Melbourne

How are all the Australian members keeping active and entertained during these non stop lockdowns?

Luckily I've kept my job the whole time otherwise I'd be losing my mind.

Australia are testing a facial recognition and geolocation app to enforce regulations for those isolating.

A text is sent at random times - the recipient has 15 minutes to submit a picture of their face in the location where they are supposed to be - failure to do this within the 15 minute window results in a visit from the police.

It may be used in addition to the quarantine camps they are building.

We've always stayed steady in our opinion that the Australian government is over reaching its powers and that when the governments do this with little resistance from it's citizens because a sizable minority believe it's government propaganda you'll end up with the Taliban eventually.

Agreed.

Government over reach should be fought at every opportunity

The idea that 'oh, our government isn't like other governments and wouldn't become put of control' is naive at best

Sounds like an excellent technical solution when people are supposed to be isolating. If we had had something like that here possibly we wouldn't have had such a shambles here of people bringing the virus in and immediately sharing it in public places instead of staying home when they were told. Who knows, if we had been taking border controls, testing and self-isolation seriously, we might even have prevented delta taking hold.

Basically if people will not behave like sensible grown ups when in the middle of the biggest global crisis for a hundred years, then they need to be treated like naughty children.

Quite literally...Taliban will be steam rolling accross the southern hemisphere soon same way isis took vast parts of Iraq and Syria...hence the need to lockdown the aussies for one case. Or did you think we left those planes and weapons due to poor planning lol

Their vaccination rate is under 30% so they are way short of herd immunity. Lock down is the only way.

Boris to the rescue!

“Uk bails Australia out with four million Pfizer dose swap - PM Scott Morrison called the vials “four million doses of hope” and says they will touch down within weeks. The deal will double their current September stock…

Morrison celebrated the agreement – which will see the donation reciprocated towards the end of the year – as a “good deal between mates”, from “Downing Street to Down Under”. Morrison told the press conference: “Thanks Boris, I owe you a beer, cheers.”

True - we are at about 70% single dose and just over 30% double dose in NSW. Looks like lockdown may lift around October or November.

South Australia has begun a home-based quarantine trial which is tipped to expand to international arrivals.

It will start this week for people returning from New South Wales and Victoria.

Premier Steven Marshall said he hoped the trial would be expanded to international travellers in "subsequent weeks", making it a national first.

Those in home-based quarantine will need to download an app, developed by the South Australian Government, to prove they are staying home while required to.

People wanting to return to South Australia and home quarantine will have to apply to SA Health.

They will have to prove they have a place to isolate during their quarantine period and must also be fully vaccinated.

Those who are approved will have to download the South Australian Government home quarantine app, which uses geo-location and facial recognition software to track those in quarantine.

The app will contact people at random asking them to provide proof of their location within 15 minutes.

Premier Steven Marshall said, "We don't tell them how often or when, on a random basis they have to reply within 15 minutes,"

In the UK we can’t even get our Track and Trace to work never mind face recognition technology. There’s dating apps with better technology.

I'd agree if guns could be done away with wholesale

But having only a few with guns is not ideal at all, and especially in situations where the government are the only one's armed, because of you think governments are only capable of benevolence you are, at best, supremely naive

Ah...the scary government with their totalitarian attacks on our freedoms...this argument from "averting tyranny" and safeguarding liberty is a hackneyed one. As if the army couldnt overwhelm a civilian militia! We have checks and balances constraining the power of the government precisely so that we dont need to fear our leaders in this regard. Guns are not a last resort when it comes to freedom but rather they guarantee disaster and societal degredation to the point that we feel we need a "strong leader" to overcome the nihilistic wasteland we would create when the citizenry are locked and loaded

Australia have managed to protect their population. Very few people have died of covid. Once the vaccine programme has allowed all adults the chance for 2 jabs you will see internal movement and freedoms return. Borders may remain closed for longer.

I protect my kids by forcing them to stay in their rooms and not letting them out. Works a treat as they hardly ever come across any risk in life. Better they have very very slightly less risk than the ability to get on with their own lives I reckon.
