There are so many anti-depressants being prescribed.

The thread Sertraline was so popular, and hopefully helpful, it'd be good to continue.

Forgive me for saying, (only an opinion) I think anti depressants are being over prescribed. I understand they help people but I can't help think that doctors or other medical professionals just use them as the easy option.🤔

Unfortunately the best (combined) help is therapy. This is either expensive or has a long waiting list.

Yeah, I know you're right... It annoys me that the government ( won't mention who) made such huge cut backs in social treatment. The ripple effect is massive and will take years to recover, if it ever does 😔

That's exactly what in talking about...I can understand that given your situation you may have been feeling down and awful (who could possibly blame you) however it's more of an emotional distressed state (situationally) as opposed to a depressed (especially clinically) state. The symptoms are similar however the causes are completely different. I think sometimes doctors miss this and simply just sign a prescription for ease. 🤔

I've had diazepam, dothiepin, fluoxitine and now sertraline. I thought sertraline was by far the best but of course this is a very individual thing.

The one thing that trumps the lot is talking over a coffee or beer with my closest friends and sharing our hopes and fears. That is the best therapy of all.

I was prescribed setraline at first, didn't feel like they were doing anything, then they switched me to metazipine (my apologies for spelling that completely wrong) they definitely helped me sleep but damn did i feel crap during the day.

I've stopped taking them (my own choice) I definitely don't feel as blah during the day and some days do feel like I'm winning the fight...to be honest I've not talked to anyone about this really as I don't know what to do ,do I go back and ask for something different again or do I go on without anything..I just don't want to be taking them all my life that's one of my worries

Which is why talking therapies are advocated.

As a society many people have lost the social support of family/neighbours/friends compared to decades ago. We are a fractured society.

It will be dependent on the cause(s) of the depression to how long you'll be on them. If you have made headway yourself, acknowledge that.

Must add, don't ever use alcohol as a strategy. It is a depressant.

I agree totally. I feel lonely a lot even when I was in a relationship. Family 200 miles away. Winter is always hardest for be, quite I get SAD, plus all my social life is summer based, cricket, golf etc. I do walking football and they have a good social side too. Lots of blokes in the group struggle with mental health.

I find exercise is the best way for me to cope and clear my head. I'm not much of a talker, just like most men, so going for a run, out for a cycle, or playing football really helps.

Perhaps, but for some of us who suffer from neurochemical imbalances, they really are the only option. Either that or accept the fact we'll never feel normal. Mental illnesses aren't things that can be understood by anyone who's never suffered them.

Recently I have come off sertraline. Have been on it for several years and although slowly the dose had to be increased it kept me steady. Things started to go wrong again last year with the loss of my job and then the sudden loss of my girlfriend of 18 years. Xmas was a particularly horrible time. I was maxed out on sertraline. So they have swapped me. Now on venlafaxine. Early days.

This medication can increase blood pressure, so do allow the GP to keep an eye on it.

Thing is not everything can be fixed with talking, it helps definitely but when the life problems behind Anxiety/Stress/Depression are very real, then help is as far as it goes.

In my case I have a wife with MS and in a wheelchair and my son is autistic and I was working shifts in a high pressure manufacturing industry.

Talking couldn’t fix any of those things but it did help but not enough.

In the end the only real improvement I could do was take early retirement so I can care for them.

Well said my friend. Depression and other mental illnesses are "real" illnesses just like physical health illnesses. If you're a diabetic, wouldn't you take your diabetic medication to have some quality of life? And yes, most medicines do come with side effects, but you weigh up the cost and benefits, like most things in life. Unfortunately because of the stigma still attached to mental illness and it's treatment, it still remains a misunderstood taboo subject

I've been on sertraline for years for stress and anxiety

I also get panic attacks, suddenly and for no reason

My sleeping is shit

My libido is shit

When I met my wife sex was awesome

Now we hardly have it and when I do get aroused usually end up a limp dick after a short while

This has taken a toll on our marriage

My wife is on them as well

I tried to come off them once,as advised by my gp but started being ill again

This year I've been slowly cutting down each month

This month, trying 50mg see what happens

I hope my sex life improves

Miss it

My experience with setraline is 💯 negative.. I wish I had not started on it and glad I got off .. but as some wiser heads have said .. it effects different people in different ways and may work for you but the side effects as well as the not helping my condition means I give of double thumbs down and can’t recommend or say anything good about the drug

