20 million deaths prevented by vaccines in the 1st year

A study (Watson, et al) published this month has found that 20 million deaths were prevented by the Covid vaccines in their 1st year of use. . (19.8 million) Any of us who had been vaccinated could have been 1 of those 20 million. It's great to see such news, especially when there are still scare stories that spout from the taps of those who are naysayers, etc.

Richer countries did better, due to earlier and larger vaccine access levels.

You've done some data modelling and analysis, then published it? More credible? I'll take a look, as it's healthy to be open-minded, isn't it?

Is it peer reviewed?

Have these facts been taken into account?:

1. How many people in the world/UK (whatever this study was studying) have already had asymptomatic covid and had anti bodies. To find out this information every single person who never tested positive and never had any symptoms would have had to take an antibody test. As far as I know those tests were only available to purchase privately at a hefty price of £60.

2. How many people out of all vaccinated people have been infected within the time frame of when the vaccine is effective: between 14 days and 3 months after vaccination. If they haven't been infected within that window or at all - they don't fall into the count.

3. Has anyone compared the percentage of non vaccinated people who only had mild symptoms and taken that percentage out of the count of vaccinated people?

i.e. out of 100 unvaccinated people 50 had mild symptoms versus out of 100 vaccinated people 60 only had mild symptoms. That would mean vaccine only helped extra 10% of people to get a milder case. (Numbers are completely made up to give an example).

4. Has anyone compared vaccinated & unvaccinated people's who are classed as vulnerable lifestyles? I.e. person who works from home, only goes out to public social places 1/2 times a year is statistically less likely to get infected versus a person who deals with 100+ people, handles cash and loves socialising every other weekend.

It is great to reduce any kind of suffering and/or death.

It is great to see people celebrate feeling safer and having good health.

I'm just not convinced by throwing out random large numbers without all bases covered... feels more like virtue signaling than anything else.

We are still waiting on a single study to tell us how many people have been "saved" versus how many were "damaged" due to lockdowns.

20 million? Are you sure?

Now we have to find another way to kill that 20 million because those numbers are just unsustainable with the current food crisis.

We can start with the French, they're wines crap anymore.

Global impact of the first year of COVID-19 vaccination: a mathematical modelling study

I am for the vaccines but wouldn't just advocate them to doubters, I would urge them to do their own research on the various vaccines available and make an informed decision as to which one (if any) is suitable for their individual health needs.

Indeed. How do we measure the effect on global health?

I think "doing our own research" is vastly overrated. For most people it means employing motivated reasoning to seek things that confirm what they already think. (I have significant training in interdisciplinary academic research, not in science or medicine. I'm very much aware of people's pitfalls)

I don't think the virus forum is a place to convince anyone, though, I think it's just a thunderdome.

I am simply not a fan of modelling/use of algorithms. Research is undertaken all the time. There will be vast opportunities to measure the effects of vaccinations longitudinally - all it takes is time.

Btw I'm not here to convince anyone, however, IRL I do have to provide information or signpost to info, so that others may make an informed decision.

Obviously there are numerous research methods that have benefits and drawbacks.

Providing information is worthwhile, however information literacy in the general population is extremely low, and we see the results of this not just in public health, but in all sorts of areas where the loud and charismatic prey upon the arrogant but intellectually vulnerable.

Guess who funds the Watson institute. Strangly it is companies involved in the manufacture of the vaccine and rich people who own shares in those companies.

These same universities stated if we didnt lock down at the start of the pandemic then the world would end. None of their research is to be trusted.

Also sensoring of info does happen. It does on here. Several posts have just been removed when people have posted irrefutable facts because the moderators don't agree or the facts have been checked by fact checkers that are paid by the vaccine manufacturers.

Sterilising imminuity, which provides 100% immunity against a virus, is rare in vaccines.

It's not a first at all. Flu vaccines reduce illness by 40%-60% depending on the flue strain. Yet we still use them because they still provide protection.

There are many studies (see I can do that too) which show the covid vaccines reduce severity of the illness, reduce hospitalisation, and reduce transmission due to infection.

I like this response to the "sheeple" and "wake up" brigade...

“Sheeple” shouts the person who accepts without question the many far-fetched and unsubstantiated narratives, based on “experts” who have no real understanding, background or training in that arena, snake oil salesmen, charlatans, those who are unable to understand data or statistics, and those who use out of context comments and statements to support their own ill-informed bias.

