Monkeypox cases are being reported in the UK after travellers from Nigeria brought it here. Not sure how serious it is but it's all over the news....

They said that about Covid.. "

From the moment they detected Covid in China it was always going to be an issue, people just didn’t want to believe it. They didn’t say that Covid was low risk of spreading to the wider population.

Anyway .. “Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that does not spread easily between people. It is usually a mild self-limiting illness and most people recover within a few weeks. However, severe illness can occur in some individuals.”

I think that is probably like many viral infections. Let’s not worry just yet Tom, we can schedule the panic in for next week

Monkey pox is rare and wasn't the unknown entity COVID was. Lasts seven to ten days, usually non fatal. What fatalities that there have been are in the young. Fatalities in the young can be 1 to 10%.

German Measles is so called not because it originated from Germany, but because in the latter part of the 19th century when the disease was closely studied by German physicians

“Chicken” pox, originally came from the cowpox virus, and not from chickens at all.

Cows would develop blisters on their udders, milk maids touched the udders of infected cows and consequently developed the signature pustules on their hands.

It can also present itself more than once in a child, one of my older sisters had it 3 times. It only presents in adults as ‘shingles’ if they have already had it as chickenpox as a child.

Chickenpox virus is varicella zoster, completely different to the pox viruses (which include cowpox). Chickenpox is closely related to human herpesvirus.

Once you've had chickenpox, you never get rid of it. It remains dormant in the dorsal ganglions of nerve cells and can reactivate at any time. You don't catch it twice but it may cause symptoms more than once, like other herpesvirsuses do. In adults, flare ups present differently to children and we call it shingles. It's the childhood chickenpox infection reactivating (unless the adult has never had chickenpox before).

"Two more cases confirmed.. what's going on here guys..

Errr transmittable maybe?

The authorities are flummoxed because Monkey pox is actually not very transmittable. The 2 people that have been confirmed today have had absolutely no connection whatsoever to the other confirmed case.

Awesome word. Love a bit of flummoxed

It's a good word that is underused in my opinion.

Tom hopes the authorities get to get a grip on this..

Be egore it gets out of control

Get to grips with What? there is normally around 20 to 30 cases of monkey pox a year in the uk in an average year. "

Exactly.. is it getting out of control ?

Think of it as similar to many of the virus transmission details we've become accustomed to over the last couple of years. "Human-to-human transmission is thought to occur primarily through large respiratory droplets." CDC, USA.

It may be caught from close proximity with the infected, bodily fluids etc but viruses are invisible, whereas lesions are not, though they may transmit viral particles.

They said that about Covid..

Let’s not worry just yet Tom, we can schedule the panic in for next week "

To be fair, they are only recommending that infected people wear condoms when having sex.... not all of the time.

I think an STD is something that is spread primarily by sex, rather than just something that can be passed on during sex. Otherwise, pretty much everything that is spread by touch, close contact or respiration would be classed as an STD... everything from colds and flu to chicken pox and headlice.

No, they’re not the reason for the majority of cases. Anywhere with close body contact is a transmission vector. Saunas, nightclubs, crowded pubs, swinger clubs, music venues, schools, packed public transport, etc etc. The suggestion that it is passed on sexually is misinformation. It is passed on by skin to skin contact but, that doesn’t necessarily have to be sexual contact. Whilst sexual contact is one way that transmission would occur, there are many other non-sexual situations too. To be stating that gay saunas are where the majority of infections occur is highly irresponsible. Doing so not only risks people thinking that it is an STI but, it also risks people thinking that it’s a “gay disease”, which causes a massive proportion of the population to be complacent because they believe that they won’t be affected by it simply because they don’t identify as a certain demographic. We only need to look at the HIV crisis to see the severity of that way of thinking.

Truth is, the probability of Monkeypox becoming a major cause for concern is incredibly low, simply based on how transmissible it is between humans. However, careless scaremongering is highly contagious.

I saw a good meme the other day that said something like, “A Monkeypox party already? But I’ve still got my War In Ukraine bunting still up!” I thought that was pretty spot on.

We're several steps on from the initial cases now Tom. I asked if you'd new data that warranted your proposition but it appears there's nothing.

As many of us have been encouraging, it's better viewed as an equal risk to us all. Albeit it's not as contagious as Covid and other commonly acquired infections.

From today's update from UKHSA...

