"They have confirmed that a cat has passed on Covid to a human

Cats can have a form of Covid for which they have boosters for, it’s nothing mew, however they can’t give it to people. Back in 2020, it was suggested that if a cat owner, caught Covid they kept the cat in for the same amount of time they were in isolation, because apparently they could carry it on their fur & pass it on if someone were to pet them, but this is unproven.

"FFS some people will believe anything. "

What's not to believe. Highly likely a virus that seems to affect and transmit in mammals can cross infect.

Nothing new, nothing alarming.

Cows, goats, ferrets, mink, cats, dogs, deer, gorillas, monkeys, snow leopards, tigers and many others have all been found with infection. If you've caught it, you can spread it, this is the same rule for any living creature capable of hosting it.

Higher risk of mutation but nothing unexpected.

Tiddles is safe (for now). Many cats and dogs, sadly were put out of homes at the beginning in fear.

Risk is there, but tiny compared to nipping to the shops..

"You really believe this BS! "

What's BS?

Highly likely another animal such as a dog or cat can catch COVID from an infected person and by the same logic, a person from an infected animal.

Kept my two cats away from my daughter while she had COVID as a precaution as its very simple biology as it appears to be that COVID isn't really fussy about the host it infects.

That's any creature with ACE2 receptors in its cell make up.

Bats, pangolin, mink, tigers, gorillas, leopards and humans etc, so why not cats and dogs?

SARS-CoV-2 in cats, dogs, ferrets, and minks: The ACE2 receptor connection:

A recent review1 published in the journal Viruses, researchers discussed the potential risks of animal-to-human and human-to-animal transmission of SARS-CoV-2—the virus causing COVID-19 in humans. The researchers focused on cats, dogs, ferrets, and farm minks.

SARS-CoV-2 uses the ACE2 receptor for the virus to enter its host. Twenty-four amino acid residues in human ACE2 are required to bind to SARS-CoV-2’s spike protein. A species with similar amino acid residues would be a susceptible host. Dogs’ and cats’ ACE2 has greater than 50% similarity to human ACE2.1

Cats are more sensitive to SARS-CoV-2 than dogs. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 126 outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 reported in cats (67 in the United States)1 and only a few cases in dogs. These animals likely contracted COVID-19 from their infected owners, and subsequently developed respiratory symptoms. Of serum samples collected from cats, 14.7% contained SARS-CoV-2, and of those 10.8% contained viral neutralizing antibodies.1 Only 3.3% of 919 dogs had SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibody titers.1 The data shows that it is possible, but not likely, for dogs and cats to acquire COVID from their owners.

Ferrets are highly susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 both naturally and experimentally. SARS-CoV-2 antibodies remained at detectable levels for more than 129 days after the first detection of antibodies.1 Researchers tested lopinavir-ritonavir, hydroxychloroquine sulfate, and emtricitabine-tenofovir as antivirals for COVID in ferrets. Only emtricitabine-tenofovir lowered the virus titers in ferrets.1 Lipoprotein fusion inhibitors were also used in ferrets to completely block transmission.

On what basis do you disparage interdisciplinary cooperation?

Yup, there are articles on Science Direct about it...

Top results was "The contribution of veterinary public health to the management of the COVID-19 pandemic from a One Health perspective"

We have had so many livestock based pandemics over history not surprising Vets may know something.

"It's all over the scientific journals although Tom has his reservations about these science types also.. "

Why bother reading the science journals then?

Why do you speak in the third party? "

No no, it's Boris who went to the third party. And the fourth, fifth, sixth...

I'm not sure that Tom ever gets invited to the parties, it's too dangerous with those bloody sharks that follow him around.

What's more dangerous? Sharks, snakes, spiders, or Tories?

If you draw a venn diagram of sharks, spiders, snakes and general sliminess, it's the tory party that occupies the overlap between them all.

Maybe sharks do too. Ripping people to pieces and giving them Covid.

I'll accept that as with Covid not of Covid

"It's all over the news

Oh no it isn’t………. It’s behind you…."

What's behind me...

The cat, the news, covid.

I'm totally confused....but I should, like my old teacher said "read the question in full, twice, before attempting an answer".

Maybe I should read these threads from beginning to end before posting.

Then again, I have a life and most times just glance during breaks at work, so really can't be arsed.

If a cat dies 9 times from Covid does that count as one death or 9 on the stats?
