Getting staff??

A friend of mine runs a pub, and he’s struggling to get staff, he’s been advertising for 6 weeks now and had 3 enquiries?? I thought people would be bombarded with cv’s with all the redundancies and businesses that have closed? He’s lost 4 staff as they found work elsewhere but only decided to tell him once furlough was ending, and one refused to come back as it seems harder work!!!!

Has furlough spoiled some or has Covid make people more needy??

Tbf when i worked for Greene King the kitchens on average where like 30% short staffed on average across the company and that was like 2 years ago

It’s the same all over the place, I have been looking for staff for my marketing business. Both here in Spain and in the Uk. No one wants to work. We are starting to look for staff for the bar. Hopefully that will not be as bad as it was for the marketing company!

Maybe he us not offering the rate for the job ? There could be a number of factors associated with his pub or his reputation in the trade.

this is happening with care too it was hard to employ pre covid but now no one is interested its a real struggle to fill gaps we are the best paid in the area too and its not just carers its domestic and kitchen ... you would think with so many out of work that these would be easy jobs to fill

Having recently decided on a look for something new, and being in retail for the past few years for minimum wage, i expected to find something even with covid around. My experiences in many fields (retail, security, driving, hospitality) and references are good, however all i get is

'too old - not in so many word of course'

'fixed term or temp contracts - Not leaving a full time permeant for that am i.

'come do a few shifts and see how it goes - free labour before sorry not suitable

'zero hours contract - but we promise you will get lots of hours (verbal assurance only of course)

so yeh there are issues around getting jobs, but the employers are not all innocent in this

I am not suggesting that anyone or their companies posting on this thread is like that i assure you just my personal observations.

Didn't companies actively recruit in those countries, as there was a shortage of people who wanted to work in this country.

Im on UC after leaving work due to mental health reasons

There’s a problem right there ‘minimum wage’. Minimum wage says you don’t value your employees. It’s says “you’re not worth more than the government tells me I have to pay you”. Everyone knows it might in rare cases just about be possible to ‘live’ on minimum wage, but it certainly isn’t possible to have a ‘life’ on minimum wage.

Statutory maternity pay is £151.97 a week and you only get it if you've been employed by your employer for 26 weeks continuously by the "qualifying week" of the pregnancy (that being the 15th week before the expected due date, otherwise known as the 25th week out of a 40wk pregnancy). It's peanuts and is clearly nothing like an incentive to sit back and have kids. I'm the main income earner and SMP brought my wage down from the equivalent of almost £40k p/a to £146 a week, at the time. I had to start my mat leave a month early because of the onset of what I now know is a permanent disability. I went back to work when my daughter was 4 months old, newly disabled, on crutches and still pumping breastmilk. Mr KC did not qualify for any paternity anything at the time, because he'd not long started a new job at the time I found out I was pregnant. And his income was (and is) significantly lower than mine.

Yes there is something wrong if people can’t live on £8.91. It means rent, transport, gas/electricity, quality fresh food costs are too high. But why do you expect people to just ‘live’ rather than have a ‘life’?

There is always a fine line between paying decent wages and keeping your prices competitive. The wages have to be paid by the profits that are made. Higher wages require higher profits which means higher prices for the consumer.

I run a business in the motorcycle industry and 3 years ago I had a vacancy and received 3 applications. The same vacancy came around at the beginning of April and I had over 20 applications. Most of whom were either made redundant recently or fed up of being on furlough.

I earned £2.80 an hour working at Matalan when I was at sixth form in 2003 ish. There's absolutely no way I could have done anything other than put diesel in my car to take my son to nursery and to get me to/from college. It was a pittance then and I was treated like utter shite by both the company and the customers. I was perfectly happy to quit

I would of been a paid a tiny bit more than you as a Kitchen Manager, but was mostly Salary so probably worked out less per hour overall. I would never of been able to live on my wage alone, especially in this area. the only time i was able to was when i lived and worked as a head chef in a Hotel

It's hard. Really hard.

I'm always the person they phone if someone calls in sick coz they know I need the hours.

If it's quiet tho and not many bookings you get sent home. You don't get paid for the hours you lose, you just lose them as you know.

I want to get out of the industry but just don't have the confidence.

You are quite right.. Whilst there are many deserving cases who have been thrown a lifeline with the furlough scheme there are unfortunately huge numbers who have taken more than 20k each ( so a married couple got 50k in some cases last year ) for doing absolutely nothing! .. Worst still the self employed who took the grant and have carried on working just as hard now all driving new cars or getting lots of home improvements .

