CDC withdrawing use of pcr test

https://www.cdc.gov/csels/dls/locs/2021/07-21-2021-lab-alert-Changes_CDC_RT-PCR_SARS-CoV-2_Testing_1.html

" CDC encourages laboratories to consider adoption of a multiplexed method that can facilitate detection and differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses."

Thoughts? because that literally states that pcr testing cant differentiate between influenza and covid-19.

do you have the flu or covid-19? who knows?

the Pcr test certainly doesn't.

They are saying the PCR tests maybe pointless because the latest variant passes on so quickly it renders the 24hr+ time to turn round results is too slow and therefore useless.

Yes it does. It's telling labs to find another method that can also tell the difference.

Was on the news yesterday, I don't have the article to hand but said that transmission rates of omicron are so fast that within hours it can be passed on so the 24hr turn around for PCR results is simply not helpful. Think LFTs are going to be more used than PCR now. But only if done in an official testing venue.

interesting! but i thought LFT's were not as efficient as PCR's.

Will be interesting to see what happens next.

I'm not so sure making people infected with a highly contagious and deadly disease visit an official venue to get tested is a good idea.

Would testing, and isolating, at home be a safer option?

it never was. But the government still did that. Also sent infected patients back to care homes. Absolute disaster.

But that isn't what it says! It means that labs should find alternative tests THAT CAN ALSO TELL THE DIFFERENCE JUST LIKE A PCR TEST CAN.

'CDC encourages laboratories to consider adoption of a multiplexed method that can facilitate detection and differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses. Such assays can facilitate continued testing for both influenza and SARS-CoV-2 and can save both time and resources as we head into influenza season.'

.

They suggest finding a test that can detect both flu and covid to avoid the need for having 2 different tests.

OP should probably learn a little about molecular biology before attempting to read between the lines.

Also, PCR assays can indicate omicron due to S gene drop-out due to the variants at probe annealing site. Other targets (n and orf genes are still positive) This would then be confirmed via sequencing.

You have an incorrect understanding of what the CDC bulletin states, as well as the accuracy of the PCR test method OP. I've not read other posts but I'd be concerned if you'd received official government guidelines on pending changes and had misinterpreted it, as my employee. The tests have evolved, throughout the progression of the pandemic and the CDC efforts reflect this, to increase test kit accuracy and public health levels.

Because of the similarity of symptoms of different virus (sars-sars-cov-2/RSV/Flu) a single diagnostic test is required that can differentiate between different virus. Time tends to be critical.

This just proves that people read and understand what they like. You have had a mare."

Yup

"They are saying the PCR tests maybe pointless because the latest variant passes on so quickly it renders the 24hr+ time to turn round results is too slow and therefore useless.

please show me where it states that

Please show us all where it states that the PCR test can't tell the difference between Covid and Flu?

I am looking forward to the attempted answer of this question

It's literally in my first post.

What is your take on it?

My take is that your don't understand what's written.

"CDC encourages laboratories to consider adoption of a multiplexed method that can facilitate detection and differentiation of SARS-CoV-2 and influenza viruses."

Do you know what multiplexed detection is?"

nope, going to look it up now though

"

i see, thank you for clearing that up

"Because of the similarity of symptoms of different virus (sars-sars-cov-2/RSV/Flu) a single diagnostic test is required that can differentiate between different virus. Time tends to be critical.

Interesting paper at PMID: 34062939"

i will look up that paper thank you

The bulletin was from July 2021 (so nothing to do with the emergence of Omicron).

It's all about using a protocol that can identify multiple different viral pathogens via one test, rather than many separate tests, to speed up accurate diagnosis and probably save some money in the process.

That's all.

I think I could probably read between the lines whilst looking through ear holes and the empty void that lies between them.

"Oh Dear God !! back to this again ?? and read between the lines ??? that's most of the problem joining up dots that only exist in peoples mind ?? We would in the strongest words possible that if you doubt or hate science that much STOP using all the stuff science and scientists have given us ?? ie THE INTERNET

The Internet is code no science behind it. I code and I am no scientist I can create write code a module that will only work with my code. Once you know how to anyone can.

Ah but who wrote the magic that interprets your "code"

Not a scientist i never knew bill Gates was a scientist.

Many people listen to music everyday and never spare a thought as to how it magically comes from a speaker.

Many "programmers" type code all day and don't know how to count in hex or what makes a bit change state from 0 to 1

Strange world

It is the shift registers and magnitude comparators that make it all happen.

Dig deeper

It's turtles all the way down"

via the elephants?

Give the guy a break. He writes code no-one else can use, he hasn't got time to waste beyond that. Those rocks won't bang themselves!

"Was on the news yesterday, I don't have the article to hand but said that transmission rates of omicron are so fast that within hours it can be passed on so the 24hr turn around for PCR results is simply not helpful. Think LFTs are going to be more used than PCR now. But only if done in an official testing venue.

interesting! but i thought LFT's were not as efficient as PCR's.

Will be interesting to see what happens next. "

LFTs not quite as accurate as a PCR and also cannot tell which strain of Covid because they don't actually sequence the genetic material in the viral particles.

So they are withdrawing a perfectly accurate test for no reason? Doesn’t that sound off to you?? Why withdraw it if it’s so accurate?

Now I thought it was the home PCR tests they were withdrawing!

Because people can’t be trusted to do the test properly

They are not withdrawing PCR tests, they are withdrawing request for emergency authorisation on one specific brand.

When queried about this a CDC spokesperson:

"The PCR test in question—the CDC Novel Coronavirus (2019 nCoV) Real-Time RT-PCR—is “a highly accurate test” and the decision to discontinue the request for emergency use authorisation was not due to performance issues but because more PCR tests have become available from commercial manufacturers. "

Didn't anyone who is going on about home PCR testing etc not notice this is a CDC edict and therefore completely irrelevant to the UK home PCR testing system?? Even if you don't understand what it IS, it should be pretty fecking obvious that it does not pertain to the UK or the NHS when it is from the American CDC!

PCR tests are the gold standard test for Covid. The OP was ignorant of the USA guidelines and test background and didn't understand the changes underway therwm. The OP made a simple mistake, presumably as its not their area of expertise.

The fear of what? The fear that people have to do 1 test for covid and 1 for flu instead of one test for both? I am very confused.
