Hard.shoulder of the M1

As part of my continuing project of screwing myhealth up ever since Covid, I now seemingly have high blood pressure.

I’ve a GP appt to discuss the readings I’ve been collecting and they’re inevitably going to put me on some pills as a couple of times it’s been just shy of the magic 180/120 level where your head explodes.

Are some treatments better than others?

I’m specifically wanting to avoid side-effects which ruin my bedroom activities.

Anything which might improve that is a bonus.

Obviously I’m prepared to be a good boy, as I don’t want a stroke or a heart attack.

That's very high. Hope you're seeing your GP soon.

Usually you are started on Amlodipine. A woman i know had very high blood pressure and was put on this. A bit of adjustment with the dosage and the blood pressure is now under control, not usually higher than 130 now

It’s usually 140/90, just has huge surges for some reason.

I'm a few months ahead of you on this. I had the first few months of pills and then the raised dose. Bp has settled on being about perfect now.

No effects on performance in any way. Slightly more prone to a bit of a headrush if I stand up quickly

That is high pal, I had a hypertensive crisis just over 2 years ago and it was the worst experience i've ever had, glad you are getting looked after just before that happens.... absolutely right about the head exploding explanation... excruciating!

The pills should help alot to bring it down, diet too if that is another cause.

Good luck

A big thing we can do is to reduce the body that the heart is having to power. Don't cut anything off . Reducing a few pounds will make a good difference.

Obviously, avoid as much salt as you can in your diet, as this impacts blood pressure higher

We all respond to medication differently, including the side effects. They will prescribe what they perceive to be the best, based on your health profile and NICE guidelines. You can look up the typical meds. They will likely prescribe the lowest dose, to see how you respond. Some may have more typical and frequent side effects at the higher doses.

Increasing your exercise levels will help you a lot. Progressively increase effective exercise that will raise your pulse level, by several minutes a day.

As others have said, Amlodipine 5mg is a typical starting point.

Be prepared to go through several different medications before you find the best one for you.

I went through several, I'm on a bit of a cocktail of various things.

Blood pressure was harder to get under control than diabetes I personally found.

Usual stuff.

Stop with the high sodium intake, booze, try to lose weight, regular exercise.

This is what you will be told.

Once you start looking at food labels you'll go crazy with the amount of salt, fat and sugar in stuff , good luck and follow your GP advice.

High blood pressure affects your ability to achieve and maintain an erection (vessels constrict reducing blood flow to the important area. So anything that lowers blood pressure will help you. If it takes you too low and you end up exhausted and unable to function then see your doctor and change your pills/dosage.

It’s been a year since I was higher than your high reading on both measures. I take one pill a day and all is good, in every sense.

Unwanted salt exists in breakfast cereals and coffees, things that you would normal want to sweeten not salinate. Keeping hydrated would always be good advice.

The thing you need to worry about is kidney damage. Damaged kidneys mean uncontrolled hypertension and that means more kidney damage in a vicious circle. That's what happened with mine, now in in end stage CKD.

All in less than 10 years.

That is very high. Do you know what’s causing it?

Mine got as high as 129/85 a year or so ago, I dramatically reduced the amount of cigarettes I smoke, ditched all cooking oils and replaced with extra-virgin olive oil, that’s the only oil I use now , reduced coffee started drinking a pint of water with a bit of fresh lemon juice every morning and within a month it was right back down in the healthy range …105/76 today

I wouldn't over think possible side effects, we all react differently to the medication. The only issue I've had is swollen ankles from Amlodipine.

At it's worst my BP was 210/115. I now take Ramipril, Lacidipine and Bisoprolol and things are getting better.

Good luck with your blood pressure

Just go with your GP advice.

It makes no difference what others have been prescribed as each patient is different.

Every medication can cause side effects but again, each person is different.

Good luck.

Got Rampiril, gently increasing exercise, was already hydrating and trying to eat better.

Almost cut out caffeine.

Suspect I need to address work stress as well.

Get a home BP monitor and track it daily . Take the advice of your GP and keep pushing for answers.

I regular go into hypertensive crisis ( almost daily ) which has now cause my kidneys to leak, bleeds behind my eyes and my heart is struggling to keep up with the demand as now have a thicker heart wall. This is all due to prolonged high BP over the last 18mths and not managing to find the correct combination of meds to manage it. I’ve got approx 10mths before something fails

I’ve just started on Rampiril

Diet and everything is good anyway - only issue I have is stress that I can’t do anything about - ie just life

Awaiting to see the results over the next few weeks

What was interesting - had let’s say quite a fun session last Tuesday so thought I’d take a viagra for fun - checked my BP and it was text book perfect !

Maybe just take that all the time !

Checked all the info and no warnings at all about taking both (actually said no problems)- naturally that was a one off and have blood test due in a few weeks to make sure all is well

Worth adding that the key concern is of taking both is too low pressure and mine was text book

Sorry you are going through all that pal, I've been in a hypertensive crisis myself a couple of times and it really isn't fun at all! I've got the eye damage you mention along with some other issues too.

I really wish you the best with it all and hope you manage to finally get it down a bit more consistently at the very least

After reacting to the COVID vaccine my blood pressure went through the roof. The prescribed medicine did a better job of shrinking my cock to the extent that erections were impossible and I had to pee sitting down. I started taking nattokinase supplements which brought down my blood pressure by breaking up the fibrin sludge in my blood caused by the COVID vaccine. I have up on the prescribed medication and my cock grew back.
