Is it wrong. My company have told me if that if the Government suggest a 2 week fire break & put us in semi lockdown. They expect the time off to be used as holiday??

No it's not wrong and it's lawful. They're your employer after all and need to protect their business, which you do not run. So yes, absolutely an employer can choose when an employee/worker can take annual leave. However, adequate notice needs to be given. As a general rule, an employer needs to give twice as much notice as the amount of holiday being taken. For example, if an employer wishes the employee/worker to take 5 days holiday, 10 days’ notice needs to be provided.

Some special legislation was passed in March last year, however, allowing employees to carry more leave forward than usual....in the interests of sorting this kind of thing out amicably, which most decent employers will be interested in doing.

Sounds unfair to me, even though it's legal

Sounds unfair to me too, but nothing unusual there

Legal but unfair....but, I'd rather "waste" my holiday then lose my job and try to find a new one in a lockdown.

Kind of a suck it up or deal with the consequences kinda situation isn't it

2 weeks for you. 4 weeks for the company without productivity. Can they absorb the cost.

We don't know what the restrictions will be yet. Work may or may not be restricted.

A total lockdown means furlough, and the Goverment will be keen to avoid that.

Furlough isn't a legal requirement either I'm afraid

If you are sick during annual leave, you will get to have your annual leave to be taken at a different date.

So the company won't be applying for furloughed payment then?

What would the situation be if it wasn't taken as holiday? Would you expect to get paid or unpaid?

If you go to a job interview your asking to be looked after . The employer will Deem you suitable or not. If successful at interview you then become an employee. The employer has a duty to look after your well-being under contract and you as an employee have a duty to look after your employers interests .

Without the furlough scheme, nearly every person who wound up on it would have been made redundant by their company , doing incredible damage to the economy and the state would still have to fund their employment benefit. I think it was necessary rather than political.

Absolutely. That's only fair to the genuinely sick. If however you're malingering, you can expect to be fired for gross misconduct.

Not to mention, the appalling waste of doctors' time pressurising them into writing 'fake' notes in the middle of a global pandemic.

As long as they don’t expect you to wfh at all during that period of that’s even possible for your role then yes they can do that

I would speak to your colleagues as well because a friend of mine had this a few days ago and does have holiday left however one of his colleagues doesn't. The employer is going to pay those that don't have any holiday left but enforce holiday on those that do. Seems exceptionally unfair.
