"5 years since it started but when did it end ?

Is it back to being called the flu now ? "

No. It will never be the flu, as it's a completely different type of virus and very different effects.

5 years and people can still learn much. Thank goodness that experts have continued to learn much about it.

Neither of us caught / got it, despite one of us being a Respiratory Nurse and the other being highly vulnerable. Suspect taking measures to protect ourselves helped.

I don't believe I've ever had it. The intelligent steps to mitigate the effects of something that's potentially going to be more harmful, if you don't take them, is the smart thing to do, whatever the situation. I'd hope most sane people would seek to mitigate harm, for both themselves and others.

Like others, I don't believe I've had it. I've had one infection with symptoms, since March 2020. It tested negative for Covid.

It didn't fit in the pattern of the flu. How many people suffer from the flu in the summer? Hardly any. why did they with COVID? Because it's transmission rate was so high. why was it so high? Because it wasn't "flu rebranded"

I think the measures worked in fairness, just look at how the cold and flu rate dropped alone. I do think the vaccine was a little rushed, without the full consequences or side effects being known. On balance it probably did save a massive number of lives. Its hard to believe it was 5 years ago, it seems like the blink of an eye. The one thing I did like about the lockdowns was the slower pace of life.

Am I alone in looking back at that period and thinking what the actual fuck were we thinking? With some of the measures being enforced... Not being able to drive too far? Not being allowed to sit on a park bench? Eat out to help out?not being to have proper funeral services.. Some things that we did were a genuine stain on our country and straight from the department of healing crystals. And sadly my dear old mum still got it bless her.

The fact of the matter is our arrogance as a society we got well and truly caught with our pants down and the people we trusted to be ready for such things pretty much made it up as they went along, assuming that they could cope with it.

Personally I think they knew so little about the virus at the beginning all they could really do is plan for the worst and hope for the best, whilst far too many died or now have long term issues I think things could have been far far worse.

Was some of the stuff unnecessary? Yeah probably, but I'm sure lots of it was completely necessary.

But like I said our arrogance today dictates we don't like being told what to do now,we bitch and throw our toy's out of the pram end up putting more faith in some internet nutcase on a channel somewhere then actual scientists with the facts.

Combined with a government more interest in lining their own pockets and their friends pockets it was a perfect storm for a complete fiasco.

Well ivermectin is one of the safest drugs to exist, has been given out over 4 billion times and has less adverse effects than ibuprofen, yet we can’t get it over the counter here and you can look for yourself the propaganda surrounding that!

Former MP Andrew Bridgen has taken loads of evidence to the house of parliament to be mostly ignored and silenced!

Money and propaganda run media and politics while we are the pawns, the exact same reason we now have some of the most expensive energy in the world!

You trot that out as if taking a veterinary medicine, for infestations, must be a good thing.

And yet, following the widespread YouTube posts etc about dosing yourself, a poison response unit was overwhelmed by public catastrophes. Summarising one of their reports, six of the 21 persons were hospitalized for toxic effects from ivermectin use. People have died from its use. Not all chemicals and medicines are controlled because it's a better earner for Bigpharma not to have worming chemicals on the market.

It's not the best use of intensive care unit resources, especially when there may be overload, due to potentially fatal illnesses. Far better not to have people poisoning themselves with fairytale medicines that put them into intensive care.

Wonder drug for humans with:

Onchocerciasis, Strongyloidiasis, Ascariasis, cutaneous larva migrans, filariases, Gnathostomiasis and Trichuriasis, as well as for oral treatment of ectoparasitic infections, such as Pediculosis (lice infestation) and scabies (mite infestation)...

Just google it’s effects on viruses I’m more on about the propaganda surrounding around it at the time, when over 4 billion doses had been given to humans with very few adverse effects.

Also there are currently oncologists using along side with fluvoxamine to treat cancer which isn’t a parasite with amazing results according to certain sources, but that’s hearsay!

The doses, actually 3.7 billion, are those for the parasites, approval in 1987, and yes, well tolerated.

People use words interchangeably and the meaning of words change.

