Random question but is anyone suffering with stuffed ears and people sound muffled?

I have tried allsorts to rectify this but it’s really pissing me off now

Any suggestions would be really helpful.

I’ve had a cough on and off for 9 weeks and had allsorts from docs but am now left with this fucking ear problem

Olive oil drops in to the ear. Softens the wax.

The olive oil is a top suggestion, that’s worked for me in the past.

Also try closing your mouth, holding your nose closed and breath down your nose. It’ll create a vacuum and (fingers crossed) you’ll feel your ears pop, hopefully that’ll help

I did mention I have tried allsorts guys

I’ve been and had my ears checked and no wax

I havve steamed every day….used nasal sprays every day….tipped upside down and held my nose to blow but no popping whatsoever

I’m told it will clear when it’s ready

Maybe I am being to impatient but just sick of this muffled sound all the time

Sorry for whinging xxx

Slightly warm olive oil, failing that I find the best solution is otex eardrops from the chemist, always worked for me . My ears used to block every three or four months.

I generally find that having a stuffy nose also meant that my hearing is a bit wooly too. I assume it's a pressure related thing.

If there's no wax or blockage in the outer ear, it could be mucus or fluid, and/or inflammation in the middle ear/ eustachian tube between ear, nose & mouth. I find antihistamines, hot compress on face/sinuses followed by Saline rinsing the nose helps.

Op be careful, you might have a reversed ear drum.... Be very gentle with it. This can be caused by many reason specially after a cold, sinuses infection.... Maybe go see an ear specialist

Yea but aren’t those suggestions for people with wax Luv

I was told not to put any fluids in at all in case it is already a fluid condition

I have troublesome sinus too and use saline rinse i got a neil med one and it does help sinuses so fingers crossed it will help the ear issue too. Empathise though its horrible. Good luck hope it clears up

Try using some Vicks vapour rub around the neck and behind the ear... And rub it in for a little bit, helps with circulation

(Healthcare worker here), obviously discuss with your pharmacist first, but this good advise, but a decongestant rather than an antihistamine may work more efficiently- (not suitable if on Blood Pressure medication)

I’ve had a cough for ages.. had dizzy spells every now and then too. Went to have my ears checked and ended up having microsuction wax removal as one ear was completely blocked and one was the best.

Seem to have come a down with another cold/cough since but hearing is spot on and feeling better for it.

Worth seeing if there’s anywhere near you that can do it / check. £60 ish for both seems to be the going rate.

I went for an ENT consultation recently because I’ve had this exact problem and it’s been getting worse.

He gave them a good clean said I had an ear infection caused by trapped water from swimming behind a load of wax. He said the air was completely filled with hard wax so he blasted it all out.

Couldn’t believe how loud everything became after having them cleaned

He also gave me a nasal spray to use daily he said it will keep my ears working properly and they said try and keep your weight the same losing or gaining weight can cause ear problems

I've had that problem in the past with colds and coughs affecting my hearing that won't go away.

Tried several ways to clear it too from a bit of heavy chewing to moving the jaw sideways to make it crackle, to one stream of water from the shower head to warm it up (thou it can be noisy) to sneezing trying to get it to flex a little and pop, but nine times out of ten it goes when it wants.

Hope it soon pops for you

I find “ear calm” spray helps. As it’s tailored for soothing infection rather than excess wax.

for some reason, my right ear is prone to wax build-up - I have no idea why, but suspect it's connected to an impacted wisdom tooth that was extracted years ago.

So, every year, I would trot down to the GP, he would give me drops to use for a week, and then call me back to have them syringed.

Pain in the backside being deaf for a week, so nowadays I syringe my own ears using a kit I bought off Amazon.

Apparently I'm doing it wrong, but it works for me so I don't care.

I've had this a few times in the past couple of yrs on the tail end of a virus, cleared itself up after a week or so. I found tilting my head backwards restored my hearing for a short while so must have been fluid resting against my ear drums or something.

Beware anti inflammatory medications if you have infection. The inflammation is your bodies way of fighting the infection, delivering heat and immune mechanisms in the blood. Anti inflammatory medications like ibrupofen and paracetamol switch off these defences and can be the cause of sepsis.

This is true, well proven, but not widely known.

Your GP may not even know it yet.

You can self refer to ENT. It was worth it in my case saved a lot of faffing around, the ENT consultant can do audiology, clear wax from your ears prescribed strong nasal sprays, advise you how to equalise the pressure, tell you the pros and cons of installing grommets all in a 15 minute appointment for less than £200

This works better if you use someone else’s finger to plug up.

Don’t use a butt plug though as the potential misfire could rocket that thing out if there and cause someone in the line of fire a mischief!!

Hope it clears up for you though..

Paracetamol is antipyrexial.

The idea is that these meds allow the body's natural inflammatory reaction without going overboard.

Streuth, I thought it was just me that had this bastard thing going on, sinuses are stuffed, coughing up phlegm, nose bunged, then my ears went and got bunged up to.

I used otex about 4 times a day, and also mental Chrystal’s, and radox eucalyptus

I also have one of those ear camera pen things, I used that to scoop out a LOT of wax, don’t get me wrong here…I do clean my ears regularly and never had an issue with them before.

But this past week has been absolute torture.

Got an appointment for doctors today, I think it’s a chest infection I have, still no sign of the bugger leaving me after almost 2 weeks

Let me know how you manage to fix your ear issues

Could be a number of issues

Possibly wax build up

Possibly infection

Infection could be inner or outer ear. Inner ear infections can often be misdiagnosed as outer ones as you symptoms are similar

I had blocked ear twice months ago that was misdiagnosed for nine months at an outer ear problem. Strong course of antibiotics eventually fixed it

If your current problem persists, see chemist first, then doctor and make sure they have a good look at inner and otter ear

I suffer with inner ear infections and sinus issues - my goto is to take the proper Pseudoephedrine decongestants - it will open up sinus / canals. Ask your pharmacist for it.

Don’t bother with any decongestants which have phenylephrine - it’s been proven no better than a placebo.