"The risk to the UK population remains low, but we are asking people to be alert to any new rashes or lesions, which would appear like spots, ulcers or blisters, on any part of their body.

Although this advice applies to everyone, the majority of the cases identified to date have been among men who are gay, bisexual and men who have sex with men, so we are asking these people in particular to be aware of the symptoms, particularly if they have recently had a new sexual partner."

If it is passed on soley by skin to skin contact it would be fully traceable, but so far this has not been admitted. They are making assumptions on how it is passed on, and yet again the UK is out of its depth. Sad, because we have the best facilities and scientists but what they find seems to be diluted by Downing Street chumps. They are hoping they can contain it, but with a virus that has a fatality rate greater than Covid, indicates the government is gambling on it being contained.

Monkey fatality rate is between 1 and 10% at the beginning of the pandemic covid death rates weren't far off 10%. Covid was so deadly because it was easily spread and it was spread asymptomatically neither is the case for monkey pox.

Skin to skin contacts are not fully traceable because people are not always fully open about who they’ve had skin-to-skin contact with, and sometimes don’t know full details (for example in a club or on here you might know basic details of people but not their full name and address).

Probably an isolated outbreak in a gay club. Either way, its pointless worrying it or even trying to track it because Monkeypox is about as dangerous as a discarded KitKat wrapper gliding through the air on a windy day. Anyone letting themselves get frightened by this needs to wrap themselves in bubble wrap and just stay locked away indoors for the rest of their lives.

Was that in the UK? It's possible that the current outbreak has been around in the UK for a few years and only now recognised, now it's gathered more pace. Plus things are more open now, including health services.

Saying that is too sensible for a conspiracy theorist to believe.

I remember when the Trafford Centre was closed for the night because they were doing a simulated terrorist attack (multiple casualties due to bombings) a few years ago.

Going way back to when I was in school. I remember one of my teachers telling me their daughter (a Doctor) used to suit up in hazmat suits for simulated training for biological/chemical terrorism attacks.

Who needs training though? Why not just make it up on the fly like conspiracy theorists do with "their evidence."

"Some media articles are using old stock photos from other ailments such as shingles but in the many listed side effects that pfizer tried to have hidden for 75 years with the covid vaccine - autoimmune blistering is in there.

Funny how a monkeypox pandemic exercise was run in March 2021 stating an outbreak on 15th May 2022.

Yes and isnt it also called event 201? It simulates an outbrake too.

It was ran in October 2019Yes, it was organised on the 18th of October, 2019, a month before the first suspected case of covid-19 in hubei, china.

First suspected case was November 17th. They run simulations like this all the time. Uk has done their own as well and also ran simulations for other things like nuclear and terrorist attacks.

I used to work on the maintenance in a hospital and it has its own decontamination unit and often you’d see nursing staff in full suit’s training not sure if all hospitals have one or do this type of training

Who needs training though? Why not just make it up on the fly like conspiracy theorists do with "their evidence.""

Just seen this on the WHO update which relates...

"To date, the clinical presentation of confirmed cases has been variable. Many cases in this outbreak are not presenting with the classical clinical picture for monkeypox. In cases described thus far in this outbreak, common presenting symptoms include genital and peri-anal lesions, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and pain when swallowing. While oral sores remain a common feature in combination with fever and swollen lymph nodes, the local anogenital distribution of rash (with vesicular, pustular or ulcerated lesions) sometimes appears first without consistently spreading to other parts of the body. This initial presentation of a genital or peri-anal rash in many cases suggests close physical contact as the likely route of transmission during sexual contact. Some cases have also been described as having pustules appear before constitutional symptoms (e.g., fever) and having lesions at different stages of development, both of which are atypical of how monkeypox has presented historically."

"Breaking news that over half of UK Monkeypox cases are in the gay community..

What's going on here guys...

Probably an isolated outbreak in a gay club. Either way, its pointless worrying it or even trying to track it because Monkeypox is about as dangerous as a discarded KitKat wrapper gliding through the air on a windy day. Anyone letting themselves get frightened by this needs to wrap themselves in bubble wrap and just stay locked away indoors for the rest of their lives."

Agreed. I’d rather not get it, but it’s not going to kill millions.

Worcs

The bright sparks at big pharma use wild monkey blood plasma to cultivate vaccines they can apparently screen most of the Monkeys viruses but not the micro ones. Some have good reason to say that our autoimmune diseases are a result of this. They also do the same with horseshoe crabs!