Good luck to who ever is on this or you’re anti depressants … get well soon

Excellent advice, for years I thought I knew my causes, from my childhood mainly, but all the time the real causes were all around me. My job, but incredibly, my wife, her kids and family. I walked away from the lot and 3 years later I have a new job and home in a new town but unfortunately I will never trust a woman in a relationship again. No offence intended, this is my story. I’m still depressed because the divorce was horrific not to mention expensive, lost my mum suddenly at Xmas, 2023/24 was a bad time. Sertralin screwed with my memory then had venlafaxine but couldn’t take enough so now on Vencarm which is the slow release version of the above. I still get shit days when I don’t get out of bed, and I mean not even to pee or eat.

Exactly the same here with the sex. Solid as a rock and pumping away and then it just disappears. I can’t cum anymore. And the worst thing is, you have to explain this to the person that you’re just about to try and fuck rather than go limp and suffer the embarrassment.

"I've been on sertraline for years for stress and anxiety

I also get panic attacks, suddenly and for no reason

My sleeping is shit

My libido is shit

When I met my wife sex was awesome

Now we hardly have it and when I do get aroused usually end up a limp dick after a short while

This has taken a toll on our marriage

My wife is on them as well

I tried to come off them once,as advised by my gp but started being ill again

This year I've been slowly cutting down each month

This month, trying 50mg see what happens

I hope my sex life improves

Miss it

Exactly the same here with the sex. Solid as a rock and pumping away and then it just disappears. I can’t cum anymore. And the worst thing is, you have to explain this to the person that you’re just about to try and fuck rather than go limp and suffer the embarrassment. "

I also have had libido problems (and night sweats and insomnia) with sertraline— so much so I’ve reduced my dosage from 150mg a day to 100mg. I want to reduce it further to 50mg but the GP was clear that the dose has to be lowered incrementally.

In terms of other ways to counteract the side effects on sex, as well as viagra/cialis before intercourse, try taking 30mg of zinc and a vitamin B6 supplement each day. I’ve been doing so for two weeks now and I’ve already noticed a firmer, more engorged erection. Can get harder more quickly too.

That was a serious question. Viagra is a heart medication first and an ED treatment second, as that was one the side effects.

Tried mirtazapine and sertraline, both had unbearable side effects

Now on citalopram which isn't any better. Very low libido, no appetite, insomnia, when I do sleep I have bloody awful and confusing dreams - usually involving things going extremely wrong in a big way

I would hope all this should ease. I am now 6 weeks on sertraline and libido has returned, I am cumming quicker, but can still go over an hour! Weird dreams have eased, but I have always had weird dreams. Keep fighting you will get there.

I was fine until coming back from Ukraine on last stint as a frontline aid volunteer (wife was fine with me going there btw, and with BBC coming to house to film me packing med gear a few hours before I left on first trip March 2022).

Since then I've found out my son isn't mine, she became extremely hostile and narcissistic - projecting everything onto me, deprived (I've nicked) me of my share of a substantial (£400k+) inheritance, turned my friends and family against me and made homeless with the clothes on my back and £6 in my pocket. Maybe, just maybe, that's why I became sui.ci.dal and extremely depressed?

Depression is hugely underrated underdressed thing in my opinion I had two heart attacks my then girlfriend fucking my best friend behind my back and I was prescribed sertraline it has literally saved my life things got to the point I either was on the verge of crying or fighting nothing went smoothly for a good few years but since I've been on sertraline my head is in a good place. I'll be honest with every one of u though you need someone to talk to i have a couple of close friends who helped me as well

I was prescribed Sertraline for about 2 years and moved onto Escitilopram and have been on that for about 1 year. Side effects have been varied some minor and some pretty awful but they leveled out.

It's amazing how calm life is nowadays; give it time and things get better xx

Don't mean to be a conspiracy head. But you should look into the pharmaceutical trade and companies like Pfizer before taking any prescribed drugs you might change your mind the pharmaceutical trade is the biggest money earner for the powers that be so the more people on drugs more money they earn

Yes, one of the reasons why I’m decreasing my dose is because I feel too ‘flat’, emotionally. I mean, that’s its job— to level things out— but it’s just too much and clouds my ability to be appropriately empathetic.

