"So Merkel is coming to UK to discuss covid passports. I have a suspition that the restrictions have been extended last month just because there was not an agreement on this. What do you guys think?" Sounds feasible. I also suspect that travel restrictions will ease to coincide with the parliamentary holiday period.

Personally, I think this restriction (the 14 days quarantine imposed on anybody travelling from the British Isles) is mostly a political lever and hopefully she will now allow doubled jabbed people in.

" Perhaps I should have been clearer, sorry. I don't think what the UK does within the UK (pubs, clubs, masks) concerns Merkel. Discussing passports will be things like, who gets to travel to Germany and under what circumstances, from the UK.

"I don't think domestic restrictions in the UK concern Merkel at all." True, but it would have been difficult for gov to justify lifting restrictions AND ban travelling in europe while the rest of europe does. It would have been a tough position. Perhaps extending the restrictions bought the gov time so that they can align with EU on the protocol.

Oh that's easy, they can spin it as the EU being mean again, rather than protecting themselves given we now have more cases than the whole EU put together
