From the land of haribos.

I read an interesting article about how hidden hunger is common among with type 2 diabetics and how it could be linked to type 2 diabetes, what does it mean? Hidden hunger means that one is deficient of many micro nutrients, like minerals and vitamins, without without having a calorie deficit.

The symptoms of hidden hunger is that one always think of food, you have cravings, feel tired, difficult to concentrate and easily irritated.

There is also a new research that was published in bmj nutrition (british medical journal) 2025 which shows that most type 2 diabetics often suffer of micro nutrients, the research also shows that those who participated in it, in total 52501 participants exhibited "hidden hunger" and that the usual deficiencies was d vitamin, magnesium and vitamin b12.

They concluded by saying that to avoid it, is to eat a varied diet, like how those vitamins can be found in fish and eggs, you can get magnesium from legumes and nuts and d vitamin can you get from the sun.

What is your view about it and the research, do you agree that "hidden hunger" could be linked to type 2 diabetes? I think that there could be a link with it too.

I'm not informed enough to answer this but it seems sensible to me that eating a well balanced diet will *in most cases* be beneficial to health

Metformin, a common medication for this can cause magnesium depletion.

I asked my Diabetes nurse about whether it was worth taking Mg supplements.

No advice offered here or requested that I saw… you would however imagine NHS guidance would be of suitable quality… in my case identified as ‘pre diabetic’ the advice was poor at best. Similarly the stop vaping advice was based on ‘ you don’t know what’s in them’!

It’s sometimes good to sense check with others based on their experiences and knowledge whether on fab or Facebook!

My experience with the NHS was more positive. Personally I prefer science over opinion everytime. But everyone is entitled to choose their own path.

Have more than one blood test as I've had false spikes.

Check your urine.

Check your gut health too.

As both of these are intertwined with your diet.

Heartbur/reflux and a rumbling stomach can feel likeyou are still hungry.

Chase up various health charities and see where they get their research from. Joined up thinking is really important and stay away from people who can't hold a camera the right way around...horizontal.

Think with ultra processed foods there is a huge issue with malnutrition. Not that people haven’t got anything to eat, but that the nutritional values of a lot of food are so poor.

There are also so many other issues concerning the uptake of vitamin and minerals in our diet.

If you haven’t got good gut health, the ability for your body to absorb those vital vitamins and minerals is compromised.

Concerning cravings, I think a lot of that has to do with psychology and personality types. Though I have done sporting events where you feel like you body desperately needs fats and sugars.

Would be interested to read the research. Please cite it.

The old …. It’s the science … trope ! Questioning the ‘science’ afforded in some quarters is no bad thing …. You say you prefer it over opinion… the OP was merely talking about some different science.. a credible scientific study.

Back to your original comment .. if unsure about something why wouldn’t you discuss with a group of peers to assist your own understanding. The science you hold dear is evolving … maybe the OP and the research he’s read is the game changer when proven I’ll become current scientific knowledge too!

Thanks for your post OP .. something to consider

You can always ask for a blood test for Mg levels. Then you'll definitely know whether in range or not.

There’s the theory that a sugar rich diet favours absorption of sugar over vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, chromium and vitamin C. So it may be the sugar causing the deficiency.

Type two diabetes is completely reversible. It’s a metabolic disease. It’s because the food industry are despicable bastards keep us addicted to their products and rulers from the inside out.

If you get information from the likes of Diabetes UK, they call it going into remission.

Also, not everyone can put it into remission.

Yes and studies show it is possible for some people to reverse it through diet changes and weight loss and t2dm could be reversed as quickly as 1 week, but remission takes longer, it depends on the method one is using too

A lot of strain on the NHS is down to poor education and a lack of discipline.

They probaly right as diet does play a large part in our general health and even mental health but the trouble being is most of the good stuff you need for said varied diet is getting unaffordable for most ? and by the sounds of it another ticking time bomb in the the health of the UK ?
