So Merkel is coming to UK to discuss covid passports. I have a suspition that the restrictions have been extended last month just because there was not an agreement on this. What do you guys think?

Sounds feasible. I also suspect that travel restrictions will ease to coincide with the parliamentary holiday period.

I think people are looking for reasons to be pissed off, sometimes a spade is just a spade.

I don't think domestic restrictions in the UK concern Merkel at all.

Reading some of the stuff being publicised in Germany, Merkel has been saying she is concerned with the new Delta (plus) variant.

Personally, I think this restriction (the 14 days quarantine imposed on anybody travelling from the British Isles) is mostly a political lever and hopefully she will now allow doubled jabbed people in.

Perhaps I should have been clearer, sorry.

I don't think what the UK does within the UK (pubs, clubs, masks) concerns Merkel. Discussing passports will be things like, who gets to travel to Germany and under what circumstances, from the UK.

True, but it would have been difficult for gov to justify lifting restrictions AND ban travelling in europe while the rest of europe does. It would have been a tough position. Perhaps extending the restrictions bought the gov time so that they can align with EU on the protocol.

Oh that's easy, they can spin it as the EU being mean again, rather than protecting themselves given we now have more cases than the whole EU put together

No idea, I'm lost. Damn Sat nav!

Just a heads up on a travel pass scam thats going about .

I revived a text this morning telling me to click on a NHS link to apply for my travel pass .

Once I'd clicked on the link it said to continue it would cost me £4.99 ,I was suspicious of it so didn't continue .

A short while ago I was showing my daughter the message with the link and now when you click on the link it says the account has been suspended so I'm guessing many people have reported it and that's why

Personal take.

Foreign holidays should be off for another year. It doesn't matter that we are 'mostly' vaccinated. Many others in many countries are not. If any of us carry it to them asymptomatically, then we are simply adding and prolonging the problem overall on a world scale.

Merkel is right. As we are in our restrictions on German travel (and others) too.

I think what she says is probably likely, that restrictions have been due to the UK having been a huge source of potential Delta variant infections.

The UK has largely been a potential massive risk to others' health over the last 1.5 years. We were dire last year and it was just the NHS success with vaccines earlier this year that created the major changes. After keeping our borders open, with tens of thousands flooding in from India, we degraded our standing again. So we get what we deserve from others
