Lockdown starring

Central

The Dutch government has responded to the call in the past week, from their specialist advisory team to have a 2 week lockdown by starting a 3 week minimum lockdown from tomorrow, Saturday.

It's refreshing to see government following specialist recommendations. The call to action comes as health services get closer to overload. Some areas have low vaccination levels, helping to fuel high levels of serious illness.

Essential shops, bars etc will close at 8pm. People will be limited to 4 at home, so it's not the strict lockdown types from the start of the pandemic.

In the UK, experts suggested the England Plan B a few weeks ago, which would introduce mask wearing, amongst other thing.

No new variants that I know of. Their infection levels are high but, especially, their hospitals are very busy.

It's the first Western European country to restart lockdown type restrictions.

Bertie Booster Johnson has warned today of 'storm clouds' but, thankfully, made no atrocious jokes, like at Cop 26.

And that is before the obligation to apply full border controls on goods from the EU, starting on 1/1/2022.

I'm guessing that the current crisis EU/UK, re NI, is an attempt to deflect from the effect of those controls.....although Monsewer Frost seems to have backtracked since POTUS46 got involved...shame

Yes but if had went into lockdown sooner this would've also prevented the number of deaths and probably not as long into lockdown China did well as it had a very restricted regime

Seems to have missed the evidence on the UK lockdowns' effectiveness and the specialist advice . The UK benefited from them, the specialists advice was to lockdown earlier but the government didn't So the country suffered due to NOT taking on board and implementing the action advised by the specialists. There's not just 1 of them you know, it's a multidisciplinary team, experts in their fields.

The big issue that no one wants to confront are the hundreds and thousands of long haulers ( Long Covid) . With high levels of infection literally hundreds of new cases are developing every day. These are people whose lives will dramatically affected in the long term. It is also going to have a massive impact on the work force the longer we allow Covid run rife through the populations.

Here is a study from the States- 8 million people who will not be able to do their jobs in the same manner. https://www.healthline.com/health-news/returning-to-work-millions-in-uncharted-waters-due-to-long-haul-covid-19.

This is going to cost all of us in the long run. I am not saying we can prevent all long Covid cases but we should be doing more to control this virus.

We've seen that as time has progressed, we are much more successful in preventing and treating the virus and its effects, as well as high infection levels driving more dangerous variants.

We should be doing as much infection prevention as possible, as this buys time and gives greater chances both for success as well as greatest help for those infected and to prevent cases of long Covid.

Some common sense and following the evidence, can help us all.

The trouble is that if you watched the previous lockdowns they steadily got worse and worse at being adhered to.

Yes the govt can control a few businesses and the hospitality industry but during the third lockdown people were just having get togethers in homes. It didn't matter that the pubs were closed.

It would also require the reintroduction of all the various support programmes that have now ended and I am pretty sure the treasury will drag there heels on that and without that help businesses will ignore any attempts at lockdown.

The thing is, if and I say if, things get bad enough where we need a lockdown, it might not be a full lockdown as we had before.

It might be a partial one like what the Netherlands is currently implementing.

So our government may bring in plan B, which does not require shutting down businesses completely.

I've just come back from Slovenia. Everything there closes at 10.00 pm. All bars, restaurants & attractions ask to see your covid pass & passport before you're allowed access. There's a demo every Friday in the main square in Ljubljana every Friday evening. One of the restaurant owners told us that they don't dare order too much stock as they can't predict what happens tomorrow. The feeling I got is that businesses there expect another lockdown & I think once the Dutch do it then the other countries will more than likely follow.

It's fascinating, seeing how the different approaches in Europe have done. Germany did well to start with and now have very high infection levels. Their Dutch next door neighbours may influence them to tighten things, potentially. Passports have been active for several countries.

The position we are now in.. had we shut down earlier we might now be earlier in a curve we have to go through. Not necessarily a better position just an earlier one. Covid can not be stopped so it has to go through the population be that process fast or slow.

Restrictions is the better term for it. The UK was somewhat relaxed compared to other places, including France in stage 1, where people had to apply for and get a permit to leave their home. Wuhan was tough, with people as good as locked in

The Netherlands now has a 4 people maximum in the home - I'm guessing 5 person households are fine, it's prevention of large visitor numbers.

I don't know anyone wanting more lockdowns in the UK, despite some protesting against it. They are bringing forward the booster rollout, to 5 months post 2nd jab. This should restrict hospital loads.

As treatments have improved, there is justification to delay of any rises to infection levels. Plus, as winter is the hardest time of year for the NHS, it's sensible to have peaks delayed until winter has passed.

Higher infection levels also means higher levels of mutations and risks of variants of concern. We have justification to suppress infection levels just on that basis.

