Do you use a lateral flow test (the type you can get free from chemists)... or ....?

If you get a positive from an LFT then you are almost certainly positive but a negative doesn't mean you are clear. As other posters say get a PCR test.

Yes, a negative LFT is a maybe, and a positive is a yes. PCR is definitive.

So I carried out my own test. A member of the house hold tested positive on a friday so we had to order PCRs according to guidance, I was negative on a lateral flow, friday Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I took my PCR on the Sunday and it was positive yet a lateral flow was negative until the Tuesday when a faint line appeared on the lft. The lft tests for the protiens found in the virus (according to the booklet in the box).

I am now not to take any lft or PCR as it could show positive for up to 90 days after the infection.

If your positive on an LFT with symptoms you get a PCR. LFT is good at detecting if C19 or just a cold, it will show if you have covid. It did me and confirmed by PCR.

My symptoms on LFT test were classic cold, runny nose, temp, sneezing but if you have those symptoms and LFT is negative its highly unlikely you have covid

That's not quite correct as LFT and PCR look for different things.

PCR looks for viral RNA and enough of his can be detected long after infection to give a positive. That's why T&T say you can't have another PCR test until 90 days after infection.

PCR positive does not mean you are either ill or infectious, just that enough fragments of viral RNA were detected to give a positive result. You could have had the infection months ago.

LFT looks for active virus - antigens - You'll only see these during the active stage of infection ie when you're still contagious which is up to 9 days after infection. This is why you should isolate for 10 days if you have symptoms. You can do a lateral flow after 10 days but you should show a negative.

You can find this information in various places but we have a friend who is a WHO epidemiologist and this info came from her.

PCR is always more sensitive than LFT. I'm suprised that with symptoms the LFT didn't register a positive as they usually will if someone has symptoms, and being somewhat sceptical of all the testing, it could always be that you had Covid a while back but were asymptomatic and now you have a cold?

Best err on the safe side and self isolate just in case.

Yeah and as the guy above said... The lfts don't need to wait 90 days. But not t and t calls I got told me not to do either pcr nor lfts...not a massive deal but would would be good if they shared correct information with us.

At a guess because whatever it tests for hadn't developed in your immune system on the weds... A day later it had?

I did a pcr test at work 2 weeks ago on Thursday, got the results back on Saturday as positive. So on the advice of my manager I went and got a 2nd pcr and on the Sunday the results came back negative. However I had to go off the first test isolate at home for 10 days

I caught Covid between Friday - Monday. PCR was negative Monday but positive Tuesday. I did daily LFT each day, didn’t get a positive until Thursday, and it was a very feint one at that. I had definitely had it since the weekend.

I fully expect the availability of tests to be greatly reduced soon. It’s a huge burden on tax payers and given it is clear we are now all going to come into contact with Cov19 sooner or later the usefulness of mass testing is starting to decline.

I have no idea what to think as far as the lft’s are concerned, a good friend with symptoms took 2 lft’s a day for 2 days and all were negative. Took a PCR on the 5th day as symptoms were worsening and it came back positive.

Another friend was exactly the opposite, no symptoms but was contacted by T&T, took an lft which came back positive so went and got a PCR test which came back negative. Never did develop symptoms

Same as the above.

Lft's are not as accurate, they should be used as a frequent indicator whilst you wait for, and get the result of your PCR test.

If you can work from home, communicate this with your employer, its in their interest not to risk an ill work force.

Curious as with the booster's being implemented due to the efficacy of the vaccine seeming to wear off after 8 odd months, I'm curious as to how long ago you'd have had your 2nd shot (and therefore be "fully protected")

Covid is present in your system for 9 months after you have had covid. So even after testing positive done who isolating and no temp for 5 consecutive days, the last 5 days of 10 day isolation you are considered covid free. But exempt for 9 months from close contact testing as til automatically show positive. Hence the reason for recovery certs.

Bottom line go isolate get tested and protect those around you and yourself.

When I had COVID a couple of months back I tested negative on lateral flow whilst I actually felt ill, didn't test positive until after I felt better (but could no longer smell). So not convinced by their reliability. It also took over 48 hours to get my PCR result back. Mind you there had been a big uptick in new cases that week, so I think the testing system was overloaded.

Thats the danger as the cold has exactly the same symptoms as covid (Double Jabbed) so could be just a cold but could be covid and how many people could you infect if you don't test? Why i suspect reason for high number of cases, worse how many more are covid positive

We haven't deconditioned our immune systems with masks,there would be a lot of sick Dr's and nurses around. Colds are going round suddenly because we are not socially distancing not wearing masks and not being as good with our hand hygiene anymore. All the things that stop covid spreading stops colds too.

I did a lft and it wasn't clear so I immediately booked a PCR and was positive. Scary how quickly the symptoms developed.

If you can get a PCR then do it would be my advice.

I didn't realise the double jabbed symptoms were as listed above. I'm on day 5 of the worst "cold" I can ever remember having. Lft was clear but booked in for a pcr in a bit. Totally lost my voice which the kids think is hilarious. Fingers crossed it is just a nasty cold.

When I was younger and even pre covid, I thought it was ok to go to the office even if I had flu… And I did not mind if others turned sick at work.

Many years ago, I had a colleague from Korea who turned up to the office wearing a face mask.

The rest of us were looking at him as if he was an alien.

Now with covid my mentality has changed. I have realized how wrong I was all these years. Covid taught me to be more conscious, careful and respectful towards others.

My dear old mum always taught me... Keep your germs to yourself. If you're ill, keep away from others. Cover your mouth when you cough, wash your hands etc etc... The last few years it's like it's been turned into rocket science... I shit you not... Laminated posters in toilets showing people how to wash their hands!

We have posters in our toilets - with pictures! - explaining how to use them.

Close but not quite, you missed the RT bit out which is in front of PCR.

That stands for reverse transcription where we convert RNA to DNA which is what we actually look for.

LFTs should not be used if you have symptoms, it says it on the box it's in.

If you are asymptomatic you can use an LFT if you have one or more symptoms you use a rt-pcr.

A positive PCR or LFT result means you have CoVID_19

A negative PCR or LFT result does not mean you don't have CoVID_19. It just means you didn't find any/enough on the swabs. It isn't always in nose or throat.

We both had cold symptoms and one of us had a routine telephone doctors appointment so mentioned this to the doctor. We asked if we should book PCR tests and were told as the symptoms we had described weren't covid symptoms we should both do Daily LFT tests and as long as there where negative it should be fine. We booked PCR tests just in case and came back negative this morning.

There is a cold going round due to lockdown, isolation and mask wearing the has exactly the same symptoms as covid for double jabbed. LFTs do not always pick it up so you can be covid positive and not realise

But no one reads instruction surly you just rip it open and go for it.

If you get a positive from an LFT then you are almost certainly positive but a negative doesn't mean you are clear. As other posters say get a PCR test."

Yep, I had a negative lateral flows Friday Saturday Sunday Monday and a feint positive on the Tuesday, my pcr came back positive from the Sunday!

Direct from the instruction sheet in the Acon-Flowflex test kit (NHS test and trace)::

"This COVID-19 self-test kit is a swab test for the nose to check if you are infectious. It is for people who have symptoms as well as those with no symptoms"

Apparently only around 20% of those testing register the result.