As someone who didn't qualify or need the furlough and have worked non stop since the start of Covid and no doubt who is going to get an increase in my tax rate because of the furlough payments needing to be paid back into the government coffers. I can't help feel they could have worked things out a bit fairer for everyone .. And as for the people who are self employed can't work and don't qualify for the self employed grant.. That's really very unfair on those people I think .

Reality is anyone who could work and find a job should have done that.. So many now are used to doing nothing and getting paid for it unfortunately.. Especially now the finer weather is coming.. More beers and bbq in the garden!

Course as I say there are some deserving cases.. But yiu can't help but wonder if it was some sort of guarantee of votes that was the real aim behind the very generous support scenes the govt handed out last year ?

I don't think there's much anyone can do about it now though.. :/

I used to be involved with induction training for a handling agent at gatwick airport, the beginning of the course there was a room of 30 people. When they found out the shift patterns, the start times, the people they have to deal with. At the end only 5 people finished the course, 2 of them left in the first two weeks.

The people that would both pick up hospitality jobs are usually young people, quite often uni students in lots of places. None of us have had jobs for ages, so we've had to work out how to make ends meet in other ways. Some have taken different types of work, others are living off of student loans, but unis are still in session and more students than usual are having to resit this year. It wouldn't surprise me if the fact that young people not having access to the vaccine until recently, life stress rejigging plans, and generally just the lack of desire to be in a job that offers no job security, high stress and little pay has anything to do with it.

The student work force has had a lot of time to think about their own self worth, and since things are still warming up we are still making old budgets work (also our student loans are still getting paid). Give it a month, workforce will be vaxxed, broke, bored and wanting to party

You are quite right.. Whilst there are many deserving cases who have been thrown a lifeline with the furlough scheme there are unfortunately huge numbers who have taken more than 20k each ( so a married couple got 50k in some cases last year ) for doing absolutely nothing! .. Worst still the self employed who took the grant and have carried on working just as hard now all driving new cars or getting lots of home improvements .

As someone who didn't qualify or need the furlough and have worked non stop since the start of Covid and no doubt who is going to get an increase in my tax rate because of the furlough payments needing to be paid back into the government coffers. I can't help feel they could have worked things out a bit fairer for everyone .. And as for the people who are self employed can't work and don't qualify for the self employed grant.. That's really very unfair on those people I think .

Reality is anyone who could work and find a job should have done that.. So many now are used to doing nothing and getting paid for it unfortunately.. Especially now the finer weather is coming.. More beers and bbq in the garden!

Course as I say there are some deserving cases.. But yiu can't help but wonder if it was some sort of guarantee of votes that was the real aim behind the very generous support scenes the govt handed out last year ?

I don't think there's much anyone can do about it now though.. :/

Good for you, personally I don't want to work for minimum wage, zero job security or rights, I don't want to be taken advantage of, I don't want to be harassed at work by male customers like I was before lockdown. I know I'm not alone, at the moment unemployment is effecting young people the worst because we have different expectations. Frankly, I can't pay my bills on "we will call you for your shifts", so while I can cope without any of that nonsense I will.

I'd rather be poor and not work in hospitality than work in hospitality and it be the same as what it was before, I imagine it's way worse now with all the new guidelines and restrictions to follow

There’s a problem right there ‘minimum wage’. Minimum wage says you don’t value your employees. It’s says “you’re not worth more than the government tells me I have to pay you”. Everyone knows it might in rare cases just about be possible to ‘live’ on minimum wage, but it certainly isn’t possible to have a ‘life’ on minimum wage.

I'm a waitress, live on my own so only one wage coming in. Minimum wage just about covers my bills on a good month.

I'm an assistant store manager in higher end retail (big name luxury brand), salaried position so expected to work stupid hours without any extra payment and my hourly rate (for a supposed 37 hour week but I never do less than 40-45)equates to around £1.05 an hour more than minimum wage. Being furloughed on 80% wages effectively took it to less than minimum wage but bills all still got paid on time etc although it has been very tight admittedly. Other half is self employed (and has had very little help from the supposed safety net during covid) so we rely on my income to cover the essentials. By savvy shopping we survive but it's frustrating to both be working and yet be worse off than those who don't /won't work.

Maybe take a reality check?

No. One owes anyone anything.. It's hard not to agree that there are far too many out there with a hand out looking for free money.. When there are some jobs out there you can work your way up in.. Reality is people in good jobs worked for them and made sacrifices in their lives and finances to get there.

These days lots of opportunities out there on apprenticeship schemes which avoid the big debts a student had and still let's people achieve a qualification.. The issue is there are people who won't do anything to better themselves because it is easier to get paid for doing nothing.. It is really time this system was looked at and made a combination of more of a challenge to get so that really deserving people get it and that the benefits received are actually a realistic amount to help support someone back into work and keep the wolves from the door until they do.

