may sound worrying, the second more reassuring.

1. He said he's clean - the amount of guys on fab who don't understand STIs is scary - I have met guys who weren't aware that sris can be transmitted orally., or guys who think pep protects for all stis.

So, no matter whar he says, you do what testing you want for your own peace of mind

2 Id you topped without a condom and didn't enajcukate then the risks of transmission are much lower than if you were the recipient. You're prob ok. Don't fret too much . Your anxiety is because you stepped out of your comfort zone

Does his profile/veris mention bareback / breeding / safety / testing? Usually a good indication what he's like.

Pep is usually only given to anal bottoms. They will be reluctant to prescribe to anal tops because the risk is so low.

There isn't much you can do now OP, stop worrying, just get your self tested regularly and keep an eye on things.

Always a risk, despite what people say. Of course 99% of people will tell you they are clean. Either without knowing or just lie.

You only put it in once, I'm SURE you will be fine.

Yes to both. Apparently the risk is lower but it's still a risk.

You can also get chlamydya in your eyes

If you topped him, he’s more likely to contract any STIs you might be carrying, to be fair.

If you’re going to play bareback then you should consider discussing PrEP with your GP to minimise your risk of HIV infection, though it won’t protect you against any of the others.

I'm sure that you will be just fine.

It's a good habit to get into to get checked out fairly regularly though..

Hereford clinic is great, I have event prep and fully tested every 3 months, ask to see someone's results if you are meeting, if they are tested and clear then they should not have a problem showing their results......if anything they should be pleased you are responsible aswell!

Get tested regularly and consider prep (either event or daily). Testing only proves someone wad clear at the point of test, some STIs if caught closely before test may not show and obviously if someone has had sex since test ....

First rule of swinging club -

Guys will say absolutely anything to get laid.

Second rule of swinging club - see first.

I mean, if you can't trust a complete stranger, who can you trust ?

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye...

Get yourself tested, and be more careful in future.

No point in trying to rush it as there is a dormant stage and you will have to wait until that has passed before getting tested or you may get a false negative.

Everyone makes mistakes. Hope you're OK op.

Discussing stis on a site such as this in an adult and supportive way has to be a good thing though.

Bear in mind the time periods for STI's to show up in a test. Recent activity may not be covered by the test.