The world "Flu" has almost become a general way to describe a set of symptoms not just a specific infection such as influenza.

Just look at how hoover became a generic word for a vacuum cleaner.

Ivermectin is an approved drug for human use and is incredibly safe. Stop spreading miss information....

If you want to argue it's effectiveness at fighting COVID-19 fair enough, but to try and insinuate its just a veterian drug and its unsafe is totally unacceptable.

Poor analogy using brands vs generics when comparing viruses.

And people often use words incorrectly. Still, the influenza viruses do not include covid. Colds do not include flu viruses.

Me and Molly never got it (as far as we know) despite people living in our house having it twice.

Come on, it was basically flu. Simple as that, but we all went off our heads.

I look back now at all the ridiculous things we did like sanitising our shopping when we got it home, distancing, and having fucking traffic lights to get into Tesco FFS, and realise we were all played.

it wasn't ridiculous though and covid wasn't basically just flu.

Id happily have some of those measures back now... as it helped stop flu and other viruses as well as helping to stop the spread of covid.

I will still wear a mask if I'm feeling unwell and have to go somewhere public...

Im shocked how few places still have hand sanitizer available now...

Covid was a horrible illness and we lost so many... hopefully we can learn from it.

It's only just got to the start of the 5th anniversary, hence the subject and commemorations today, at the 2 memorial sites etc.

Come on, it was basically flu. Simple as that, but we all went off our heads.

I look back now at all the ridiculous things we did like sanitising our shopping when we got it home, distancing, and having fucking traffic lights to get into Tesco FFS, and realise we were all played.

"

It's wasn't just flu I nearly died from it and find comments like this insulting.

And please tell me how did we all get "played" what benefit to anyone in power for everyone having to queue at the supermarket?

It's purpose was to limit the amount of people in close contact at one time coz guess what this is how viruses spread!

Five years on and people are more selfish than ever, everything is about themselves.

This country is more divided than at any point in the last 100years .

And the fault lies squarely with the internet and it's ability to spread lies.

So really the biggest pandemic in history and is probably dangerous than any natural virus is the internet!

Interesting how much division and anger it still stirs in people. ‘The vanity of small differences’ appears to have been magnified even when it’s about people’s opinions and decisions on how they keep themselves safe and protect family/friends.

It's a good point. What we continue to see is "winter nhs crisis" and people. Moaning about the nhs. And yet even rudimentary hygiene measures seem beyond an increasing number of people. The divisions can't be doubted but what would be wonderful to see is some healing measures that we would all reap rewards from. We are a dirty country now in so many ways. Would be great to see some steps to improve that situation so that next time things don't spread quite so far and wide and fast.

People seem to get really angry about being asked to follow some basic measures.

I see the main cause of the division is lies, caused by the main stream media, everything they said and done was a contradiction, at one point you were racist to question weather the virus came from a lab. Now it’s plainly obvious and out in the open that it was developed in a lab payed for by the us tax payer by the nih, for gain of function research, also it created the biggest wealth transfer in human history!

There are numerous reasons that trust has fallen, the internet shone a light on the lies and also perpetuated more!

I hope we can heal but it has to come through honesty!

Which bit? Why did Biden preemptively pardon Dr Fauci for any crimes dating back to 2011 or 14? Just watch senator Rande Paul question him about the money they sent to the wuhan lab!

Why has the book the real dr Anthony Fauci never had a single court case against it? When you read the accusations against him and Bill Gates who was good friends with a certain Jeffrey Epstein! The breadcrumbs are all there you just have to take a little time to look!

I imagine everyone here is a minion. Not the cute yellow creatures but the plebs/proletariat/great unwashed/electorate. We cannot fight the rulers/owners/money bigwigs/cunting twats, so we have to play their game to survive. To survive threats of war, war, famine, cost of living crisis, pandemic, each other.

The each other bit we can control more than the others, by being kind, by thinking of what we can do not to make others suffer. That can mean hygiene, masks, 2metres... it's not a fucking lot!

