Every year I forget how bad it is! Hit me like a brick today and it's barely autumn.

Any suggestions - other than vitamin D supplements and exercise? I go to the gym every day for a full body workout, swim, sauna, and already take enough supplements (inc vitD) that I rattle when shaken lmao

"Someone was telling me the other day that antihistamines helped them with Sad last year. "

Oh really? That's super interesting, I take them a lot anyway for COVID prevention (science backed - a study found that H1 antihistamines occupy the same receptors as the virus, and my own experience has very much matched this) so might up my doses from "whenever I go somewhere busy" to daily and see if it helps.

Thanks!

Moving somewhere where I always want to be outside has made the world of difference to me. Have proper clothes for if the weather is being rubbish, but that connection to nature and natural daylight combined with exercising outdoors when I can has been an absolute game changer for me.

Hope you find something that works for you, we’re all very different with what our bodies need.

Important to get outdoors if you can. Even dull days will give some light. There are receptors in the eyes which hpart of the eye which when stimulated by sunlight help produce serotonin. There are also special lights you can use indoors which do the same job.. if you have time and can afford it some winter sunshine on Spain or the Canaries is good too. Vit D

If possible get a holiday in the sun.

We are in Canaries this month and to go swimming in the sea, get sun on your bones, laugh and have fun with like minded people is wonderful.

It also helps as a happy memory to draw on when your day is dark when you go to work and dark before you leave for home.

I've often sat in the car on the drive home one dark, miserable evening and drawn from the memory, like today of being naked on a hot beach and running into the sea to cool off.

If you look around there are some really cheap flights available.

Go on, get them booked

the last poster's got a point, OP. It sounds like you're doing all you can to take the edge of this thing you dislike, i.e winter. If you disliked it less, the edge wouldn't be as sharp. and it's a cycle: you dislike the winter, you can't get over the SAD which makes you dislike winter more. So find things about winter you like. This is easier said than done because winter means more artificial light and heat, more layers of clothes and winter is noisy - rain, wind and tyres on wet roads. Winter also contains the single biggest nut ache of the year (Chr****s), so it won't be easy. I like winter because I embrace hibernation mode. Hibernation mode is nature's excuse to sack off doing a whole bunch of things and get under a duvet with and watch a film and not feel guilty about it.

Find exclusive things to LOVE about winter. Difficult but worth it.

"

That's a great challenge, and in fact, once you start looking, there's loads of great stuff, especially if you 'winterise' your life style, for me, this means fitting mountain bike style tyres and mud guards to my gravel bike and getting my cycling waterproofs out so that I can play in the mud on my bike. Also, jumpers and or a decent coat to go for long walks amongst the fallen leafs.

Coming home to a hot shower with just candles for light and then a hot chocolate is just an added bonus. 😀

I understand that, we don't fly off on a whim, it's not as expensive as most people think with very cheap flights and great deals on Airbnb for apartments.

Lots of people do it, lots are here now, we've met them

Hopefully, obe day it would ge lovely to bump into you too

I have an alarm clock with a built in SAD light.

30 minutes before the alarm buzzer goes off the light comes on very dim and slowly reaches full brightness.

It has two purposes. It mimics the rising of the sun so you feel better and as you are awoken gently there is no sudden startlement.

It is a rare occasion that the buzzer actually goes off for me and some mornings I have to get up at 3am. Have had it for 10 years and zero complaints

"Just start liking it!" "Just have more money!" "Just get over it!" Wow, a lot of you really have no concept of compassion. Take a good hard look at yourself and your treatment of others sometime.

I appreciate the people who shared kind, thoughtful responses, but unfortunately none of the ideas are new to me - seems I'm already doing everything within my power.

I won't be checking this thread again, the attitudes on display here aren't something I wish to engage with or feature in my day.

I don't mind colder..it's the darkness and the damp that drives me up a wall!

My granny's house (when she was alive) in America showed not one sign of damp even though the snow outside was piled up higher than a car or bungalow in some places and I actually needed sunglasses in Winter there.

This is a great thread (bar the one negative poster!!). If you don’t suffer you don’t know, it normally hits me when the clocks change - driving home in the dark and sometimes going to work when it’s dark too. I have access to showers at work so I take my bike in and ride at lunchtimes if it’s not peeing down or frozen - that helps so I get my daylight fix. But if the weather is pants then my mood and energy levels do suffer. For this reason I find the summer solstice a depressing day as it’s all downhill until the winter solstice when I know the days start to get longer.

There’s some interesting suggestion, Vit D I take in the winter already but the magnesium is an interesting one as is anti histamine. I’d be very interested to hear what difference this makes.