Just started Sertraline and thought I’d do a search on the forum to see if anything else has been said about it. Surprised at how much has been said and there are loads of mixed experiences with it. Some encouraging and some quite scary. Only been on a few days but already feel ‘high’ / spaced out.

It’s been good to read other people’s experiences though as it’s all new to me.

I have recently been put on a low dose of sertraline for anxiety and depression whilst I wait for CBT with the local NHS Talking Therapies provider. I have been on it for a few weeks and I think it helps a little but its hard to tell as I have also been avoiding most of my stressors over the same period.

Actually I think the transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), lifestyle and diet changes are probably helping more.

Sertraline upset my stomach, but Citalopram worked well for me. I did need to go up to the maximum dose (40mg) though. It kept me safe from hurting myself during the final years I was trapped in my abusive marriage.

Now I'm coming off it. The last little bit is proving difficult - awful dizziness, nausea and hot sweats. But I'm down to 5mg a day now, nearly there!

Was prescribed it by GP when I was going through divorce. Took it for a fortnight, hated the taste in my mouth, we reached an amicable settlement, let her have the house and I took the pension. Problems solved. No more depression LOL.

I think I just needed a break from a hopeless marriage. Possibly there is something going on in your life that you need a break from. Talking therapy helped too and made me realise that going back was not an option. Never looked back since. I do realise I am lucky and do not have a propensity to depression.

Been using for 4 months now. It’s lowered my sex drive (to maybe normal levels), no issues with erections (quite the opposite) but I do struggle to ejaculate from anything except sex (and even then it can take up to an hour of fast hard pumping).

Pros out way the cons for me.

I put my biochemist cap on and looked into studies, found various things that had been tried and found to help. The cheapest and easiest to access being citrulline (as citrulline malate). It really did seem to help.

I ultimately lost my drivers licence for 2 years because I was driving and didn’t know where I was and also lost my partner of 15 years cause she couldn’t cope with me cause I was arguing with her thinking it was her making me lose my mind. From my knowledge of chemistry and in particular medicinal chemistry there definitely is a placebo effect for medication hence why they have placebo control groups in trials. I had a positive reaction to them when I first started them but it went after a month or two as the placebo effect wore off and I returned to my mental state before taking them

I can only speak for myself and I hated taking it. Taking away the not being able to cum part which was annoying but not everything.

It didn’t work for me at all I found cbd gummies worked for me. But that’s just me not saying it would work for everyone.

The kicker for me was I was still able to be hard as fuck but no cumming and I had no sex in the time could have made some women very happy lol.

Hope everyone finds what works best for them.

Antidepressants are a short-term solution. Cognitive therapy and counselling are important factors too.

The real truth is that most people suffer from depression, but it's masked by drink, drugs, gambling and on some level, this place. A lot of lonely folks are in need of company and intimacy to take away the pain of what it is to be human.

Then you probably don't understand what the placebo effect is!

There have been a huge amount of studies to show that it exists. It's probably the thing with the best evidence in all of medicine.

Chorley / Ormskirk. At the mo:

I've benefited from sertraline in the past, and others got shorter periods...

I am not a talker, so other support mechanisms are not good got me, I'm very much an introvert (INFJ aka the counsellor) - and do not open up easily, or often, especially not with strangers, and you can forget about group sessions - talk about my idea of hell!

I am, and have always been, an agony uncle to my friends, family, and colleagues, and have helped people through all sorts of troubling situations - to the extent that I did a counselling qualification years ago, for reassurance that I was handling things the right way...

I've lost my train of thought now and need to get up for work lol...

I agree, antidepressants are over-prescribed, and an easy option... But that doesn't mean they're not a good option, or the best option in a lot of cases...

Thankfully there's far less stigma attached to them nowadays, and it's more socially acceptable to open up and admit you're struggling...

It's okay to not be okay 🙏🏻

"Update on mine. I'm going to start being weened off Sertraline from next week as all they are doing now is making me SO numb. Not looking forward to this bit. They are then putting me on mertazapine see if they help. "

My son is finding this on sertraline, his emotions are non existent ,he can't find happiness in anything or even being upset and it is worse now that his dose has been increased.

I self diagnosed they were ( setraline) doing me more harm then good and came off and told doctor to her face why … my depression is now managed without medication and I can say I’m better off without the setraline …. Imo awful drug and glad I came off when I did as it would have taken over and destroyed my life …mental health is important as is listening to g p but listen to you body .. listen to you mind if you have too..

