Maybe it will be a good test regarding infection rates?

60,000 at Wembley Stadium might give us an indication of what to expect when restrictions ease?

No confusion.

Your govt doesn’t care if you live or die.

Although, if you have little money, they’d prefer you did the latter.

The NHS wouldn’t be under any strain if govt hadn’t cut it to the bone over the past decade+.

Didn't over 2000 Scots test positive after the their match with England, only 400 of them where from that stadium though.

Masks are advisable whilst infection levels are very high and growing exponentially. It's thoughtless to do otherwise. Quite simple to grasp really. Especially when there are people who are vulnerable, such as after cancer treatments that have damaged their immune systems, who are amongst us and may be our loved ones.

A large number of (ticketless) Scots travelled to London and partied in the streets and in Hyde Park though

I see this being a huge super spreader event. Hardly anyone I saw today had respect for infection control. Also heard fans without tickets had gained access to the stadium (so not tested)

I think it's not that simple, some are worried as they will be or have loved ones who are vulnerable and see this grand opening as something to be concerned about..

The feel good clichés put out by the government are already being amended and what we need is clarity..

Masks will still have to be worn in crowd places which is good news but seeing what has occurred from recent events will or could have an impact if infection rates go up but the government isn't concerned as much as most of the other MPs are be cautious

It seems the messaging will be "different" today. The emphasis will be on mask wearing in crowded places rather than you won't have to wear masks or social distance.

I think last night was a great test for all this pandemic situation.

We have to wait a few days to see what will happen within the days.

Tbh, I noticed a lot of people with no masks in the shops and supermarkets in the last few months. People are tired. We wear masks but we are also tired. The same mask used for the weeks.

Be realistic - how many of you use a new mask every time.

I know someone who went, you only had to scan the QR on the test theb answer a few questions. You could easily lie or just not do it at all.

"Wait for about a quarter of a million infections being reported in 3 or 4 days.

How do you know this"

By simple examination of the graphs showing the increase of covid infection in the UK. Number of reported new cases has been growing on a steady exponential curve. At this stage of the curve on previous waves the country had already implemented strong measures to slow infection, and the curve still continued upwards for a number of weeks. This time we are doing absolutely nothing, and in fact removing the very few remaining control measures. There is now nothing to halt the upwards curve until the population limit has been reached.

Meanwhile we are running a series of super spreader events, the largest of which so far was last night. "Freedom" day will be another such event. Each of these events will cause an instant doubling or more of infections.

Currently at least 1% of the population of the UK are reported active cases of covid. This means we are less than 7 doublings away from 100% exposure.

There is still more than a quarter of the population either unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated, past experience indicates that unless they take extreme self-protection measures, all of these will contract the virus.

As for the vaccinated, indications are that a high level of them will become infected when exposed to covid. The vaccination programme is very obviously not reducing the slope of the infection graph. The only hope is that severity of illness after vaccination does seem to be much reduced, but whether this reduction will be enough to prevent catastrophic overloading of the health system remains to be seen.

Like it or not, the UK is now the test tube for the big experiment. Not herd immunity, that boat has sailed. What we are now testing is herd infection.

I fear you are right there, Polly.

It feels like the whole Covid response has been "reframed" from one of protection to one of infection.

This is not accidental in the slightest. It's actively being encouraged. There are going to be long-term health outcomes to some unlucky individuals.

If someone wanted to test transmissibility, you'd do it when all folks had been vaccinated, wouldn't you ? Not when 25% or so are not or only partially vaccinated.

That's reckless, bordering on wilful harm and malfeasance.

State-sponsored harm.

State-sanctioned Bio-Terrorism.

Morally repugnant and reprehensible.

If you had 100 guinea-pigs and vaccinated 75 of them, and then introduced all of them to a virus, the outcome, whilst unknown until measured, is going to cause some harm.

Some are going to suffer unnecessarily.

I cannot understand this mentality, it's an anathema to me.

Primum non nocere

"Masks do not work, look at the evidence "

Incorrect. In public, masks can work if everyone is committed to and does wear an appropriate mask correctly. The virus is an airborne infection -so, surprise, surprise - barriers that prevent some of the viral particles from being exhaled/inhaled actually reduces the risk of infection. Higher grade mask filtration increases the levels of protection.

The greater the amount of the virus entering the body, the greater the risk that you became infected.

Would you have surgery and insist on theatre staff not wearing masks?

I believe that the proportion of the population that are concurrently infected with covid will skyrocket. In any exponential type growth curve, it is 50% of the population that all catch it during the final doubling period. As to what that will mean in terms of harm to the population, I have no idea. And very importantly, the government has no idea either or if they do they are deliberately hiding and ignoring whatever information they are privy to. Certainly a very large number of reputable doctors, microbiologists, virologists and scientists of other relevant disciplines are totally appalled at this experiment being carried out by the government.

If any medical enterprise, university, company or individual were to perform such an unethical trial they would be liable to legal recriminations regardless of the success or failure of the experiment. In an experiment being performed without proper explanation of the risks to those taking part in it, and without obtaining any sort of informed consent from those being experimented upon, if it should all go tits up (to use a scientific expression) those running the experiment would be personally liable for charges up to and including murder.

If I have spent all this time trying to do as much as possible to keep myself and others safe, I will not be dropping my guard now just because a fuzzy haired politician says so.

The messaging from scientists matters and taking sensible precautions also matters.

I will not drop my guard now. We are in unknown territory. Relaxing things gently and gradually is fine - just sticking to an arbitrary date is not.

Some surveys suggest that the vast majority of people have kept their masks on.

Common sense says that one can continue to live with cloth on one's face, and limiting contact.

We all live our lives and take personal responsibility in our own ways.

If it turns you on to misrepresent prudence as fear, you do you, but I still see prudence as prudence.
