COVID is not FAB!

If anyone thinks COVID is getting better, think again!

Having had our third social cancel in two weeks because of positive LFT/PCR tests, was just wondering whether it had affected everyone on here too? It’s so disappointing but absolutely nothing we can do about it

Please think when you go out ‘maskless’ - this virus is still very much alive and kicking, and clearly affecting the social life!!

Off for flu jab this afternoon!

It's also another good excuse for people bailing out, without actually having covid A change from the usual car troubles and family emergencies I suppose.

I personally still wouldn't buy it though If people get cold feet, just say so. Everyone's right to change their mind to meet someone x

"Covid is over as a serious issue. We all need to get back to normal now. We don't have this level of hysteria for the flu!"

No it isn't. The winter may result in serious issues for the NHS.

We are getting there. The cases now since "freedom day" have roughly hovered between 7 day avg of 27k-47k. It's up and down but really demonstrates that the vaccines are allowing us those freedoms without exponential growth in cases. Hospitalisations are a bit worrying but the ICU figures aren't too crazy. This clearly shows that the vaccine is not only reducing hospitalisations but, more importantly, those who do end up in hospital are even less likely to end up in ICU and die.

You lose all credibility when you mention the flu. Some people say that flu is more deadly than Covid. Lets just go with that idea for the moment. Covid is far more transmissble so if you let both covid and flu run naturally, covid deaths will be many times greater than flu deaths. If you understood this then perhaps you'd appreciate the reaction...

You can't go back to the past or pretend that today is the same as it used to be.

Covid is both more infectious and more severe in its effects, in comparison with flu too

If people ignore the risks of this, without taking precautions, the damage to the country is far worse. Don't you think we've paid too much as it is? . Lives list, damage to life and the economy etc.

It's coming to winter and the risks are far more severe than in other seasons. It's intelligent to reduce infection numbers.

"Ah "Cases". You mean tests that are positive regardless of symptoms!

Many of these so-called "cases" are asymptomatic and the only reason they exist in the statistics is a technical one.

I'd define a "case" as a debilitating symptomatic illness where the affected person is ill and unable to functon.

These "cases" are mostly amongst younger people who don't even know they are "ill" as they don't get symptoms. Where they do get symptoms, it's inevitably mild and inconsequential.

Stop playing the numbers game. Covid is largely over."

Play 'let's pretend' all you like. Elsewhere, people live in the real world and gain knowledge and wisdom.

Right now the next vaccine resistant COVID variant is evolving itself right here in the U.K.

We could try to keep infections down whilst millions have various stages of vaccine induced antibody status - but no.

We allow the virus free hand across the country and do it is inevitable that next and deadliest variant will come from these shores.

Only 2% of the worlds population has been vaccinated and some people think that we are safe whilst taunting the virus to get on top of the vaccines.

We actually deserve what’s coming.

I’m double jabbed. It’s day 17 now since my symptoms started. I had several days in bed and today was exhausted after doing nothing but sitting at the hairdressers for three hours. No, it’s not killing people at the same rate it was, but it’s bloody horrible all the same. It’s definitely not only affecting the young in an asymptomatic way, I’ve got two other friends who have suffered similarly in different parts of the country since I got my positive test result. I agree that we can’t all hide away forever, but don’t play it down based on what you think you know.

I don't know. It depends upon how the authorities define a "case" Somebody not ill, who presents no symptoms, gets tested and is suddenly included in the stats as a "case" despite being perfectly healthy) isn't a case. They just happened to be a product of a test which otherwise wouldn't have happened.

Ah what a great thread! Full of full-throttled argument with no-one really serving up proper data to support their argument. That’s why this site is better for entertainment than Facebook.

Unsupported fact 1: Covid is dangerous!

Unsupported fact 2: Even with double vax, Covid is still dangerous.

Unsupported fact 3: Cases are still ruddy high with an estimated 1 in 50 with Covid last week.

Unsupported fact 4: If I’m living under a stone I’m less likely to get Covid than if I’m not.

Unsupported fact 5: If I meet people I might get it which may lead to a list of further unintended consequences which may be listed as subsequent unsupported facts: UF6: I might die. UF7: Someone else might get it. UF8: They might die as a result. UF9: I don’t think I’ve had it yet. UF8: I’m terrified of Ebola! UF9: At least Trump’s not in office or America would have had worse Covid problems. UF10: I’m on a roll here but swiftly running out of shit to write here! UF11: Screw Covid! UF12: If you’ve read this far, you’re more mad than I am! UF13: You better stop trying to read this post after this sentence cos I can’t be arsed to write another ruddy UF!!!!!

"70% of deaths right now are double vaccinated people.

