Just started on sertraline and so far, I've had a few headaches, feeling very tired, a bit spaced out etc. Do these symptoms last the whole time, or will it mellow out over time?

Also, what was everyone else's experience with this medication?

You would be an incredibly lucky person not to have initial side effects with any anti depressant.

Read the info on the enclosed packet, this will tell you all about side effects (common to rare). Or look at the nhs website, it'll be more succinct.

The GP will want to monitor you over a period of time, so do attend the appointments.

Btw the side effects should settle down.

I had been on these a few time 150mg I really didn't like the way they made me feel very disconnected and I couldn't orgasm

Then the jolts and flashes started to happen

I've been on them many times before, the initial symptoms are difficult but try to focus on your feelings and mood, try to find your previous baseline of normal and measure yourself against that. It's a tricky one as sometimes the sertraline can essentially make you feel numb to everyone and everything around you, but stick with it, happy to talk anytime

Hi I’m actually a speciality emergency medic working in a&e and had experience working in primary care also. I did try privately messaging you but I’m out of your age range.

All medication similar to this carry side effects, and many of them make you feel worse before you feel better, indeed some cause patients to have suicidal thoughts not long after starting them, however you need to bear with them, they’ll take a few months to get used to and gain some benefit from them. We’re not 100% on how they fully work on some people and not on others, so we do often have to trial different ones before we find the right one for you. Keep your gp up to date with your progress. Hope they help and you feel an improvement soon xxx Dean

Long term usage can leave you having twitching, face and maybe other parts of the body which becomes uncontrollable. So must be doing some damage with the nerve system

I was advised many years ago that it's only supposed to be prescribed on a temporary basis

Antidepressants are often prescribed for generalised anxiety. Benzodiazepines can be prescribed very short term, but not for depression.

My son was prescribed them about 6 months ago . He has anxiety and depression. He is also autistic.

He finds he has side effects with some brands of the drug but not others. He's much better on them than without them but he's on a fairly low dose.

If you are concerned speak to your GP or pharmacist.

Best remedies for anxiety and depression is having someone who is willing to not only understand but willing to understand how they look at things in there position

Tablet just numb the pain and try and block the memory of why they are feeling it but talking is healthier and even getting the opportunity to speak to a complete stranger in similar circumstances helps bounce off each other

The side effects should settle down after a few days but obviously if they persist please speak to your GP. The only real side effect I had when I first started on them was yawning !

Had sertraline twice. First they worked. Second time I started to feel really empty and spaced out, no emotion at all at times, but I'm could fuck for hours lol. After a break for 18 months this my symptoms have deteriorated again and I am back on fluoxetine. The initial symptoms were awful, headaches and tired especially. These are easing though. Just tinnitus, that is works with my depression, that I had before, remains. Fingers crossed that goes soon.

I was prescribed them and started at half a 50mg tablet going up 50 every two weeks until I reach 100mg.

The first two weeks were great but as i increased the dose I felt like the medicine was going past my problem and taking me somewhere else if that makes any sense?

I made the decision myself to go back down to the initial 25mg dose and it works wonders for me - almost like micro-dosing - and I didn't bother to tell my gp cos a packet of 100mg tablets lasts me four months cos I cut them into 4.

On this dose for me the side effects are pretty much nonexistant.

I've been on sertraline and other SSRIs for over 20 years. The initial side effects should settle may be worth taking at night to begin with so effects aren't as strong.

As above it can be trial and error for which works for you but these I've been on longest with the most success and no side effects after initial few months. Though having had a break getting effects again this time.

I was on sertraline. Put on weight, no sex drive, headaches. Try 2 more drugs before I found one that worked. There are so many different types and you may need to try a few before you find the one for you.

The manufacturers call that "discontinuation side effects" I will sometimes give a sizable dose of fluoextine to cushion it but usually just taper the dose down.over months. The effects on orgasms is well known.and I.learnt it from a porn star!

It sounds like the medication has a short half life. Venlafaxine is the same.

Been on them since October, initially they caused quite rapid diarrhea after about 6-8 weeks it's settled down, been "trouble free" for a couple of weeks now, made a real difference to me, and my outlook in fairness, probably gonna stay on them for another 12 months or so, moving into my own place in the next few months (marriage breakdown) do feel a bit "wizzy" at times, which I like, and can be a bit frantic but with taking these and a few other things I've been doing I'm all good. I take them in the morning after breakfast as they can bring on insomnia, although I do wake about 4-5am each day but positives outweigh the negatives for me x

Antidepressants were a life raft to keep my head above water in the worst times.