Consider if we had less false claimants out there there would be much more money to help support people who really need it :/

It should but because it clearly doesn't then its up to you to change that situation..

Its a bit like how burger flipping and working in a bar was never seen as a career choice.. Just a stopgap for money whilst doing something else.. Uni jobs, study, gap years whatever.. Similarly factory work through agencies etc same idea. That's why the pay was not great.. So most people knew that and did their best to make sure they moved on.

Regardless of whether a job is good or bad the fact is that now there's opportunities everywhere to gain qualifications and work.. And by gaining qualifications you get to advance within your own work sector.. Team leader manager etc or you move to another career

Staying put and hoping to get much more money just won't work because the whole system is designed for it not to

Iv just looked at the stats and 87% of all benefit claimants in the UK are either in work, have a long term disability or pensioners but some on this thread would have you believe they are all work shy scroungers.

Most have returned to their native countries, and there's not exactly a lot of international travel going on is there ?

The amount of jobs out there is immense, and it's a job-hunter's market. It's actually nice to see employees in a strong position for a change, after many years of working in low-paid jobs for minimum wage.

Offering nat. min wage simply won't cut it now in the new economic climate of staff scarcity.

My friends boss may have to delay buying himself yet another Ferrari this year. He may also need to eat some humble pie when he mentioned at a Xmas party some years ago to my friend that, and I quote, "People like me take bigger risks, so we deserve all the toys. I create opportunity for my staff and create jobs".

Dan Price, co-founder of Gravity Payments, took a $1m salary cut to pay all his staff a minimum $70k wage. Five years on, they are thriving.

Google them and see how pretty much every Fortune 500 CEO isn't exactly enamoured with Dan Price's ideas. But they work.

I think to survive, more than a few more companies are going to have to adopt Dan Price's ideas.

Didn't the end of WW2 also see worker's wages rise due to staff scarcity? Yet we survived and prospered.

If a business cannot afford to pay a living wage, they're not running a business, they're running a sweatshop. I'd also suggest their business model is fundamentally flawed too if it relies on low wages to "break even". That is not a sustainable business model, as we are now seeing.

Our project works with the long term unemployment and we are inundated by requests from employers for staff more than we could ever hope to fill.

We just don't have enough job ready job seekers to met demand.

Care companies are offering free cars, insured just add petrol for personal use to any door to door carers and they still can't fill the posts. Many used overseas workers who due to covid and brexit have returned home and British workers won't accept the poor working terms and conditions now they know they are in demand.

Not correct. Price rises for things like rent, utilities, food etc have far outstripped the rise in wages.

In the early 90s you could buy a home on a mortgage 3x avg salary with a small deposit. Not any longer.

We've been fortunate to have employment opportunities in the EU, without registration requirements etc, until this year. And vice versa. We've lost many good staff who remain overseas and also the EU staff who have returned to the EU, where there are better prospects and broader choices. We raced to the bottom, forcing ever more onto the lowest living wage, often supplemented with taxpayers' funded benefits.

An area of work with diminished protection, insecure prospects, wages that aren't much different over a decade, isn't very alluring to people. Especially if they have to endure unsociable hours, without compensation for it.

What doesn't get mentioned enough is in work benefits. This is effectively the government (the taxpayer) subsidising the likes of amazan, wetherspons etc so they can pay minimum wage.

Brexit can only be a good thing in starting to reverse decades of wage compression. More employers will have to start paying market rates.

What they probably meant to say is, it's harder work, for less pay during unsociable hours...

I've heard several reports and it seems particularly prevalent amongst workers who have always worked in hospitality and have had to try something else, and found it better doing something else.

Your friend will have difficulty changing the hours or workload, there's one thing he can change to make it more attractive to people though...

I don't get this but I am having an odd day today, why would covid make a person needy enough to not want to do a job?

It sounds like some of his staff decided to do another job instead. There is nothing wrong with that. For other people who don't want to apply, depends on the hours/ days etc, at the moment when things are up in the air he may not be offering enough for people to pack in a job to take his or for them to be able to live.

With hospitality thw last year has shown us how vulnerable it is.

So not only do you have unsociable hours, taxis or walks home coz the buses have finished if you don't drive, get sent home early if it's quiet, get called in on days off when others call in sick or a large group books in late notice, crap pay, no time off on Bank hols or Xmas, school holidays or your own birthday,

you miss family gatherings and friends birthdays etc, you're also on the teeter if something like this was to happen again.

That's without the fact it's a customer facing role where people think they know better than the staff, don't need to follow rules and .... they've had a drink so completely unreasonable a lot of the time.

