"Been on allopurinol for ten years now,my main trigger is the artificial sweeteners in drinks" Yeah, I really cut back on energy drinks after the first attack.... also creatine and protein shakes after working out.

"Proteins often set mine off too,had to change a lot of my diet" Eliminating and slowly reintroducing certain foods and drinks once on the right dose of allopurinol was key. Along as i keep well hydrated and keep off the already mentioned stuff, I'm usually ok.

"I have suffered it for over 10 years, only occasional bouts, no meds apart from Naproxen for it happens. Trigger for me tends to be Whiskey " Fair play to no meds.... unfortunately for me, once the gout has flared up nothing helps until it eases off by itself. Allopurinol does keep the amount of flares very limited fortunately.

I really try to limit any anti inflammatories as i have hypertension too, obviously doesn't help with that either.

"Stubbed my toe and got it , thought it must have been a fracture On alluprinol seems to work, it's awful " Similar experience here, I work on my feet all day and thought i must have accidentally done something to it. Got home, decided to have a couple of beers to take to edge off (worst thing obvs) and put my foot up. Waking up in the early hours feeling like my foot was on fire, wasn't fun, as i'm sure you well know.

"Got it but two allopurinol a day prevents attacks plus using voltarol to relieve inflammation. Brought on by prawns and mushrooms on holiday." I'm on two allopurinol a day too. I take a Colchicine tablet or two if I feel a twinge and usually keeps it off.

"My diet is pretty good (been a healthy veggie for about 15 years) but my trigger is alcohol. I have had gout about 4 times in my life. Most occasions were after stag do’s and most recently last weeks BBQ that got out of hand. " Yes, alcohol is a trigger for me too as it dehydrates me, I limit how much I drink these days tbh.

"Suffered really badly for years been on allopurinol now for 30 years and it's kept under control. Did have colchicine for flares up" I used to use colchicine as an arrestor for cell division (stopped at mitosis). So I could count chromosomes - previous job, totally useless information but your comment brought it back 😁

"So i’m reading a book on sexual history of england…. One chapter is about aphrodisiacs…. Stay with me here… 1500’s to 1800’s and more gout was rife here, the rest of europe had low rates of it. It was put down to the English ate a diet of loads of meat and high consumption of wine, cider and beer… where as the rest of europe had way lower meat consumption….." used to be called the rich man's ailment as supposed to be brought on by red meat and port

"I was just wondering if there are any fellow sufferers on here? I've been on allopurinol 3 years and only get gout attacks when dehydrated these days. What are your triggers?" "get attack's of it they put me on allopurinol but not attacks for 2 years so i came off then as just taking them seems like just having some thing i just take naproxen when i get a twinge and that stops 2 tables ma be a year soon do that than 365 allopurinol a year " If you suffer gout flares your uric acid levels are clearly elevated, untreated or not managed properly can in some cases cause kidney problems. I'd take the allopurinol personally.

"I’d agree with the above. If you are getting a couple of acute attacks a year then it’s not under control, and if it’s not under control then there is potentially long term damage. I understand the reluctance to take long term medication but allopurinol has a good history of being safe, and definitely safer than regular flare ups of gout (however infrequent). " Well said pal ![]()

A pharmacist recommended Feminax (spelling?) for period pain, helps with gout too

"I’m a sufferer. I take colchecine for flare-ups. Haven’t discovered my triggers yet as they don’t happen too often, thank God cos they’re agony when they do. Have been affecting my right big toe, but has recently spread to the Achilles tendon on the same foot " I’m thinking mine has been caused by Covid which I had recently because I’ve also had my kidney stones playing up and causing a uti or possibly the antibiotics I’m taking for it I’ve just not felt right recently