However, the side effects from a number of different medications at different dosages, in conjunction with the physical manifestations of ill mental health are extensive.

Vivid nightmares, nocturnal bruxism (ended up breaking a tooth), sexual dysfunction, hemiplegic headaches, occipital neuralgia due to increase muscle tension and catatonic states, nausea, loss of appetite, altered concentration, poor memory, poor nail health, etc.

The list goes on and on.

Communicate any symptoms you have with your GP or mental health coordinator if you have one.

My meds were sertraline, Citalopram, metazapine, lorazepam, diazepam and quetiapine

One side effect I've found from taking any antidepressant is either lack of sex drive or the inability to climax. That is ok for a while as you can last for hours but does get tiresome and can affect your mental health even more.

Currently taking in the morning and get headaches and tiredness in the day. Thinking of taking it at and seeing if it helps. Only just over 2 weeks on Fluoxetine, so it may ease.

Been on them about a year now, all symptoms re meds dissipate after a short time, these aren’t great if you like a drink as they don’t agree with it

I found the a great help to be fair, nearly came off them at one point as I thought I was doing ok but decided to stick with them

It’s a widely prescribed drug now and there will always be pros and cons to any anti depressant but even if they act as a placebo and they help they are worth sticking with x "

"As an alternative, try lifestyle change.

Plenty of fresh air and exercise, eat well not crap food.

Only listen to comedy, never the news and laugh your tits off as often as you can.

Just a thought."

Mild depression can be quashed with positive strategies.

I've been on 50mg since October and after initially taking them at night, then realised they can cause insomnia, quickly changed to a morning after breakfast. I too had some emergency poo problems (not much notice....) which settled down after 3-4 weeks, occasionally it can still happen after a "fasting day" but been pretty good for over a month now. I feel a million % better which i think is a combination of several things, accepting my marriage was over, owning my own part in it (drifted apart) seeing a CBT therapist and going to a man's club each Monday where I just get shit off my chest, and more importantly out of my thoughts!! Spoke to the doc last week and I may look to come off them in August but also not rushing as hopefully I'll have moved into my new place and need to get used to my new life so may stay on until this time next year. They seem to work for me, but it's each to their own x

Speak to doctors and ask the best way to come off it they will probably lower your dose for a few weeks and again and so on.

If you just stop it may have very bad effects

Depression rarely exists in isolation:

life trauma

brain trauma

stress

ADHD and the related condtions

learning difficulties

low sex hormone levels

IBS

anti depression medication, known side effects for some people

insomnia

post natal

drug abuse

booze abuse

self medication

This list is not exhaustive, but untreated depression is exhausting

I was on this about 10 years ago - while it did relieve my ‘mood’, it does take both the highs and lows away, leaving me, as the guy above described ‘disconnected.

The ‘jolts and flashes’ are nasty and getting to orgasm a challenge. But, it may get you through a difficult period in life.

Just off Fluoxetine after 3 weeks. My anxiety is sky high on it and I am so irritable. Nearly had a panic attaco this morning over nothing. The headaches and tiredness were also effecting my work.

Going back to sertraline as less side effects. We'll see how they work this time.

You are one person. Your experience is valid to you and to some but not others.

With antidepressants a person may have to try different types in the same group, or different groups to find one that suits.

Agreed it effects everyone differently. I have just come off Fluoxetine as I was having near panic attacks and anxiety was higher than I have ever known. Tried for 3 weeks and side effects were getting worse for me.

I have just started on sertraline 50mg. Had it before and minimal side effects, except I felt vacant at time and my already low empathy was even lower 🤷‍♂️. Let's see what it brings this time.

It's important to understand that every person will have a different experience, and that there is no single "suits everyone" drug or dosage. This is true for the treatment of all illness types, but especially so for depression, anxiety and all other types of "thinking problems". The physiological effects of the drugs will vary from person to person, but also we all have different reasons for going onto these drugs in the first place.

For some people depression is caused totally by metabolic or genetic factors, it is clinical depression, and can sometimes be fixed really well by finding just the right drug or food supplement to compensate for a metabolic problem. For most of us though where drugs like SSRI's are prescribed, the depression or anxiety is rooted in life events or environmental conditions. The drugs can give us a bit of extra head space to cope, but there won't be any "cure" without addressing the reasons for the depression/anxiety. Which I know is usually very difficult, and sometimes impossible to fix 😥

Anyway, good luck OP, hope that the meds work well for you and that longer term the reasons for you needing them can be improved. Polly xx

Oooo I have one of them, ever wanted to use 2 😂

I agree though, I found with sertraline there was delayed ejaculation, which is good and bad. Never lost my sex drive though. When off them I was back to 'normal' and my partner at the time was grateful lol.