That's why the PCR tests are the gold standard of all the tests that Covid. It's possible that they could have an additional infection, potentially including flu. Both the vaccinated and unvaccinated may have asymptomatic Covid but at least anyone with a positive test result can rest at home, sparing others from the virus. It's good that Scotland and some other countries are taking more preventative measures than England though

How dare you blame the public that the government entrusted responsibility to use common sense, remain distanced and wear a mask at all times within an enclosed sspaces!

This is what you get when you remove practical and reasonable safeguarding for fellow human beings on the pretence of freedom.

Considering 80%, possibly 90% of the population don't give two shits about anyone else other than themselves, did anyone expect any other outcome?

I've lost count at how many meetings at schools, trips out that I am one of three or four in over one hundred people wearing a mask.

But take a step back. Jabbing 50m people (or whatever the number is) every 6 months (because that's as long as the "protection" lasts) isn't achievable. Herd immunity isn't achievable, because that would require 50m people or more to either be jabbed or infected every 6 months approx. .. Letting it run riot through the population is just dangerous. It may help some people... Who knows long term I guess we will find out as we are nearly 2 years into this already. I don't know what the answer is but continuing to spread infections isn't it...

But take a step back. Jabbing 50m people (or whatever the number is) every 6 months (because that's as long as the "protection" lasts) isn't achievable. Herd immunity isn't achievable, because that would require 50m people or more to either be jabbed or infected every 6 months approx. .."

The last few times I have done a (solo,of course)supermarket shop, I have longed for a return to stricter rules.

I am appalled by the lack of consideration to others by families and couples who talk incessantly while shopping. Never masked. Surely this selfish behaviour must significantly raise the danger from droplets in the air everyone has to share? When the first lockdown started, solo shopping was expected unless there were very good reasons to be accompanied.

Freedom is usually taken away from inconsiderate, anti social and law breakers or those that would endanger those around them and unfortunately sometimes it has to be applied to all for the sake of a few

We hope to maintain our freedom by being respectful, considerate and do into others as we would like them to do to us and if that means covering our mouth and nose in a supermarket and standing a few paces away from others in a queue then I really can't see the issue some people would like to make out if it.

Covid has had a very strange effect on some people worldwide

"

To think wearing a mask in crowded places and a bit of social distancing costs pennies and you get to keep doing all the things you like. It is a proper mind f&ck isn't it.... Funny thou mask worn in Wales and Scotland no difference to infection rate to England who have no masks , unless you have the N95 or medical approved ones pretty much useless "

Except that is untrue.

"Prof Spector, who fronts the ZOE Covid symptom tracker app, said he was against the measure in the Summer "because I didn't think we would need them".

He said: “Scotland’s rates have come down the fastest and it also has some of the highest rates of vaccination in the UK.

"At least 85% in most regions and Wales and Scotland are really the only two areas which have maintained some form of social distancing and mask wearing as well as some degree of vaccine certification."

How about the talkative yuppie couples and hyperactive young families shop on line?

I am sure it would be a doddle for them as they all seem married to their smartphones in the shops anyway.

I can just about manage using this site and even that is on a laptop, not a phone which is far too fiddly for me.

The only thing I usually buy on line is my car tax (so I can drive to the supermarket)!!

Our chancellor spent £160 billion of the £400 billion borrowed for the pandemic on a centralised Bank of England

There’s no money left for furlough like programs.

If there is a lockdown again (which I doubt) I’d like to see the faces of the people who are not key workers sent into the breach to stay home without pay.

No lockdowns in the UK are planned or proposed

. Key point here is that unless you propose staying in lockdown forever you cannot control this virus. All you can do is slow it down temporarily.. Then again i get the impression that quite a number of posters on here would actually like that scenario.

Last year, we needed stricter lockdowns earlier and far more lives would have been saved, now we're seeing the success of the vaccination programme, there's no need for more lockdowns - and i was a really strong advocate of restrictions. Official infections rates have been high but steady since August at between 30-50,000 a day, and although an average of circa 150-200 deaths a day is terrible (1 death is one too many), it's a small % of the deaths we would have seen before vaccinations without lockdowns. Get the booster jab rolled out more quickly for all adults, then a regular vaccination at least once a year, plus we'll all get Covid at some point, and the combination of natural and vaccine immunity in the whole population preventing serious disease together with new therapies like the new pill for people at risk to take within five days of a positive test, and life i feel feel pretty normal and safe again by next summer, even against new strains emerging elsewhere in the world. Until of course the next new novel virus, which unless we deal with climate change and loss of biodiversity is far more likely than it was before.

It’s a three shot vaccine. Just look at how Israeli cases plummeted once they started the 3rd jab.

I wish the government would come out and say this to us- three shots are high effective against Delta - we should be jabbing everyone down to 5 years of age, keeping NPI’s tight over the winter and vaccine passports for all social venues to nudge those hesitant to take the vaccine.

People who aren't vaccinated can't leave home, except for work or essential shopping, from tomorrow, in Austria. No restrictions for those who have been vaccinated.