Good luck to anyone battling some demons … it can be done .. drugs may help some … in which case I’m pleased and glad for you … but if drugs don’t help … talk to gp and take down control back

Soz min rant and sermon there … good luck to everyone .. it’s not a nice place to be I know that

First time poster- I was on sertaline for about six months and in that time my anxiety and low mood have decreased dramatically and I’ve found a new lease on life. With this confidence boost, naturally I became more sexually active. Frustratingly, the meds made it near impossible to reach climax.

I eventually with the guidance of my doctor switched from sertraline to mirtazipine and not only is my wang as hard as a prosthetic leg & I can finish but I find myself enjoy sexual activity that much more.

(Also, I am sleeping like a rock now whereas before I was waking up in the middle of the night).

This is only MY experience though. Please work with your doctor or MH practitioner if you have one.

I also did 12 weeks of cognitive behavioural therapy through NHS talking therapies which really helped!

After many months of weaning down from 40mg, I'm now completely off Citalopram, after 5 years on it. Had a real challenge with the last bit, awful dizziness, nausea and hot sweats.

Still struggling with sleep a bit but then I'be also been really busy and having a joint pain flare.

I'm really happy to find that I don't need meds in my new life (I had to go on them as I was suicidal due to being a disabled person trapped in an abusive marriage).

Onwards! And best wishes to everyone dealing with this in any regard.

"Forgive me for saying, (only an opinion) I think anti depressants are being over prescribed. I understand they help people but I can't help think that doctors or other medical professionals just use them as the easy option.🤔 "

What's actually worse is they prescribe the cheapest first rather than the most effective and only move to the 'better' stuff eh the first option proves ineffective or counter-effective.

I place a large amount of blame on the collapse of my last serious relationship on the meds she was prescribed. Undoubtedly she needed medication. But the stuff they put her on (which iirc was sertraline). It might have leveled her massive mood swings out but also seemed to kill off any kind of positive emotions and affection towards me and brought out a really ugly, cold and calculating side of her personality. Thing is at the time it wasn't easy to identify the difference as it was a gradual thing over a few months, and it was only after things had gone irrevocably South and I'd had a year or so to reflect I realised the timeline matched up and nothing else had happened that would explain the profound personality shift. On a physical level it had a profound effect too, her body was no longer as sexually responsive, we went from an absolutely top tier sex life to, well one that was barely there and felt like a chore.

I have recently been prescribed sentraline and my goodness I have never been so exhausted, I use them as sleeping tablets, not sure if it is the side effects or my mind has quietened down for the first time in about 10 years and now it is time to sleep, but I struggle to stay awake

Because of the exhaustion my gp prescribed Citalopram but after just 3 days my mind was frantic, so straight back into sentraline, will put up with the exhaustion

Have been waiting for talking therapies for months and was told because I am a complex case the waiting list is even longer (make that make sense lol)

My personal opinion. Try therapy and self care, but recognise it doesn't always work.

I am alive because of sertraline. It takes the edge off the worst feelings (though its worse initially you have to be patient and give it 2 months) easy to say when youre desperate or dont see it as a real illness.

But therapy if you can afford it and definitely self care. Silly as it sounds a 3 minute cold shower every morning, a long walk or run. I cannot stress these things enough I promise from experience.

Anti-depressants are a short-term solution to take the edge off how you are feeling. Changes in lifestyle and thinking are also important as these can be at the root cause. I used to suffer from Depression and was on meds for a year. I now know what my triggers are to feeling low and can, for the most part, recognise if a spiral is commencing and then step away from the issue. I spent a year in therapy, which really helped. The thing is, you have to realise that being human is difficult. We are complex machines that need to be maintained correctly. A Ferrari will not run correctly if it's out of tune. Also, there is nothing wrong with feeling low. Mental illness is the last taboo for people to chat about. We will quite happily tell people we have cancer or need a bypass but we won't tell people we are feeling down in ourselves. There is no shame in feeling low. The big shame is not being able to chat about it.

