“Hong Kong will cull hundreds of hamsters after some tested positive for coronavirus, officials said, as the city pushes to maintain its strict "zero-Covid" strategy”

Poor buggers! All they want to do is store food in their cheeks and run on the spinning wheel

"Why on earth were they testing them? Awwww (hamster)"

“ The decision to cull about 2,000 hamsters and other small animals comes after health officials recorded Covid cases at a Hong Kong pet shop.

Health secretary Sophia Chan said the move will protect public health after a pet shop employee and a customer handling hamsters tested positive.”

Such a shame for the cute hamsters

They'd be guinea pigs if they identified as guinea pigs.

There would be 20 million of them after 5 days together.

Pledging not to inquire about them again...?

Sounds like they will be doing tests on them and not killing them.

The fight back begins…..

“Pet owners have defied authorities in Hong Kong and said they would have to be killed first before they abandon their much loved hamsters in a planned Covid cull. She told local outlet The Standard: “If the testing result shows I’m not infected no one can take my hamster away unless they kill me. The government is not treating pets as animals. Will they also kill all infected Covid-19 patients and their close contacts?”

“If you own a hamster, you should keep your hamsters at home, do not take them out,” said department director Leung Siu-fai at a news conference.

“All pet owners should observe good personal hygiene, and after you have been in contact with animals and their food, you should wash your hands.

“Do not kiss your pets.”