I'm currently in a hospital bed and have been told that I have tested as covid positive. This was after being in totally unchecked wards since my unplanned admission from the cardiac clinic which I came to as a day patient last Tuesday. I got kept in and was in at least two busy medical wards before anyone thought of testing me late on Thursday. Until I then got moved to a private room, mask wearing wasn't on the agenda.

The infection control team in each trust updates the policy as and when for mask wearing.

It didn't fit in the pattern of the flu. How many people suffer from the flu in the summer? Hardly any. why did they with COVID? Because it's transmission rate was so high. why was it so high? Because it wasn't "flu rebranded"

If there has been greater levels of mask use, for example. The Covid test would only pick up on a Covid infection but better hygiene, distancing, mask use etc could prevent more infection types.

I didn’t queue at shops, I went in late at night when there was no queue.

I wasn’t ‘made’ to have a jab, I chose to take up the offer of one.

I didn’t stop going to work, not for a single day.

And I haven’t caught Covid.

No, I've the greatest respect and admiration for our NHS. It's tragic that so much of it has continued to be under-resourced for so long. It's especially difficult now that we've had months of high hospitalisation levels, fuelled partly by infections. The public has a part to play in containment and reduction in infection levels, for example by following some of the well-reaearched effective measures, such as mask wearing. I've seen people refusing to wear them in hospitals this winter, when I visited for an elderly relative who was admitted. Ultimately, the public are the key contributor to weakening the effectiveness of health service measures.

I honestly believe that it was a man made virus that came from a leak in the Wuhan Laboratory.

My theory is the Chinese Government tried to cover it up in a way similar to the way the Russians tried to do the same with Chernobyl which became a bigger problem than they thought it would be.

When you’re dealing with a virus that no one knows what the outcome will be from it especially from a totarian country like China, extreme measures have to be taken.

There’s so much our Governments don’t tell us, to save utter panic from the population as well as the massive economic consequences. The pathetic scenes of people hoarding food and buying a years supply of loo roll would have been nothing had the real truth been revealed at the beginning.

The back story laying blame on a wet market in Wuhan with the onus pointing at people eating bats just doesn’t add up, especially with a lab that spends its days developing cures and researching SARS viruses located in the same city is a bit of a coincidence don’t you think?

But then when have governments ever told the actual truth with global crisis such as this?

Certainly not from watching you tube. It was the "must learn to live with it" strategy. In other words, only PPE up when you know the patient has an infection.

Britain never really locked down, we became serial groups, moved from one bubble to another, taking infections with us. While there was an attempt to act on scientific grounds the government flapped in the breeze of public comment, opening restaurants, closing them, allowing Christmas then locking down.

The one success was the injections.

It was so good that some had some light relief, whilst so many of them were tragically exposed and harmed, for our benefit. A very responsible and educated post

can I remind you about the Spanish flu outbreak that caused between 25/39 million deaths possibly more.

Modern medical practices and hygiene plus lockdown protocols prevented COVID from being a disaster of this scale, so a couple of questions.

Why is that a bad thing?

Also and I've been asking this for five years and never had a decent response.

What would the governments of the world stand to gain by lockdowns and people following hygiene and safety practices??

Please educate me.

So you thought dancing was wrong? Afraid they did that during the time they were paid?

Do you realise how much frontline staff give (and disgustingly are expected to give) to the nhs? In that I mean all the work they (we) do that is not financially reimbursed? Do you want a list?

It was so good that some had some light relief, whilst so many of them were tragically exposed and harmed, for our benefit. They cared for us and many of them lost their lives and will also hold the trauma of seeing so many of the public struggle and die, as our systems barely managed. So grateful that some danced! that’s your opinion I have mine

So you thought dancing was wrong? Afraid they did that during the time they were paid?

Do you realise how much frontline staff give (and disgustingly are expected to give) to the nhs? In that I mean all the work they (we) do that is not financially reimbursed? Do you want a list?"

I know they danced when being payed that’s what makes it worse & why choose that job if it’s to much trouble for any of you no one makes you stay there

oh give over.. they danced for morale... do you have any idea how hard it was during covid times... you clearly dont have a clue what makes nurses or doctors do their jobs.