"

Given that pre-vaccine, the VAST majority of deaths were in the elderly (average age of 82 they said), isn't 70% of deaths being in the double vaccinated group a very good sign that the vaccine IS working given that about 95% of over 80s are double vaccinated?! Those unvaccinated are generally the under 40s which clearly suggests a swing in deaths towards the younger people. Again, demonstration that the vaccine IS working.

Also, don't forget, the "old were dying anyway" and "they died within 28 days could have been a bus" arguwment. The old are double vaccinated so lots of ill old codgers catch covid and die anyway. Suddenly, those individuals that are used to demonstrate that covid only affects the old are being used to to argue the other way.

How do you know that if you're not a clairvoyant?!

Because it's fucking obvious with corona viruses in the winter! You really do need to do some research!

Anyway, before you burst a blood vessel, you know that cases will increase (likely, I agreed) but you don't have a clue by how many...However say

"Covid is over as a serious issue"

and

"We all need to get back to normal now"

kind of looks stupid don't think you?!?

I don't recall giving you a figure.

I know.. that's why I just wrote

"but you don't have a clue by how many"

I don't know. It depends upon how the authorities define a "case" Somebody not ill, who presents no symptoms, gets tested and is suddenly included in the stats as a "case" despite being perfectly healthy) isn't a case. They just happened to be a product of a test which otherwise wouldn't have happened.

This happens in schools and workplaces all the time. If we had a similar test for cancer, would we be shutting down the country?"

The authorities define a case the same as they always have done. Someone who tests positive on a PCR test...

Is cancer contagious? If someone gets cancer, is there a risk that they pass it on to 7 other people, who pass it on to 7 others? Nope!

"No. It's basically over. Yes there will be more positive covid tests in the winter; That's inevitable. It's largely inconsequential now. Most won't die. It's time to get a grip and stop living this nonsense."

Better hope that the A30 (A.VOI.V2) sars-cov-2 variant doesn't start to spread in the UK.

It has a heavily-mutated spike protein and easily evades current vaccine-induced antibodies

One of my work colleagues, (a gym going healthy 45 year old) caught it in March, he is only about 90% recovered now. He was hospitalised for three weeks at his worst requiring a ventilator for a couple of days.

The effects of this virus vary massively frome One person to the next. I have personally been in VERY close proximity with several people who tested positive the next day, but I have never had a positive test or symptoms.

The definition of what a case is, isn't for individuals to define. They are defined as an international measure.

Would you not count "asymptomatic" people with HIV or Cancers, what about HPV, chlamydia, Gonorrhoea etc... these can all be asymptomatic for long periods before their impact is felt. In many cases a successful virus/disease has developed to be asymptomatic initially whilst being transmitted unnoticed.

I think it is worth clarifying that whilst a ‘case’ may not affect that individual they can subsequently infect others who may fall seriously Ill

In addition it is not inevitable that a younger person gets mild and inconsequential symptoms.

I am not staying in and avoiding the world due to covid, I am happy to continue my daily business but I also still consider covid as an additional risk to factor in to everyday life.

It is getting better though. People are now getting it and being mostly mildly ill. Much of the danger has been removed, and even the mildest of cases are even milder now for the majority of people.

"No. It's basically over. Yes there will be more positive covid tests in the winter; That's inevitable. It's largely inconsequential now. Most won't die. It's time to get a grip and stop living this nonsense."

And so it is. We live in the age of unreason. It's not over and will never be over. Infectious diseases don't just come and go like a guy with a premature ejaculation problem! Covid will be with us for ever and a day; as human immunity builds year on year, then it will become less of a threat to the fit, healthy and young, but it will be a decade before the whole world has enough immunity that the threat is fully diminished. Meanwhile the vulnerable will remain at serious risk. Most won't die true, but many will and if it's a loved one of yours, you may think again. Only the deluded think it's over. But that's no bad thing, since if we lost all the deluded to Covid, it might help us save the planet from climate change!

"Reading this terror thread on how awful things are... are the jabs not working then? "

Yes they are. It's extremely clear that they are working well.

1. We've opened up and mixing yet the cases are relatively steady. Since "freedom day" cases have ranged from about 30k to 50k on 7 day average. Compare that to the exponential increase at various times pre-rollout.

2. The number of deaths is significantly lower.

3. Less people are requring ICU

4. Evidence shows that someone who is double vaccinated is less likely to catch from a household member who is positive than had they not been double vaccinated.

5. 1/3rd of cases are in school aged children despite them being much less than 1/3rd of the UK population. These are generally unvaccinated.

Total deaths up to week 41, 2021: 458,955

Total deaths up to week 41, 2020: 473,702

Total deaths up to week 41, 2015-2019 average: 419,249

There's obviously something not working...

No one was double vaccinated in 2020 and there was no covid 2015 til 2019. Not sure what point you are making?