Setraline for me was great for what I needed it for but downside was my interest in sex went to zero and I could cum but there was zero feeling.

Lack of sleep was horrible but taking it at night worked. Makes you so drowsy in the morning too

Plus side was it corrected my overall mood

Coming off it I was ok and that first time I had cum after coming off it felt like the best orgasm ever like months and months of pent up all cumming at once

"The GP stated a particular antidepressant was gold standard?"

I had an appt with (supposedly) the practice MH nurse some years ago and she literally scoffed at my side effects and the phrase she used was “Gold standard”.

I’ve since discussed with GP and MH nurse (unsure if same one, by phone) and they were keen for me to try something else.

I’ve noticed the difference whilst tapering down.

In some

Ways I’m better but I don’t know where all these emotions have come from

I can certainly confirm it's cured my issues with cumming too quickly, but the flip side is, it's so difficult to cum now. Most I can manage is twice and that's in anything from 2-4 hours....not sure it's a negative as such, just means my chances of a quickie need a little more planning

I’ve been on 100mg for just over a year… started on 50mg.

I did have the same symptoms you mention at first but they settled down and It does work for me. I have been seeing the black dog again recently so may speak to gp about increasing dosage

Hope you are better soon and as I’m sure you know there are many in this place who can help and advise

Sending a hug x

I had sertraline 100mg, had to come of them in the end. I suggest you Google the side effects. I couldn't handle them if honest. My side effects were sensitive skin(felt like spiders crawling over my skin) - kept scratching, constant headaches, would cry without reason, punched a hole in the living room door for no reason.

Very powerful drug, take with caution as they can be addictive.

I was on them and I couldn't stop go to the toilet for the first week or so. Problems cumming is a side effect I think is mentioned on the label and I had that, apart from that it helped

They are certainly helping me too, so not looking to change until I've moved on and in etc...

"As an alternative, try lifestyle change.

Plenty of fresh air and exercise, eat well not crap food.

Only listen to comedy, never the news and laugh your tits off as often as you can.

Just a thought.

Mild depression can be quashed with positive strategies."

That is true my uncle went to see his doctor in 1970 and told him he was depressed, the doctor said get out the house and go walking a distraction obviously things have changed alot these days

Exercise, sleep hygiene, cbt, mental health referrals, and medication, all have their place in the treatment of depression. All depends on the severity.

"50 mg here. Early days for me. I have changed to taking it in the evening, but waking with headaches so may go back to mornings.

I'm on 50mg, started taking it at night but it caused me insomnia, so take it in the morning now. Although insomnia has kicked back in, but think that's down to issues with my new home purchase rather than the tablets...🤦‍♂️😤"

The thing is anti depressants are not a cure all. They allow you to cope and manage, but you also need to help yourself in other ways a s may also need counselling

I disagree with the medicalisation of mental health, especially with drugs that create dependency.

I know plenty of people will find it helpful, but I think that there are other approaches that work better

"I’ve been on sertraline for 5 months it does get better "

I’ve halved my dose over a month and I feel so much better. I’m back.

I needed it at the time, but I’d not realised how wooden and emotionless I’d become.

I’m weening myself all the way off.

I have had some withdrawal effects, worst being sudden attacks of vertigo/ dizziness/blackouts.

This wasn’t fun but things are improving and I suddenly have so much more energy.

Went on these for a month or 2 through my divorce, totally shafted my libido, couldn't orgasm and pretty sure it's caused long term issues climaxing for me. Recovery period is now hours rather than mins. Would not recommend.

Remember sertraline is not a cure all, drs seem to think it is.

Get sleep, get rest, look after your body and mind. Some days will be hard some will be easier that's normal.

I think it can be a helpful cushion but you need to work to get your head straight then get off it. It won’t “fix” you.

It nearly ruined my life because I couldn’t see how woolly-headed it was making me.

Not true any decent doctor will recommend counselling rather than medication to treat depression and anxiety.

I’ve been upped to 150mg of sertraline recently and it massively affects my sex drive and ability to orgasm. I had massive arguments with my previous gf about this when they first prescribed me it because she thought I didn’t fancy her. One of a number of paranoid dramas in our relationship unfortunately. 🙄.