So what if they did some stuff to brighten up the world a little...

No you don't know it was during their contracted time. It might have been during their lunch break, or after they'd finished!

Is that in your trained medical opinion?

Once again the ignorance regards the effort COVID had/has on the system by some people is staggering.

It's been some time but let me try to explain it in a way you might understand.

When someone is shot the bullet itself isn't the cause of death it's the catastrophic effect it has on the body.

Think of COVID as a bullet.

COVID isn't the thing that actually kills them but it starts a cascade of effect's that ultimately and sadly cause death.

So whilst the actual cause of death maybe respiratory failure or heart failure.....

It only happened BECAUSE of covid.

The lack of respect and sympathy for people who died because of COVID is staggering, those people never chose to die, they never asked for COVID and the effort on family and friends is every bit as devastating as any other cause of death.

So perhaps you come out with flippant remarks based on conspiracy theories and mumbo jumbo you could show some respect for people who actually lost loved ones and those people who's lives has been changed forever due to the devastating effects it's had on them.

If you believe it's a hoax or not people died. FACT

It'd amazing some people still seem to be arguing if people died of or with it. My mum died of it or with it. The look of terror in her eyes will haunt me for ever. The torture she endured while fighting for every breath and the appalling way she was treated frankly couldn't give a fuck about the semantics of any wording on her death certificate. Without it she would not have died when she did and the horrific way she did. Some people seem to be unable to accept something exists simply because they have not personal experience. Probably more of an indictment of our education system that people choose to think that way. It's like arguing hiv doesn't exist.

I think covid deniers at best lack empathy

My mum died three years ago. She didn't have covid but had come into contact with it on a ward. During the last ten days of her life we were only allowed limited visiting, on the day she died my dad, my brother and I were allowed to be with her but we had to wear protective gear including masks and plastic aprons. The nurses told us to leave the gloves off because in the words of one of them " I'd want to hold my mum's hand".

I doubt these very compassionate people were doing this to continue a hoax or a scam, I can't imagine they'd all got together and hatched a plan to keep relatives away from sick and dying family.

If nothing like this happened to you or anyone you know you should be happy, if you think the people it did happen to were tricked or are lying to you, you should have a think about what you're implying.

The rules didn't make sense, a nurse or carer could come out of Asda and go to work and hold your moms hand. But the family couldn't, just make it make sense.

Hopefully the powers that be have learned from it all, but wont hold my breath.

It's about the limitation of risk. The fewer people that you come into contact with the lower the risk. That makes sense to me.

Lost two relatives three weeks apart after four were infected at the same time. This was just as the vaccination programme was starting.

One was elderly but otherwise healthy, 100% a covid death, didn't last 5 days in Hospital, I sat with her & my Mum in full PPE on a (fully occupied) covid ward as she died.

The other lasted three weeks, but his pre existing conditions couldn't cope with the damage covid wrought on his body, and died soon after being brought out of an induced coma without regaining consciousness.

I couldn't even hug my relative who lost parent & spouse at the first funeral.

I wonder if some writing on the Internet would be brave enough to repeat themselves to my face.

Bring it on! 💪🏻

Great idea, round up all the unvaxed and forcibly inject them , I'm sure it will end well . You could even jail everyone indefinitely until they complied.

Neither of us are medical professionals, we simply made our own decision not to take any vaccine.

5 years on were fine and we got through the pandemic unscathed.

All the best to anyone that took the vaccine/s.

And that's great for you. I can't remember what the numbers were but basically at your age the chances of getting symptoms or worse death were and probably still are very slim indeed, and the reduction from having a vaccine... I'm not sure it is significant. Actually just went to gov stats here... https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsbyvaccinationstatusengland

And the mortality rate for your age group with and without vaccination are compared. Very interesting to see.

Every year the elderly die in larger numbers during winter due to flu and cold outbreaks hence the signs in all nursing homes for decades asking you not to enter if you have cold or flu symptoms.