I’m of the view that living on the dole should be a valid lifestyle choice for some people. Yes they’ll waste their lives, not have nice things, etc, etc, but if that’s what they want to do let them. Daily Mail readers bang on about benefit scroungers but the costs of the unemployed or even the very small number of people ‘fiddling’ the system is tiny, insignificant, an absolute nothing compared to the financial dodging and system gaming of the top 2%. These people hide their money off-shore to avoid tax or they are the massively profiteering companies that register their HQ on some volcanic island to avoid paying tax where they conduct their business. Where has the wealth of governments gone? It’s migrated to the wealthy elite where it does nothing.

Imagine we had a liveable universal basic income that freed up people from the obligation to do bullshit jobs or face benefit sanctions. We would have an incredible burst of creativity spanning the arts, and leisure sectors.

The cold dead hand of capitalism just crushes those at the bottom for the benefit of the top and every ten years capitalism has to be bailed out by the state and repaid by those who can’t afford it and don’t prosper from it.

"I’m of the view that living on the dole should be a valid lifestyle choice for some people. Yes they’ll waste their lives, not have nice things, etc, etc, but if that’s what they want to do let them. Daily Mail readers bang on about benefit scroungers but the costs of the unemployed or even the very small number of people ‘fiddling’ the system is tiny, insignificant, an absolute nothing compared to the financial dodging and system gaming of the top 2%. These people hide their money off-shore to avoid tax or they are the massively profiteering companies that register their HQ on some volcanic island to avoid paying tax where they conduct their business. Where has the wealth of governments gone? It’s migrated to the wealthy elite where it does nothing.

Imagine we had a liveable universal basic income that freed up people from the obligation to do bullshit jobs or face benefit sanctions. We would have an incredible burst of creativity spanning the arts, and leisure sectors.

The cold dead hand of capitalism just crushes those at the bottom for the benefit of the top and every ten years capitalism has to be bailed out by the state and repaid by those who can’t afford it and don’t prosper from it.

I work with people in prison. One of the biggest things that would stop people reoffending is having a stable income, a sense of pride. But no one will employ them. Kind of a catch 22.

There will be a mass shortage of chefs in the UK when you can get a general factory job at 20,000pa based on a 40 hour week , so at £ 10 per hour only 5 says a week and no nasty hours , more time to spend with family , hotels restaurant s etc will have to pay proper money to get staff

Work in a factory normally carries a shift rate for working unsociable hours, pubs don’t do this. Add to the equation the fact that you don’t have to deal with difficult people and you get breaks; you can see why the hospitality industry is struggling to recruit

Well if you are "ultra" rightwing you would want a small goverment and no welfare sysytem. So im not sure how they would scrounge from a welfare system that wouldnt exist

And yet the costs of prison and the costs from reoffending far outweigh the costs of re-education and rehabilitation, or costs of providing support to society to prevent offending in the first place. But the Daily Mail Pearl Clutchers have to get their satisfaction that somebody is ‘punished’ irrespective of the costs to that person or society.

And are these people who ethnicity you're concerned about revealing well known to cohabit in large extended family groups, meaning the claim, although large, will be covering far more people than you typical white British household would contain...

When you break that total down to individual family members the total per person is probably the same. Just because it is a single claim, doesn't mean it is for a single person. You ignore the facts and cherry pick figures that suit your narrative.

That did not work in the 80s crime was rife then.

People were basically committing crime nothing they would just get a slap on the wrist or having there previous 30 arrests squashed for 1 prison term.

I lived through those days on a council estate and spent many a night sleeping in the living room to protect our property.

Supply and demand. Provide meaningful fulfilling work, treat your employees as human beings instead of skivies, give them a career development plan, pay them a salary with paid holiday that they can live on with enough left over for hobbies and interests, and they’ll be hammering on your door for a job. So ask yourself what can you offer an employee, how can you make yourself an attractive employer.

No i never did also when i was on a salary. Atleast when i was paid per hour i was payed for the hours i worked which i have been known to work 80+ hours a week. Only time we got any extra pay was Xmas day which they tried to take away from us and make us work a longer day by about 6 hours anyway

The marketplace is weird at the moment.

I work for the IT department of a very well known consumer rights org and I've struggled to recruit, largely because the market is booming in certain areas. The decentralised nature of roles is a dual edged sword.

Perhaps they had other aspirations and it took the last year to kick their arse into gear? A lot of people have been shaken from their apathy and moved on to bigger and better things. The jobs market is surprisingly healthy in some sectors (and terrible in others, of that I'm fully cognisant).

Sounds like they maybe reassessed their lives and thought they could do better...
