Hello

Has anyone outside the target group gone private and had the HPV vaccine?

I am a big fan of vaccination and opt for anything available on the NHS but I considered to old for this.

Interested in others thoughts.

It is an incredibly effective vaccine and has had a huge positive impact on the sexual health of the cohort it was originally given to.

If you can afford it I would say go for it. But then again I'd say that for any vaccines because they save lives.

I agree I’m so glad my kids have gotten this vaccine. I recently had an abnormal smear with HPV present so worrying few weeks before the all clear from colposcopy.

Would advise any sexually active adult to get any vaccine that's available. Would love to get the jab if it's £180 it cost nothing compared to having HPV related throat cancer or cervical cancer. Pls where can I get it? Am 45 so NHS won't give.

Hey Mike

I was too old to get it through the sexual health service on the NHS, so I paid for it at a pharmacy. Pharmacist said that a lot of people were doing this. Though the vaccine is less effective after you have become sexually active, it still offer protection and there is now evidence that vaccination at any age gives you increased protection - including some forms of cancer.

The cost is pretty minimal, so why not?

See a good pharmacist - they will advise. One where you an get vaccinations would probably do it.

It is around the per shot - you would need 3 shot. Shots are spread over 6 months

It eliminates 60% of oesophageal cancer in men. Worth it just for that. If you are female - it eliminates 100% of cervical cancer. 100%….. it’s a wonder drug.

Paid £230 for it, was in two doses a couple of years apart. Worth it as a play bare a lot, so another layer of protection.

As a side note, it wore me out for a few weeks, was so tired.

The sexual health clinic at the Central Middlesex Hospital will give it to for free even beyond 45. They will also accept people from out of area so you can get m-pox vaccine while you are at it.

Few months ago I had to have LLETZ for abnormal cells (after a long wait confirmed as stage two pre cancerous cells, which is a good result) it was a difficult procedure and I got two infections afterwards one minor one major.

Before all this happened I was already a fan of the HPV vaccine, multiple studies worldwide have shown it to be incredibly effective against not just HPV but several cancers.

Now I'm even more so.

This was something my pharmacist said to me.

Seriously, I wish I knew about this vaccine earlier and was able to get this and the other vaccines offered to me.

I'm guessing that guidelines have been drawn up, based on the available evidence at the time. Plus, for the NHS, limited budgets, restricting services. Things can be slow to change

I've seen NHS staff upset, when they are wasting treatments like this. It's horrible for them. But, largely, they don't have authority or any ability to break rules and potentially that could leave them open to dismissal etc, should they do so.

I wasn't aware of a reliable test for the various HPV viruses for men. Where/how did you get that testing?

Women can have cervical testing, for example and do so.

I went for a check up and was offered both the HPV and Hep vaccine for free less than a week ago.

I'm genuinely surprised by the amount of people that have to pay for these vaccines, I just assumed it was all free on the NHS, that's how they made it seem to me.

it will only stop you getting other sprains of hpv. Most middle aged women already have one or more of the riskier strains. So it won't work against these
