I had a post oh here earlier this year about getting the HPV vaccine.

Just wanted to update that I had the second injection yesterday and am feeling fine.

No idea if it will make any difference but in my mind it makes me that little bit safer.

How do you know that you haven't got it already?

It's quite expensive is it not?

They test you for it before they offer you the vaccine, at least they did when we had it. No good shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

I thought that there was no recognise routine tests available for men. Anal pap for high risk men can be done.

This is correct. Only men who have sex with men can be vaccinated on the NHS. And as the lady above states, there is no real test available for men. My wife asked me to get vaccinated as she wanted to do it as well. It is not an easy thing to do, or cheap.

I only ever heard of this STI in the last couple of years, after I was told it’s ‘common’ with certain groups on FAB, but not really talked about.

I enquired about a vaccine through BUPA healthcare and they said they do not advise to adult males, and even in adult females from the age of about 25 onward it becomes less effective. They should have it when they are teenagers.

They also said something like 80% of people have it or have had it

Oh, and if you are a female, you can check on the NHS app if you have had it, this app is pretty amazing if you are not already using it shows every single event done by the NHS right back to your birth….

It is not an STI, it's a virus and its very common and mainly undetected. About 90% of people would have had/have it without any signs. Your body should fit the infection off naturally over a year or two.

It is an STI because the way it is caught is by having unprotected sex with someone that has it. So maybe technically it is a sexually transmitted virus.?

Actually even condom wearing people can catch it. Any skin down near the groin can sadly pass it on

Exactly that. It's skin to skin and almost unavoidable.

The sexual health clinic offered me for free years ago. I had to go back 3 or 4 times to be fully vaccinated

Genital skin to skin contact only. Main way is it is spread is unprotected vaginal & anal sex amd sometimes oral and sharing of sex toys.

Condoms provide a significant protection although not hundred percent.

The attitude that everyone has it and there’s nothing you can do about it is simply not true. Studies show that wearing condoms both reduces your chances of getting it and speeds up the recovery if you have it

Oh gosh yes absolutely. Safe sex definitely to lesser the chance etc. Nobody should think they are beyond catching anything. I agree with what you say.

Yes the body can fight it off but it remains dormant in the body therefore you can still pass it on.. If you have it in the throat it can be spread through kissing. It's a little bugger of a virus and yes there are 100s of thousands who have it.

HPV is responsible for the majority of throat cancers now.

So getting vaccinated is sensible - they best time to get it is before you are sexually active. However, the vaccine does offer protection.

There is no test to see if you already have HPV. But I have heard that even if you have it, the vaccine will give you increased protection. And a shot cost around £100 to £150. So not that expensive,

Even though HPV classified as a STI, via oral, vaginal, anal and very close skin on skin. There are over 200 different strains and in most cases is self clearing.

Two strains need to be looked out for 16 and 18, both are known to cause cancer in men and women (cervical and head and neck), for those who are unlucky.

The vaccine covers the nine main stains. So even with the double doze vaccine you can still get one of 191 strains so it's not a cover all.

If anyone wants to talk about head and neck cancer, DM me.

Dangerous nonsense. It is transmitted sexually and several strains cause serious health issues, including cancer

All vaccines that can protect against illness are fantastic and we are lucky to have them.

However HPV can be spread without sexual contact

80% of women and 90% of men are likely to contract a form of HPV during their life and thankfully the vast majority will not even be aware and their immune system will deal with it.

1 in 3 men are likely infected right now !!

About 10% of people getting HPV will get a dangerous lingering variety

Only around 5% -15% of this 10% will develop cervical cancer so although the risk is small, anyone offered the vaccine should take it without question.

Not quite.

HPV can be transmitted by any intimate act, sexual penetration isn't needed.

Most of us will succumb to the virus and never realise it, that's why percentages are difficult to quantify as most people who have the virus will never present to healthcare professionals.

For a small percentage the virus will be the driver for a gynae or, as in my case, a head and neck cancer.

Children are now receiving vaccine.

My understanding of HPV, men can carry it and give it to others.

So why not let them get the vaccine, not sure if she is still on here, but a TV/TS developed throat cancer due to sucking men cocks. One of them had HPV, and she suffered.
