“ More than half of Covid hospitalisations are patients who only tested positive after admission, leaked data reveal.

The figures suggest vast numbers are being classed as hospitalised by Covid when they were admitted with other ailments, with the virus picked up by routine testing.

Experts said it meant the national statistics, published daily on the government website and frequently referred to by ministers, may far overstate the levels of pressures on the NHS.“

It doesn't really matter if they go in because of or are diagnosed in there they still need to kept separate from everyone else and need extra careful nursing to not spread it so the pressure is still there.

Alternatively this means that covid is far more widespread and a much greater problem than the figures on the government website suggest. Patients infected with covid have to be kept separate from other patients no matter what reason they were initially admitted for. The alternative is to let covid infection run rife throughout every hospital, likely causing a repeat of the care homes scandal. If covid got loose on the general wards of a hospital it would require cancellation of ALL other treatment in that hospital, isolation of all patients, isolation of all medical and support staff - effectively a close down of the entire hospital.

Under testing of the population and cases only picked up after admission does not mean that the pressures on the NHS are overstated. It means that the scale of the crisis in the population is much larger than government figures have been suggesting, that asymptomatic cases are out of control, and that "freedom day" was an unbelievably stupid policy.

"“may far overstate the levels of pressures on the NHS.“

"

Absolutely not, if anything it serves to illustrate the additional pressures faced when you are treating a patient but then also have to factor in care based on a positive covid test. There isn’t a single department in the NHS who’s timings with extra precautions and workloads haven’t been increased significantly.

“ The leaked data – covering all NHS trusts in England – show that, as of last Thursday, just 44 per cent of patients classed as being hospitalised with Covid had tested positive by the time they were admitted.

The majority of cases were not detected until patients underwent standard Covid tests, carried out on everyone admitted to hospital for any reason.

Crucially, this group does not distinguish between those admitted because of severe illness, later found to be caused by the virus, and those in hospital for different reasons who might otherwise never have known that they had picked it up.“

“Last month health officials instructed NHS trusts to provide a breakdown of the current stock of Covid patients, splitting it into those who were in hospital primarily because of the virus and those there for other reasons. So far, NHS England has failed to publish this data.”

That's a strange assumption based on the information provided. My assumption would be that people will get ill regardless of whether they have been tested or not. Anyone who is admitted to hospital with covid symptoms WILL be tested (obviously).

Which experts have suggested that the NHS isn't experiencing the levels of patients that they "claim"? I have looked and can't find any credible sources claiming that.

“Prof Heneghan urged the Government to publish clearer data, including whether or not the virus was the primary cause of hospital admission.

"This needs to be fixed as a matter of urgency," he said, adding that the published data could lead the public "towards false conclusions", exaggerating the true levels of pressures on hospitals.”

Under testing? we are testing about 3 times more people per 100,000 than other countries. Are the figures not working out to your doom and gloom predictions?

This has been the case when reporting hospitalizations as well as deaths all along.

Under testing of the population? That’s one claim that can’t be aimed at the U.K. nowadays.

It can be, if people who are infected and a risk to others, are not tested and isolated appropriately. We may be testing more per citizen than other countries but we are towards the top of the league in terms of infections.

Hospitals need to be resourced appropriately, and their ability to catch up with the backlog of other health problems supported. The public can help to support this, for our own benefit, by getting vaccinated and adjusting their behaviour appropriately.

Ok so how can you compare infections in the population if you are not comparing testing.

The U.K. are testing 16.5 per 1000

Germany are testing 1.2 per 1000

Could it be we know we are near the top of the league of infections because we test more people?

I was admitted to hospital via ambulance in December for breathing issue. The Paramedics wanted to take me in due to experiencing covid symptoms.

Yet I was never once tested in the hospital.

Global COVID deaths last week were up more than 20.6%, with cases increasing by 6.5%, Maria Van Kerkhove, PhD, the World Health Organization (WHO) technical lead for COVID-19, said today on Twitter. Global cases have been rising for 5 consecutive weeks, and deaths are usually a lagging indicator of increased activity.

About 69,000 people across the world died from COVID-19 last week, she said. "This is an absolute travesty, because we can prevent deaths. Think this pandemic is over? Think again."

must be a glitch in the computer system; maybe nhs were understaffed due to the pandemic and the numbers got mixed up; over 50% discrepancy is a serious figure so there’s definitely something not right , the hospitals were over ran I heard on the news so no way this story could be true .

People are admitted to hospital when their condition deteriorates. The usual cause is respiratory distress. Many people are admitted with that problem, in non-pandemic times it will be commonly caused by asthma or pneumonia. By the time the respiratory distress is evident, the virus infection will be nearly over and the bodies massive over-reaction to the infection will be starting. Separating those with a covid infection from those with problems not caused by covid is pretty vital…hence the testing. An infection with the sars-cov-2 virus is itself not going to cause death. It leads to death though, via other routes