“Wake up” says the person who quite clearly slept through every single science class they had in school, who now promotes crackpot conspiracy theories. The “Wake up” irony is strong.

Well said. I truly believe there are paid agents on here just the same as all other social media.

Event 201 stated that they would have to plant agents to thwart the anti vax narrative.

This is all about money and control. They don't give a fuck about public health.

Well said. I truly believe there are paid agents on here just the same as all other social media.

Event 201 stated that they would have to plant agents to thwart the anti vax narrative.

This is all about money and control. They don't give a fuck about public health. "

"Utter utter bullshit

Totally agree

Just another random number plucked from thin air to make the vaccinated feel all virtuous and happy inside

This is a very common theme among anti vaxxers. They think everyone is only doing something to be morally superior.

All I see on here are anti vaxxers saying they are 'pure', 'woke' and people who are vaccinated are 'sheep'.

Quite the opposite I'd say.

Winston

Virtue signalling cries the person who boasts about their fantastic health, exercise, immune system, and how they're so much cleverer than everyone else, and they alone will defend democracy and freedom.

*Shrug*"

The science classes at school ? Were they teaching autoimmunity? Chemical warfare? Scientific data analysis? Vaccines and NON VACCINES? .. wow, clearly I was asleep during those.. Good job I am now a well educated and life skilled adult free to investigate and come to my own factual conclusions.. phew, lucky me !

Wacky ?... hmmm.. so crazy?.. almost every scientist and inventory in history has been labelled those words by those who cannot see past their own beliefs .. we would still be knuckle dragging if it was not for forward thinking humans, brave enough to question a narrative thought 'crazy by the consensus!

Lol... I despair sometimes.. and also pity

I know this is a pointless question, but do you realise the difference between somehow who goes against the scientific consensus of the day (eg Galileo, Darwin) and has the evidence to back their claims up, and somehow who goes against the consensus and has ranty, rambly YouTube videos to back them up?

While they laughed at Galileo, they also laughed at Bozo the clown.

claps* .. yet some cannot distinguish between the 2 .. not really a point there.. but feel free to keep laughing at whoever you wish and leave those who wish an open mind to discover what others choose not to see..or cannot

I'm not aware of any way in which I'd stop anyone from believing whatever they like? I wasn't aware I had that much power

Or is this the usual "I can say what I like, but if others disagree with me, they're persecuting me?" Afraid freedom of speech applies both ways "

Oh it does.. which is why I do not resort to getting fellow debaters banned on forums.. i allow banter and opinions whether they differ from mine or not...works both ways

The deaths, and contributory effects to death which will be attributed to the over reaction of the virus will forever outweigh any positive effect the supposed vaccine.

Context is everything.

1. Not yet peer reviewed. 2. Is comparing ONE vaccine against those who already have had covid. And I quote:

People who received both doses of the Pfizer vaccine in January or February 2021 were 13 times more likely to get a breakthrough infection with the delta variant than unvaccinated people who had COVID-19 during the same period were to be reinfected.

"A study (Watson, et al) published this month has found that 20 million deaths were prevented by the Covid vaccines in their 1st year of use. . (19.8 million) Any of us who had been vaccinated could have been 1 of those 20 million. It's great to see such news, especially when there are still scare stories that spout from the taps of those who are naysayers, etc.

Richer countries did better, due to earlier and larger vaccine access levels.

They sold something that doesn't work and fund the authorities that regulte them amd the organisations that draw up false stats. We are all being lied to over and over again and this is being pushed by America and the power of the dollar.

People don't need to wake up everyone can see we are being treated as pawns. They just need to search out news that hasn't been sensored.

On reflecting on personal experience those close to me that have been vaccinated have all suffered badly with covid and other worrying conditions including heart attacks, myocarditis, shingles, serious lack of energy, muscle pains.

When 2 of them ended up in hospital they were told it was anxiety caused by the vaccine. 1 ended up with a pace maker.

This pandemic has been fantastic for the privileged few. The job of a government is to take money off the public and pass it to corporations and billionaires and they have been doing a brilliant job of it.

When the depression hits which it surely will everyone will be blaming Putin while the fat cats are laughing all the way to their gold reserves and we will be queuing 100 deep to buy a loaf of bread with £500 notes.

Its the bigger picture that is most important and everyone is caught up in petty arguments and being distracted from the real danger here.

We could be 6 months away from SriLanka.

Peace and love to you all

That's just not true.

Here is measles for example.

'The MMR vaccine is very safe and effective. Two doses of MMR vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles; one dose is about 93% effective.'