I feel it really numbs me for a few weeks when they up it. I don’t have much experience with other alternatives to comment.

I am gonna stop taking mine tbh.

Show her this

https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/sertraline/side-effects-of-sertraline/

Long-term side effects

Some patients may get sexual side effects, such as problems getting an erection or a lower sex drive. In some cases these can continue even after stopping the medicine. Speak to your doctor if you are worried.

If you have diabetes, sertraline can affect your blood sugar levels. Your doctor may monitor you to check that you're on the right dose of diabetes medicine.

These are not all the side effects of sertraline. For a full list, see the leaflet inside your medicine packet.

It's a bloody minefield . Swapping one set of symptoms for another. Telling a doctor that the side effects are still there, years later is an uphill struggle. This I can vouch for. So don't be surprised if they don't believe you., as these are supposed to be healing pills not damaging pills.

"Don’t just stop. Taper down, but tell your gp what you’re doing and why. "

Ive been on 100mg for 3 years now, working shifts while being a carer for my wife and son it just got too much.

I’ve taken early retirement and have a few good things happening so with the lighter nights and spring in the air I’ve decided to start tapering off. Been halting my dose for two weeks now and it seems to be going ok. Had a couple of days where I felt I needed the full 100mg but not this week. Fingers crossed I get off them before too long.

Btw no real issues with them, delayed climax but not too bad, but I do get the runs if I forget to take them for a day and I had a very bad reaction when I tried to quit them altogether and couldn’t stop shaking

My libido is lower on it too but with peaks and troughs. We have to remember it will be lower due to depression as well. Last time is was on it I found mine returned after a few months. My FB can still make be cum, but only with her mouth!

My experience is that it totally chills you out and makes you “not give a shit” which can be good. But it also filled my sex drive considerably.

I stopped taking it about a year ago and I do still suffer with anxiety but prefer to cope with that than feel like I am “dulled down”. Also coming off it was awful and I had really frightening nightmares for months. It’s different for everyone though.

Sertraline can really screw up the gut biome and lock it even years later.

An imbalanced gut, can lead to IBS, GERD, heartburn bloating and trigger depression via the back door. Worst of all it can make the penile tip/glans numb to temperature. That's really bad.

I feel I learned a lot about myself during my period on setraline .. the main one for me was medicine wasn’t the answer .. it’s different for everyone I knew that’s why no judgement is ever made but I can only advise on my case…. For me .. talking.. cbt .. not being ashamed I was unwell was my route out .. in hindsight I should never have gone on medication but I was in a dark place and I went with doctors advice … half way thorough cbt I had courage to tell doctor I was coming off tabs and moving forward with other treatments… they advised not to … I went against it and 18 months down the line I’m glad I did BUT and it’s BIG BUT …. This was my route .. you need to find your own and it’s not an easy journey but the rewards are there if you can make iit…

Good luck to anyone who is in need of help and thanks to those around you who stand by your side to help ..

End of my Sunday sermon … best wishes to all

Glad you found your way through it.

Depression can have one trigger or multiple (with "the straw that broke the camel's back). It ranges from mild to severe. It may have a familial (gene) connection being predisposed to it - so what causes one person to spiral into depression, won't another (it is individual). It can be environmental, it can be recurring, and other things that haven't come to mind instantly.

Treatment has to be individual and needs a combination of therapy, meds, sleep hygiene, exercise, nutrition, finding strategies, acknowledging small progressions/improvements (getting out of bed, music, showering, comedy, reading, socialising - even here ).

Good luck everyone (heart)

Do you have regular reviews (at least yearly)? If you haven't had one in the last 12 months, go make an appointment with your GP.

I think it’s amazing people can talk so openly about their mental health.

It’s massively important though, to recognise that people’s experiences of their mental health episodes and medication are very specific to the individual.

It’s always good to hear from people’s experiences but make sure you speak with your health care professional before you try and change the amount / brand of medication..

Also, if anyone is struggling it’s always worth finding your local mental health crisis number and putting it in your phone. They are often a 24hr service and are staffed with mental health professionals, including psychiatrists and can help in a crisis or to prevent a crisis x

That statement is loaded and with that I have to stress you need a review. You may need a referral to a psychologist or psychiatrist. The latter can ensure the medication is appropriate. The former may help you with therapy. Good luck.

Btw don't go for an urgent appointment, go for one that has longer time. It may mean you have to wait X weeks.