Sertraline worked for me, although did gain some weight, the odd night of insomnia. Downside was sometimes stopped me achieving orgasm (blessing sometimes). The worst bit was trying to get off them, had horrible withdrawal so ended up back on and them weaned myself off over a longer period than Dr’s suggested. Citalopram didnt work for me, had split second black outs on that stuff

Setraline for me is one of those ones that send me off my rocker !! I can’t take ssri I can only take SNRI and it was me who discovered that not my doctors when I researched the ones that kept making my issues worse every time they wanted to wean me off one as I’d been on them too long thankfully they’ve kept me on venlafaxine now for the last 12 years and a wee mertazapine top up as on max legal dose so no where else to go

I've taken Setraline (100mg) ever since a horrendous event in my life.

I still like a healthy lifestyle, I train, eat a generally healthy diet, have a good support network, practice mindfulness and yoga and read a lot.

They definitely take the edge off. I've been told that I may be a bit too numb, but I'd rather be that way than feeling suicidal or hating everything.

I'm here for a good time, not a long time.

Having Bipolar, I'm not allowed to have antidepressants in case they trigger mania. Great news when you're in a low place, along with the Depression & Anxiety service not being available.

I've found that really adhering to a proper routine to get circadian rhythm working helps a lot with low mood. Set wake up and bed times and eating at the same time every day where possible. If you're struggling with Sertraline and other AD's, building in some circadian rhythm routine will help.

On a side note, my mother has been on Sertraline for years and it's been pretty effective. A recent low mood episode saw the dosage upped and she's very much back to herself, so it's certainly effective for some.

Sertraline user here and have been for over a decade.

Has numbed me in some aspects of life, in terms of reading situations I just breeze past them, which comes across as insensitive at times, yet I'm unaware that I've done it.

Also, sometimes makes climax an issue!

I’ve been prescribed Citalopram in the past and it really worked for me. I was on 20mg every morning, I was taken off it as I no longer needed it.

With antidepressant it’s trial and error it’s a case of seeing what works.

I agree. I was having trouble sleeping and my doctor instantly recommended prescribing antidepressants.

No way was I going to agree to that.

This might seem foolish, but try it. Go to a shop/garden centre and buy seeds to grow something (I know it's s bit early, but peas are good)

Plant it in a pot and watch it grow. You'd be surprised with the satisfaction that it can create for many individuals

Everyone is different. For me Setting a goal helps. There's a reason to get up. (More than just work or life) . Couch to 5k was fantastic for me. But if your fitter the same principle. And j cannot recommend enough a cold shower when you get to 3minutes. It's not nice, but it will liven you. And it gets easier.

I would agree to an extent. People need to change their lifestyle to help them selves. And recognise this earlier. Easier said than done, because people have life necessities (work, family, etc) . Or vices that dont help such as addiction. However I know without prescription drugs i would have been found on the rail track.

The thread Sertraline was so popular, and hopefully helpful, it'd be good to continue."

I was on Sertraline for over 10 years 200mg for service related PTSD. I came off in the summer because I got fed up with one of the side effects which is excessive sweating.

I learned however in the past couple of weeks that in some countries Sertraline is used off label as a chemical castration. I did Google confirm it and it seems it’s true.

It is not my understanding of how sertraline is used in the treatment of sex offenders.

In jurisdictions like the UK, Sweden, and parts of the US, clinicians may prescribe sertraline or fluoxetine (Prozac) to individuals convicted of sexual offenses or those with hypersexual disorders. The reasons are:

They help in targeting "Obsessive" Thoughts, Sertraline is highly effective at reducing intrusive or obsessive thoughts. In forensic psychiatry, it’s used to help patients stop obsessing over sexual fantasies, making them more receptive to therapy. This is considered a safety first approach before true chemical castration as these drugs (anti-androgens) can cause severe bone loss, metabolic changes, and heart issues. SSRIs are seen as a "softer," safer starting point. Sertaline along with other SSRIs do commonly cause delayed ejaculation and reduced libido as side effects, doctors "utilize" these side effects as the primary goal of the treatment.

Treatments like leuprorelin (a drug I know pretty well) and decapeptyl are far more practical at actual chemical castration as they only require an injection every 90 days and actually wipe out testosterone production almost entirely whilst sertraline doesn't significantly reduce testosterone and requires a daily dose meaning there is a much greater chance of dosages being missed.

Actually, no it didn’t. I have been on Viagra since before my PTSD diagnosis but that problem has been put down to the PTSD so that pre-dates the Sertraline.
