Mainly for the ladies really.

My wife has had this disease for many years. It's settled down a lot now from the first few years, she was on all sorts of meds including steroids, but now takes no meds at all and just lives with it.

But what this wretched illness has left her with are recto-vaginal fistula's. Those who know, know.

Our sex life has been non existent for a decade now because she's in a bit of a mess down there and embarrassed about it.

Just wondering if we're on our own with this on here?

I'm sure there must be others with the same issues. Has her GP been any help with it ?

It's my understanding that active disease is the underlying cause of th fistulas.

when the disease is in remission for several years th fistulas should clear themselves up.

There are also operations/procedures one can have done

Does she not have a specialist gastro to discuss?

She needs a referral from her GP.

Very rarely will these be sorted without surgical intervention.

Maybe even go to a private clinic for either/or a private consultation/second opinion or for the costs for private surgery.

I tend to always use our local Spire for second opinions, usually only around £100 for a basic consultation. Money well spent if it puts your mind at ease.

For me, the first port of call would be GP to start the ball rolling.

Good luck.

I have a friend who see's a Gastro Consultant call Singh in St.Georges Tooting. He tries to treat things with drugs and works with dietician to cut out certain foods which promote outbreaks. Not a miracle worker but it works for some. My sister has Ulcerative Colitis for 30 years. Fistula, how awful. Best of luck to your wife.

Crohns is an awful disease, but if not too far advanced can be “helped” by diet and drugs.

Ask about the FODMAP diet, all foods are graded red, amber and green. You can eat anything green, occasional ambers and avoid all reds. Also avoid things like onion - that tends to really exacerbate it.

Ask your GP about Adalumimab - it’s been an absolute game changer for my son.

Good luck x

Thank you for all your advice. Honestly, it's soooo much appreciated.

She's had this for 20 odd years now, and has settled down considerably. Yes, she has to be careful what she eats, but manageable.

Thank you all again.

Does your wife have a Gastro consultant? Maybe see if she could have an appointment with colorectal consultant to discuss treatment of the fistula.

She had the fistula dealt with years ago.

The problem with fistula's are that when the 'tunnel' is repaired and blocked, it burrows another one elsewhere.

Terrible thing. X

The NHS care standards in north staffs are awful , there are a lot of "nurses" and doctors that shouldnt be in the care system

But because of staff shortages theyll employ anyone just to fill a gap.

My brother spent 3 months in hospital last year and had to have 4 major surgeries

The nurses were a disgrace and so neglectful they spend a lot of time chit chatting

And last year I saw first hand how bone idle some of them are

I was visiting my brother on the critical care ward at royal stoke hospital and patients were buzzing for help

The nurses were busy putting up christmas decorations etc around the staff desk and ignored people calling for help

I overheard Them talking about their social lives and where theyre going on holiday etc they just seemed to do the bare minimum where work was concerned

A lot of lazy people in the system

Then there were others that were very good but those were few and far between

Its a horrible place to be if you're in for a long time like my brother was

You probably wouldnt notice it if you were only in for a couole of days.

What does this have to do with crohns?"

Sorry thats what my eldest brother has had for 30 years its really been awful for the past 5 years and it nearly killed him last year he had to have two emergency operations as he got sepsis twice in his pelvis

Crohns is horrible and a lot of the time it gets worse with age

Its a horrible illness and really gets you down the fatigue ithere seems no end to it at times
