The sun is shining, it’s Friday, and today marks another positive forward step out of Covid restrictions. Another return to normal life and being able to do what we want.

Anyone else feeling great today ?

There is to be a 'green watch list', so there will be 2 weeks notice of any country likely to go down to Amber status, giving people plenty of time to get home, if they are affected

America still has a travel ban on people entering. They recently raised it to 'don't travel'.

Yes it is. It was a mess last year with people trying to get home, in 48 hours.

I live in the USA too and am not long since back and there is a lot of talk there of things opening up between them and the UK. But then just after my return they made it a red country so I am not as confident at the moment.

Covid rates in NY aren't so good either, it's the 4th worst state at the moment

I just stayed in the USA and kept an eye on it. Still cost me about £350/400 in covid tests to return though, and I shopped around!!

Today's announcement will be a huge disappointment for some.

Limited countries on the green list.

This is only part of travel restrictions being lifted.

Basically an experiment to see where we go from here.

No Spain, Italy, France, USA , initially.

Airports are expecting long queues.

Travel companies already increasing prices.

I don’t need it to be green to book. I’ll book some

Places if amber. I don’t fancy hotel quarantine but I can handle isolating at home. Prices I’m sure will boom but that’s to be expected.

As things stand at the moment, you would have to add at least £600 (for a couple) onto your costs because of the greedy twats overcharging for PCR tests.

"As things stand at the moment, you would have to add at least £600 (for a couple) onto your costs because of the greedy twats overcharging for PCR tests."

£175 each we paid for the mandatory day 2 and day 8 tests. So £350 for a couple. I think you will find these costs will rapidly drop or are subsidized as travel companies will look to remove any obstacles to people booking holidays.

I still don’t get why people are so fixated with a holiday when there is still a global pandemic raging.

Stay the f*ck at home and put your money into Britains tourist industry which has been all but demolished ..that's probably the best thing you or any others just itching to go abroad again can do.. For so many other reasons I haven't time to list them on here..

If you go through a package company then I suspect there will be good offers. If I were to go to Spain (probably on amber list) via Easyjet as things now stand, I would have to pay £110 for a test here, pay for another test on arrival, and another £110 for a test when I get back. Then self isolate for 10 days. A wet weekend in Skegness suddenly sounds enticing.

the British tourist industry isn't helping itself though. I normally go to Cornwall. This year the same trip I normally take would be over £2400 with fuel, the caravan, food etc... more than double what it normally is where I go. So I've got my eye on a holiday let in Sicily near modena beach instead. And even with cost of the tests currently... its cheaper by far than having a week in the UK.

I don't direct.. Look it up in the dictionary! .. The verb, adverb and adjective of the word . It's easy to understand.

None fit my comment.

So as I suggested anyone holidaying in the uk will benefit a struggling uk hotelier on the coast.. That to me is a bit more safe and possibly even something patriotic.

If we stay and holiday at home for one year it will help support the uk economy rather than hand it over to countries outside the UK..

What about the money I pay to the airline for my flight ? What about the staff at Heathrow, baggage handlers, check in staff, air flight attendants, pilots etc. What about the money I spend in the airport on luxury goods ? What about the parking company I pay to park my car at the airport. The travel insurance I take out. Etc etc.

If you want to stay at home, that’s your right. But what is your obsession with expecting others to do the same. In 10 days time it would appear UK citizens can leave the country if they choose. That’s personal choice for all. There’s no right or wrong whether someone chooses to holiday abroad or in the UK. But that’s down to each person to decide for themselves. Not you

The whole patriotism argument sounds very similar to the “look after our own” argument lol!

If COVID-19 taught anyone anything it’s life’s too short to not do what makes you happy... and I’m happier or an all inclusive beach with a cocktail somewhere! Haha x

Most if these have been on furlough or self employed grants for a year..

What it won't do is look after the pubs, hoteliers, campsites theatres etc who have had no help in most cases..

I'm all for supporting uk business ....saying that the only people who will benefit are the uk hotelier...if i holiday in this country i get zero value for money ...

I'm all for being patriotic bla bla bla.... have you seen the prices our good ole hotel owners are charging for this years breaks away!

Weekends in NYC are great. I managed to be on land there for 50 hours a few years back. Felt so strange going that for for 2 nights, but still worth it!

So as I suggested anyone holidaying in the uk will benefit a struggling uk hotelier on the coast.. That to me is a bit more safe and possibly even something patriotic.

If we stay and holiday at home for one year it will help support the uk economy rather than hand it over to countries outside the UK..

It won't support the pilots, cabin crew, airport shops and bars, taxi drivers, airport check-in and security staff, cleaners etc

Most if these have been on furlough or self employed grants for a year..

What it won't do is look after the pubs, hoteliers, campsites theatres etc who have had no help in most cases.. "

Ok so we all need to only holiday in the UK. And also call ahead before spending any money anywhere to make sure I only spend money with people that haven’t received any financial support whilst closed ?? U really know how to sap the fun out of a holiday don’t ya

I’m desperate to go back to Sardinia, Italy. Looking at taking the kids in the 6 week school holidays.

I have however booked a Monday-Friday break to Devon for the may school holidays & a long weekend in a log cabin with a hot tub in November so far.

Now to find a nice weekend away with the girls for a over due catch up.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a holiday & going abroad it’s an important part of our lives, but these are desperate times. I will Walt."