The cdc and all the relevant health agencies originally said the covid shots would prevent infection and transmission. They did neither. It was a colossal failure. Triple or quadruple vaxxed and people were still getting covid.

"Is it peer reviewed?

Exactly, it's comparing likelihood of a vaccinated person getting a breakthrough infection of the delta strain, vs someone who has previously been infected with delta and has some natural immunity from a previous infection.

Of course, someone with natural immunity against the delta strain will have less chance of breakthrough infection as the current vaccines do not target delta (though still more effective than no vaccine). Natural immunity wades quickly however.

What the study does NOT say is that the vaccine makes you more likely to catch covid.

I can't believe some on here lack basic reading comprehension skills.

The single fact that vaccinated people can still catch covid , means that it is not a vaccine . A vaccine immunises you against infection . These mRNA injections don’t do that . They do a few other things which I’m not going into , you’ll find out soon enough

Everyone is free to believe what they want. Why is it a threat which demands belittling, bullying etc. if someone thinks differently? Personally, I think there's enough evidence to show the earth is a globe but I accept there are those who think it's flat. And quite often innovation is ahead of the studies to categorically validate the innovation. Until then, people will hold differing views and hypotheses ... and even when the science if there, there'll be some who just choose to ignore it and trust their own fallible instincts. And then there are those who enjoy conspiracies. It's a wonderful world ...

Missus

The first intelectually coherent response I have seen. You are to be congratulated Missus."

I believe the vaccines saved the lives of people who caught covid with underlying health issues, by lessoning the symptoms. However, predictions in terms of numbers saved from death, doesn't really help, in fact judging by this thread it has caused a rift, yet again.

I get there will be modelling, science and all sorts of wonderful things that fed into the report, but if we have such misunderstanding on the efficacy of the vaccines, surely it would be understood that a prediction is going to go down badly.

Many people weren’t vaccinated in the first 12 months. I’m not sure how you even measure 20

Million survivors when many with covid were not reported.

Polio and tuberculosis vaccines have been extremely effective in almost eradicating them. The covid vaccine lasts for a few months and then you need a booster. It must be one of the least effective vaccines produced. Wonder how much these companies are making from it.

Impossible to successfuly know. We should know not to believe inflated numbers by now. It will be high but there are other things to consider as well as if any person dies from it then it is a failure. Nobody should be expendable.

"least effective vaccines produced"

And yet the many vaccines were developed and produced by the billions, in less than a year, with tens of millions of lives saved, many millions more got milder infections, instead of more greatly severe.

Not to mention that countries managed to reopen more quickly, health services were spared the significantly greater overloads that they would have had, etc.

When something is urgent, there's a crisis etc, moving with the best that's available is wiser than letting life go down the pan for more.

Wake up....

The Evidence is all over YouTube, you can watch literally dozens of videos of "experts" demonstrating Pseudo science and telling you unsubstantiated numbers without any mention of where those numbers were sourced.

Ultimately though, it's well known that everything is Bill Gates's fault.

Unless you have access to a parallel universe there’s no proof that the vaccinated were more or less sick than they could have been, ever single person I know that is unvaccinated gar covid once, yet all the people in know that have been vaccinated have had covid multiple times, could be a coincidence could be that the vaccine destroyed natural immunity

How many of us here are qualified to even understand a report like this and question the hypothesis of experts in their field? Very few if any I imagine, including myself. That's why reports such as these are peer reviewed and understood by similar experts that it is based on modelled data. I would also imaging that there is some account for variation and bias.

What is dangerous is when people form very emotional opinions based off anecdotal evidence (my mate down the pub said his mum had a jab etc) and intentionally misinformed opinions of those with an agenda i.e. drinking bleach when Trump suggested it might work!

I agree that of course people are free to have an opinion, but not all opinions are of equal value.

French wine has given me complete protection from everything

As for the nay sayers

Carry on naying and barking up trees and getting the spirit level out to prove the earth is flat

ONE DAY you will be so bloody thankful to the scientists who worked their asses off to develop vaccines maybe not just covid but whatever comes next

You will look back and think

A) what a bloody fool I was to doubt them

B) god I was an ass

I just read Watson et al. (2022). First, it's a peer-reviewed ISI paper published in the Lancet, possibly the international standard for medical research journals.