Central Borders

The Netherlands has had the least restrictions / "lockdowns" of all of Europe. Their problem now is that there's an awful lot of anti vaxxers and ICU is filling up awfully quickly (with the anti vaxxers). They only have 1050 ICU beds, so not many available at all.

Germany wasn't able to offer their ICU beds this time around (they have twice before and the Dutch made good use of it). They seem to have found a way to squeeze the Dutch back in thankfully and have 80 beds available if necessary. Although I really hope they won't be needed.

The only reason why they would put restrictions back in place is when hospitals are overflowing. If that's not happening, I don't believe it's justified anymore to shut businesses down again x

What a godawful rule to be out in place

I'd hope that most people would fight wholeheartedly against the construction of a second class citizen tier but I doubt it

On one hand they'll talk about compassion and understanding, but then they'll say 'they should just get the jab like I did. I'm a good little dog'

The government recommendations are that we should wear a face covering if we feel it is appropriate and the same for social distancing, so if people don't feel it's appropriate they are following the government's recommendations to the letter. The signs in supermarkets ask people to consider wearing face coverings and keep their distance.

Sad to see some people so obviously terrified of being surrounded by human beings simply choosing to get on with normal life.

I am not terrified or I wouldn't go to the shops. I take a calculated risk but sometimes my risk parameters get modified by selfish others.

As for getting on with normal life, Life can hardly be described as 'normal' even though we are 'unlocked'.

All I ask is that people who go to shops mob handed and loquacious might stop and think about their possible impact on the safety of others. Slim chance.

By the way, I can easily spot 'agents provocateur\provocatrice on here.

The person who wants supermarkets designed around himself calls other people selfish

I don't think that's what he said at all. Simply to follow the government recommendations and the notices on the doors of all supermarkets.

The government recommendations are that we should wear a face covering if we feel it is appropriate and the same for social distancing, so if people don't feel it's appropriate they are following the government's recommendations to the letter. The signs in supermarkets ask people to consider wearing face coverings and keep their distance. "

More accurately...from gov website.

Coronavirus remains a serious health risk. You should stay cautious to help protect yourself and others.

Let fresh air in if you meet indoors. Meeting outdoors is safer

Wear a face covering in crowded and enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you do not normally meet

Get tested and self-isolate if required

If you haven’t already, get vaccinated

Find out how to stay safe and help prevent the spread

All supermarkets near me have posters up asking people to wear a face mask.

Everything is down to the goverments taking control and getting greedy. Close small businesses, kill off people all about monopolising the world.

Look at the sham of petrol shortage....panic panic panic..to then slide the fuel prices up to 15p a litre, but then combat it with the reduced 8p in earnings for some.

More things are to come, it's so obvious but they use this big covid distraction ads the main tool to control everything.

Need to get rid of the government's, end of. Realistically they are just grand bull shi**ers supported by the friends called media which in turn creates the crap we all suffer. Every distraction is a small percentage of there bigger picture of control.

Utter rubbish. As if you think all the big countries in the world colluded on this.

Government has no control over petrol prices - learn about market forces and supply/demand.

Here in Ireland we have lots of restriction s still in place. 92% vaccinated, and 8% not vaccinated, yet we are now recording our highest rate of infections EVER. Its unlikely the 8% are wandering around infecting everyone, as mask wearing and social distancing is mandatory, and many are still working from home. It's time to re examine our fear of this virus, and accept it, With its consequences. All government decision making around this virus is essentially fear based, fear of losing their seats, losing next election,.. Its almost impossible for any party in power to admit they got it wrong... But to continue to promote vaccination as the only cure, when by any standards we've reached herd immunity(remember that? ), is foolish. What happens when we reach 100% vaccination in some communities? Who can we blame for spreading the disease then?

The triple jabbed are already blaming the double jabbed. Anyone but themselves basically. As if the 8% aren't primarily comprised of people with natural immunity. Anti-vaxxers aren't exactly the stay at home types.

You can still get it and spread it if you are vaccinated.

Yes however there is growing evidence that shows you are upto 50% less likely to infect someone else if you have been vaccinated.

Recommendations are exactly that.. recommendations.

You do not have to follow. The government will have lots of recommendations to balance, sometimes you get it right sometimes you don’t!

Considering this is a situation the world hasn’t seen in the modern era, mistakes were going to be made!

Too pessimistic? What would have happened if they were optimistic and got it wrong.. you would have been moaning.

Hindsight is easy to make judgements.

It’s easy for all of us to sit and criticise.. when none of us know the full facts.. or even worse judge a situation based purely on selfish reasons!

We can use the evidence available to us, which we now have incredible volumes of. The state should not outsource responsibility for things that are rightly held by those elected to manage society for the benefit of us all. It's unreasonable to expect each citizen to be able to learn and keep updates with scientific evidence too, when the government experts can do this, with setting of appropriate policies.
