Because it is the fourth variant. They will all be called consecutive letters of the Greek alphabet from now on.

World Health Organisation was concerned that labelling variants by their locations could fuel hate crimes.

They also suggested the scientific names are too complicated to remember

To stop the blame being attributed to countries and blaming them. The virus will always mutate the same way that all viruses do. There is too much hate and blame in this world already

Searching can be your friend:

“Global health chiefs renamed coronavirus variants in an effort to remove any stigma associated with the countries they are associated with.

Under the new system devised by the World Health Organisation, variants are no longer identified by the area or country of their discovery, such as the Indian, South African or Kent strains.

Greek letters have instead been assigned to the strains in the order they were designated variants of concern, starting at Alpha, for the strain first detected in the UK last year.”

Because it's all a load of utter bollocks. There have been virus variants since the dawn of time. This is why we have an immune system.

"Yet still Kent and South African variant on news coverage ?. Why only change one and not Kent etc ?."

They have. Why the news coverage you watch doesn’t use them I can only guess at..

Variants of concern:

Delta - Indian variant/B1617.2

Gamma - Brazil variant/P1

Beta - South Africa variant/B1351

Alpha - Kent variant/B117

Variants of interest:

Epsilon - B.1.427/B.1.429

Zeta - P2

Eta - B.1.525

Theta - P.3

Iota - B.1.526

Kappa - B.1.617

There are however two problems with the new system:

1. (Minor) The greek alphabet is not that familiar to a lot of people, I can easily see confusion arising between eta and iota, phi and psi etc.

2. (Major) It only has 24 letters and nearly half of them have been assigned to variants already. Cue running out of letters by about August and having to find a new system...

Or perhaps when we get to the Omega virus the show will be over, the curtain will come down...

The big problem is when the variants start mixing and it'll sound like the world is under threat from American fraternities

Oh no, it's Phi Kappa Delta (enter frat boys drinking and coughing everywhere)

(Furstlig is apparently Swedish for regal - crown, corona, like, I amuse myself. I have no idea if IKEA add diacritics randomly, but I do *shrug*)

The idea of reducing regional stigma through naming the variants is sound.

Problem is there is such a delay in getting them named, and so much confusion, that they’re just using both names. So it’s no better.

We live in a day and age where people are brainwashed beyond the point of no return. Sadly there's no hope for them and they will never wake up from the coma state they are in. There's a load of them on here too.

Your reply is showing a huge amount of ignorance about basic biology and physiology - one day you might be aware of that.