As for the Canaries - we did a mid November break and that helped - lifted my mood as looking forward to it, the benefit when there as well but sadly can’t afford this year.

Keep busy, get out if possible & make the most of the daylight hours you still have. There are still around 7-8 hours daylight available in the UK on December 21st.

Bit extreme but we moved to North Brazil. Pretty much 12 hours day abd 12 hours night all year.

I miss the long summer nights but I hated the long dark winter nights so much more.

OP, I see you've been using vitamin d supplements but have you ever tried the injection? I didn't find supplements did much, even on a high dosage but the injection has really my mood and immune system. I have the vitamin b12 one as well which is great for energy levels.

It's roughly £30 and lasts about 3 months, it might be worth looking at?

"Lightbox. Been a game changer for me. I got mine from Lumie. They do, or did then, a trial period and after that you can send it back. Reminds me, I must get mine out!"

Absolutely agree here, my Lumie has made all the difference on a morning. If I’m working away and don’t have it in my hotel I certainly miss it. Well worth the investment

Winter only activities. I've got a woodburner and did a winter foraging course, so now 8 embrace and enjoy it. Failing that, a good winter coat, lots of blankets or a southern hemisphere holiday

If you suffer every year surely investment in a lamp would be the best route

"Someone was telling me the other day that antihistamines helped them with Sad last year.

Oh really? That's super interesting, I take them a lot anyway for COVID prevention (science backed - a study found that H1 antihistamines occupy the same receptors as the virus, and my own experience has very much matched this) so might up my doses from "whenever I go somewhere busy" to daily and see if it helps.

Thanks! "

I've got some in a tube. I will try rubbing it on my cock.

Meanwhile I will get my sad lamp out of the cupboard until March.

I definately suffer from SAD. I like sun and warmth. One day when I grow up I want to move somewhere it is warm and sunny all year round

How I manage is by keeping busy and having things to look forward to as it would be so easy to be like a bear and hibernate for the winter

I only just realised that I missed the inception of this thread five weeks ago. Trying to think what the weather was like then as a possible reason for so many feeling low.

I could understand the effect of the anticyclonic

gloom which we had last week. That was grim. It is lovely and bright today and I am cheerful even though I'm sitting in the hospital waiting to have something done in a while which I am still in two minds about leaving well alone.

I can relate to a previous poster who said that it is downhill all the way from June 21st. I watch almost daily, at Eureka, the sun going progressively behind the trees as the months advance.

Conversely, even though it is midwinter, I get excited by increasing daylight as January unfolds.

I used to go to the West Indies for a long winter break, sometimes two if the air fares were cheap, straddling Carnival, accomodation cost less than staying at home with the heating on. Alas that is no longer doable for me any more.

What I do like about spring is that the trees are bare so any bright days are generally more effective and dramatic.

Meanwhile, it will be the lamp each morning for an hour between waking up and getting up.

It also affects me in Spring, when the sun is brighter in the mornings.

It's not just a lack of sunlight. It's a physiological reaction to sunlight, or lack of.

It wears off after a while, as my brain gets used to it. I try to do things to take my mind off it. It also affects sleep and energy levels. At the worst time I suffer with anhedonia and low motivation. Going for a walk doesn't always improve my symptoms. It's not just feeling a little sad, or down-which a lot of people feel in winter.

There is a part of the eye which, when hit by sunlight, helps to produce serotonin, which is a mood raiser. So even on dull days, getting outdoors into the daylight, such as it might be, can boost your serotonin levels. For those at work stuck indoors, this can be difficult. I can stop during the day and sit in the sun, as I'm self-employed and am usually out and about.

Lightbox, early in morning, or as much natural light as possible AM. Hard to do some days. Use light box when working morning and afternoon if you can. Easier with a desk job.

Vit D alone isn't the answer. But is good for your health.

"the last poster's got a point, OP.

Difficult but worth it."

I'll second this I read a lot. Sit buy a fire 🔥 real one and read.

4000iu is not too high. For that to happen you’d need tonne taking a lot more and tbh you won’t find stronger than 4000iu without difficulty.

For OP I’ll add that having a dog is a cheat code for this. Forces me to get out for fresh air and walks even if it’s dark or whatever and it helps.

I’d suggest running / walking when it’s still dark and quiet (early morning) as you’ll learn to enjoy the fresh air and endorphins and build a positive relationship with the dark etc.

But unfortunately in the world we live in that may not be the safest idea being a woman. Depending where you live I suppose and how comfortable you feel.

There's an interesting article today in the Guardian online on this subject.

It suggests sitting in front of a 10,000 lux light box for up to 1 hour 5 times a week and the key is to do it before 10am.