Second, the modelling approach is sound, to summarise simply, they fitted a model of virus propagation with vaccine delivery built-in, to match known covid deaths, then ran the fitted model with the vaccine delivery switched off (no vaccine). The difference is the estimated number of lives saved. Very common and proved way of using modelling to investigate the effect of something (here the effdct of vaccinating). Even if your model is a bit off, eg the modelled number of covid deaths is off by 2 millions, the estimates with and without vaccine are more likely than not to be off by similar amounts thus giving a believable difference.

To address the known issue of differing reporting of covid deaths worlwide, they did one model using official Covid deaths, giving a 15 millions estimated lives saved, and one using all-cause excess deaths, giving 20 millions lives saved.

Now, you can indeed "do your own research", start by doing a PhD and feel free to publish in peer-reviewed journal.

And that’s exactly why , it’s just met with sarcasm and derision . Let’s put it this way , all of these injections were given under emergency authorisation use . Which means there is no health and safety data to fall back on . Whoever has taken them , is part of an experiment . In 5 years we will have the data to say whether they’re safe or not .

I agree that the testing period has not been subject to the same as most clinical trials, and that is not a preferable scenario, but research supports that it has prevented serious complications and death in a lot of people that would have otherwise suffered these immediate effects.

You can make numbers mean anything that you want them to. It will depend on the data source, the size of the pool you are studying, and as importantly the question that you are trying to answer. If you start be saying 'how many lives has the vaccine saved' then you will get to a number. If nothing else than to prove that your own personal view is correct.

Let's keep it simple. Since vaccinations have the hospitals seen a reduced number of seriously ill patients with covid? If the answer is yes, then it is (probably) working and worth doing.

Of course it could also be natural immunity strengthening, or the strength of covid reducing.

At the end of the day, IMHO you should have the vaccine. Do all these anti vaccers not use paracetamol, or cough medicine, or indeed eat any packaged foods because they don't know whats in them and therefore they may be harmed by them?

Some of the utter rubbish on this post, no the vaccine does not prevent the disease it "tones it down" thus considerably decreasing the life limiting effects and high level of hospitalisation. The decreased level of hospitalisation has a positive knock on effect that we can get back to treating the vast back log of serious health conditions. Trust me doubters and flat earth supporters, this vaccine has saved millions of lives, 20 million I really can not say, however millions have been saved trust me, I feel real pity with people that do come up with some of the crazy and downright dangerous conspiracy theory s out there but I get it that this will always occur, education and research people it's quite useful.

I sincerely hope you're right... Though hope does nothing when you can see what's happened, what's happening and what's yet to come.

Oh? Do tell how you know what's coming. Lol

It's ok, there's no point trying to explain it all in a post on a thread buried in a swinger website forum. I'll just say that I severally recommend you watch a few of Russel brands videos about it all on his YouTube channel... Yes the legacy media have now 'branded' him a conspiracy theorist, but if you have any critical thoughts left, that should tell you he's on the mark. "

Russell Brand is your source?

I really don't care if it's David Attenborough tbh, or pick anyone you believe to be super credible.

"If you're capable of independent thinking you'll agree with this person".

Umm. No. That's not how anything works unless you're a blind follower who doesn't understand what critical thinking means.

So if I don't agree with him I don't have any critical capacity?

Lol. That just sounds like thinly veiled "become a disciple of my particular brand of belief". Or, if I don't become your style of sheep, I'm not really able to think for myself? Lol"

Yeh no, that's not what I said. Your rush to mock and claim another's opinion as invalid through sarcasm etc indicates you're inability to listen and think critically to the discussion.

Once again that's really not what I said, you are changing my words to fit your bias so you don't have to think about another pov, thus limiting your thinking.

Again, I'll treat your perspective with the seriousness I believe it deserves. There is certainly much to be examined about public health responses, community upset, and long term sequelae, and I'm doing so.

Thank you for your concern about my world view, but I'm all good, thanks

Your previous replies indicate you don't have seriousness for it, and are taking personally when really ought not to. But yeh, bacon sarnie and coffee awaits me.

Enjoy.

I'm sorry you mistake agreement with your position as seriousness. Unfortunately the lockdowns are icky hypothesis (with or without vaccine holocaust and/or "the people who died deserve it and their deaths are less valuable than my hurt fee fees and/or ooga booga China) rather makes "Mummy I did a poppy in my potty" look like a doctoral dissertation. (Or it's about as clever as the member of the UKHSA who made the assertion that Covid induced paediatric hepatitis was one in 100k. At that point a few weeks ago, that would have put the number of kids in the UK at 24 million )

But as I've said numerous times, we shall see.