The difference in 2021 deaths and 2020 deaths is statistically irrelevant and quite likely to end up with the same figure by the end of the year if you look at the trend

Wrong unfortunately death toll for 2020, remember only had covid in uk for about 9 months that year, 608002 highest in the 5 years previous was 541589 in 2018. Average for 5 years was around 530000. That is an increase of 15% which is statistically significant.

Not wrong, these are England and Wales figures straight from the ONS. So don't be intellectually dishonest by mixing and matching full year figures against partial years or UK against England and Wales.

My figured are all from ONS. Didn't include 2021 as obviously not a full year. Something happened in 2020 for deaths to increase by 15%. I suggest that reason was covid 19. What do you suggest it was?

What does that have to do with my point that deaths in 2021 are not statistically significantly different to 2020 as of week 41? "

Why pick week 41 not the whole year? The uk was locked down for the majority of the year. Lockdown reduced the covid deaths, and in fact other deaths in general down to low levels. Was only when lock down was released deaths rocketed just happened to be after week 41. Death rate in 2020 was the highest in both total numbers and deaths per thousand population since 1918. I am not arguing with your numbers but I fail to see what point you are making.

Seriously? Do you have weeks 42-52 for 2021 or something?

"

The uk was locked down for the majority of the year. Lockdown reduced the covid deaths, and in fact other deaths in general down to low levels.

"

Pure lie, the opposite is true. The top 4 weeks for deaths were weeks 15-18, during the first lockdown.

"

Was only when lock down was released deaths rocketed just happened to be after week 41. Death rate in 2020 was the highest in both total numbers and deaths per thousand population since 1918.

"

Another lie, 2020 was 10.2 deaths per 1,000 people. Every single year from when that measure starts in 1953 to 2003 was higher or the same.

"

I am not arguing with your numbers but I fail to see what point you are making."

Sorry but there's no basis for us to have a conversation. You're saying things that are just outright wrong and since there's no way for me to post screenshot of the ONS data that would prove you wrong, it's best to just leave it. I find you a very intellectually dishonest person.

"

Many of these so-called "cases" are asymptomatic and the only reason they exist in the statistics is a technical one.

"

Absolute rubbish. Anyone who is asymptomatic can pass it on the same as someone having a real hard time. Very possible who ever it is passed to will get ill. No idea where you get your info from but you need to stop spreading rubbish.

"Just recovered from covid.. For those that have has proper flu it is very similar. 4 days in bed. Rotten cough, tired.. All over in 4 weeks.

Time to get on with life "

Both myself and the wife are on wk 3.

She is double jabbed and I have had one in feb.

As I said to someone earlier elsewhere. Please don't go thinking the jab will save the world, it is Purely a money making business for the gov.

There are cheap antiviral drugs as used in India and the USA that have much better results. Some of which have been removed from the market where they could be free purchased. Some trials have been set up in the UK with some of those drugs and used incorrectly and given at the wrong time to help, consequentially they are now not being used.

They are also finding some of these cheap drugs work reasonably well against Cancer by stopping reproduction. Medical science has moved on in leaps and bounds recently with everyone looking for a covid cure.

Just a pity a lot is being censored and misrepresented to us the common person.

If you mean HCQ or a common dewormer you are very wrong. If you mean dexametasone, very cheap or some antivirals not cheap then they have been proven to help recovery. That stuff you are saying about cancer is rubbish and just plain wrong. You are right that medical science has come along way that why drugs and vaccines work better are safer and generally have less side effects because these days we do proper double blinded trials.

"No. It's basically over. Yes there will be more positive covid tests in the winter; That's inevitable. It's largely inconsequential now. Most won't die. It's time to get a grip and stop living this nonsense."

BRAVO. Don't believe all you hear from media and news

Research evidence is generally available and this pandemic has seen the greatest levels of global collaboration and data sharing in human history. There are still ongoing trials, including here in the UK. The source of the data for everyone is going to be in the scientific journals where it is all published.

Reporting of scientific data by general media is likely going to be poorly communicated, due to the lack of expertise. Fortunately, the sheer volumes of global sharing this period means that we've never been in such a strong position for our health to benefit so much

Lol. Except for deleting a database of ~40,000 coronavirus samples, denying the funding of gain of function research and doing everything possible to obfuscate the origins of the virus.

Surely it's time to get rid of the virus section from here? As every thread is just the same "I get all my news from Facebook bro" tinfoil hat brigade, who will have you believe that it's nothing to worry about even if you havnt been vaccinated.

Getting rid of the virus section would likely just mean Covid posts would infect the rest of the forum. On those grounds, best to keep it.

Plus we are still in the pandemic. So the reminder doesn't hurt.

Finally, if anybody doesn't want to read anything about Covid, they can simply avoid this part of the forum.