Yes, all part of the problem, impatience. It would just be nice to have a safe and stable situation in the uk and wait for things to improve worldwide. There’s no shortage of fun to be had here and despite missing our USA road trips we are not considering anything this year.

Have there been some announcements on holidays? I've not heard any news today.

I was out with my friend drinking coffee, eating a bacon & egg roll on a golf club balcony fantasising about being around a glorious pool contemplating what cocktail to have next and what to wear for dinner.

Can't do that in Great Yarmouth, well you can but it's not the same!

true but the hospo industry in the uk has had a hamering aswell, i know loads of people in the industry that have had to claim either uc or other benifits, would it not be a good idea to support them so they can earn money before we worry about other countries, and yes i do feel for those other countries, but i care more about people in the uk, it only costs us all more if people cant work here

I don’t want a holiday. I just need to be in Turkey before mid June to sort out paperwork. After that it will make it a nightmare. But I’m fucked if I’m gonna go and then have to be quarantined in a fucking hotel at 1700 quid for the privilege. It’s a nightmare.

"So it’s finally here. Today we will find out where and when we can travel again. Who else will be spending some money today on some trips ?

Hoping the States is Green so we can have a weekend in NY later this month

I’ve got a free trip to Dubai that I have to use this year or lose it. I’ve also paid for New York in December.

Hopefully enough time for both to go green on the list

Two nice trips to enjoy. Lucky u

Been postponed twice! Not lucky at all haha

And the Dubai has to be used this year and they’ve said they won’t extend it.

NY in December is magical. We were there for Xmas a few years ago.

I did mid Dec 17..... Stayed at the Hilton on 42nd just near Time Square - and it pissed down all weekend! "

I was there Dec 2017 paid for by the lovely people at Smooth Radio. It snowed most of the time for me haha

Did some hunting around. (Not looking for a holiday per se, just interested what is out there).

Search on Tui

7 nights to Portugal from Jun 1 2021

2 Adults, 0 Children

Sort by low to high

7 Nights in The Algarve (Self Catering) : £444.00 per person (1 room left)

failing that, 7 nights in Maderia (Breakfast only), £518.00 per person

Entry back to UK Requirements from a Green Country

1. Complete a Passenger Locator Form 48 hours before you're due to return

2. Take an antigen (rapid flow) test within the 3 days before you begin your journey home

3. Take a PCR test within the first 2 days after you get home.

You will be required to show a negative RT-PCR test result for SARS/COVID-19 taken within 72 hours of departure

Tui can provide test kits at £20 per person for requirements 2 and 3.

Algarve

2 Adults £888.00

Airport Parking : £55.00

Tests : £40.00

Total = £983.00

This excludes spending money. No idea but £100 a day for 2 people to cover lunch and dinner seems reasonable.

+ £700.00

Total = £1683.00

Alternative search for a week in Cornwall in a cheap hotel (B&B), approx £465 base cost for 2, plus £700 for spending money, so £1165

I have no idea if those are reasonable prices as we've never done a package holiday.

I've looked at Israel hotel prices for 2 years or so and they can generally be quite expensive, higher than much of Europe. Tel Aviv has many hotels and I stayed there many years ago - it wasn't too cheap off season. I'm guessing it's about a limited commodity, with high demand for it.

We've had a holiday in Madeira booked since August 2019 - postponed it for 12 months last year, band I'll be cancelling it on Monday.

Masks mandatory on the plane, PCR tests required, 50% max capacity in bars & restaurants, limitations on swimming pools and excursions - it's not the holiday I booked.

Gutted, but we'll be looking for somewhere in the UK again this year

Hoping more countries are added soon. Booked Amalfi Coast for Sept - everything crossed.

However, it's more than obvious that the gov is actively trying to discourage people from traveling: highlighting costs of isolation, green-listing countries that don't accept U.K., citizens, wheeling out the boarder force chap to warn of long queues at the boarders.

It's an overly cautious approach, in my opinion. Too much handholding to the detriment of the economy and mental health of the population.

Indeed I didn't and missed that one. I was quickly throwing rough costs together for comparison and missed it. Thank you.

And I suppose as well as the cost to and from Cornwall, most folks might do an extra tank or two for sightseeing as well. It all adds up.

the British tourist industry isn't helping itself though.

I strongly suspect that this is going to be the norm for at least the next 12 months ahead. Why ?

Hotel loses 100K turn over in last 12 months. Fortunately, owners are able to service their existing debts or obtain emergency bank loan.

When things open up again, and to get the extra debt down, hotel needs to raise prices.

This can backfire if there is a lot of competition in the area, But if a lot of competition has gone bust/bankrupt, there is less supply to the punters, so prices can rise without too much bother.

Of course, the market decides eventually.

"Supply & demand. As long as their is enough demand, which for a period there will be, then people will pay inflated prices. "

Spot on.

The best way to drive prices down in a demand-driven economy is to reduce demand, and that is by constraining your own demand and changing lifestyle habits.

I think we'd all had good "practice" at that over the last 15 months.

Everything I have bought since Mar last year has been on Amazon or other e-tailers. That's enough time to bed in as a lifetime decision never to need the High St shops ever again.

The money I have saved through not impulse buying has been eye-popping and I suggest some other folks have also come to the same conclusion.

It's really made me realise how much marketing affects the individual and how much pointless crap we buy that isn't essential.
