Covid rates seem to be rising faster in Scotland, where a lot of restrictions are still in place, than England

Anyone got any explanations for that?

The statistics could be skewed by a massive reduction in testing since the restrictions were reduced?

The ONS data from randomized testing backs up what the OP say. The infection rates in England although lower in general vary from area to area. The south west for instance is very high. Why is Scotland's infection rate so high not sure. There are virtually no restrictions up there now anyway.

The difference is the strain. The more prevalent strain in Scotland atm is the newer Omicron strain. It’s more transmissible, though not more serious. NI and Scotland both have that strain. England is only just showing it.

Also when you look at the areas hardest hit in Scotland atm - Glasgow & Lanarkshire then Orkney & Shetland - it’s clearly driven by lots of visitors and close interactions.

It’s to be expected - Glasgow & Lan always get hit hard with new strains because people live in close proximities in these areas and there are a lot of visitors. The islands will also get hit hard with new strains when restrictions are low because of the number of visitors.

I was just perplexed by the implication that the mask wearing wasn't making a difference

but I didn't know about the new variant of Omicron up here - that almost certainly explains it!

It's true we still have a lot of restrictions in place but the problem is very few are paying any attention to them

One of the main reasons is Scotland fared better than the rest of the UK in 2021 as a result England, Wales & Northern Ireland had a certain amount of immunity to the third wave which is affecting Scotland more than the others.

It is very possible this will be reflected next year with higher rates in the rest of the UK.

The good news is though the current strain is more contagious it is a milder type of covid.

Nobody knows for sure. Not enough work done yet.

However, it is no secret that Scotland's population has higher rates of obesity and underlying illness than the rest of the UK.

Until that is allowed for the per capita figure only provide an indication and is far more useful for tracking if the situation is improving or degrading.

Unfortunately we are no longer funding this as we are pretending that it's no longer a problem...

I took note on a bus here yesterday, 38 passengers, only 13 wearing masks and 6 of them were chip nappies.

Saw similar during Glasgow film festival, low numbers wearing masks and very little sign of using hand sanitisers

Only place ive noticed restrictions is in hospital settings, hardly anyone wears masks now.

They're still wearing them in supermarkets and public transport but it doesn't seem to be making much difference
