Long COVID

Doctor suggested I may be suffering from this, although I have no idea whether I’ve had COVID or not.

Is anyone suffering from this, and would they mind sharing more about it?

Thanks

Long covid is someone who is still suffering symptoms many weeks after having covid. My colleague had covid in January and still can not taste or smell.

Mr Smiler had Covid in January. He says that he was lucky because the worst of the symptoms lasted only a couple of days, however he did feel fatigue for a month or so afterwards.

It sounds like the luck of the draw. Some continue suffering and some don't.

Long Covid takes a few forms and varies in severity.

I suffered from persistent fatigue, breathlessness from exertion and severe sinus/eyeball pain. Not nice.

Get plenty of sleep and rest first of all, and get eating well again with fruits and veg. Try and get in to the sunlight, we are definitely solar powered.

Regarding breathlessness, the lungs take a real battering with Covid and lose their “match fitness” as such. With reduced capacity comes reduced oxygen intake, and without enough oxygen we don’t function too well.

Start with doing regular sessions of deep breathing to get the lungs expanding fully again, really fill them up. Get walking on the flat, gradually increase the pace and distance. Once you feel Improvement, progress on to inclines and then stairs.

I’ve been there, it’s hard going but over time it gets easier and eventually you’ll get better.

Somewhere in Co. Down

I have a close family member with long covid. They caught covid through their job working with the public the actual covid itself wasn't too bad just general feeling unwell. But the long covid has been a lot worse their lung capacity has decreased to the point even walking about the house caused them to be completely out of breath they had really bad pains in their back and woke up several times a night very breathless. They are now almost 6 months down the line and thank goodness improving but it's been very slow and there have been some relapses but the doctors say that can happen. The worst seems to be there is no time frame some people recover in weeks others are a year down the line and still not anywhere near back to what they were before they caught it.

I think there have been a few threads about long covid from people here who have suffered, so a forum search could be fruitful. Certainly it's an awful experience, with a still developing understanding of it. There's a fairly high incidence of it that still persists many months after having the infection.

Thank you everyone.

I’m suffering from extreme fatigue, breathlessness, shaking and weak.

I’m forcing myself to walk every day, because I’m a firm believer in exercise being a good cure, plus, my dog does not agree with too much rest.

It is affecting me emotionally too, as I’m normally very fit and active.

I also have random severe neck pain, probably not linked.

Is it worth speaking to your doctor to get a covid antibody test?

My friend thought she had long covid and that's what her GP to rule it in or out. It came back negative. This led to further tests which showed she was suffering from a rare bacterial infection.

Yup.

I had covid in December. Got off pretty lightly at the time.

I still can't smell or taste, now I'm at the point where I can't eat many things due to parosmia. I'm still exhausted all the time too.

It's no fun.

Definitely should be ruled out

Strange for a doctor to offer a suggestion of long covid with no specific history of a covid diagnosis, when it could be a symptom of so many other things

I would definitely request further tests, and hope you feel better soon OP

Sorry to hear that.

Will be an idea to speak to your GP about it.

Also there are several long covid recovery clinics across the country that provide help and rehabilitation, so you can try those too.

I'm so sorry to read about so many posters on this thread experiencing dreadful and debilitating after effects of covid, long after infection. I wish each one of you good recoveries and a return to your normal selves.

.

I think this is clear evidence that covid isn't just a threat to folks in their 80's, and it annoys me when some folks say, "Oh, just vaccinate the most vulnerable and let us all get on with life", because it's evident that covid doesn't follow the rules we think we make for it.

.

I posit that the long-term effect of "long covid" is as much a concern as the short-term, and it could be argued more considerably so, because covid either kills you or you recover/are immune to it, but “long covid” is far more treacherous and sinister.

.

I'd like to see more emphasis of "long covid" in the media and general knowledge out there in the public about it.

.

I'd like to see or at least know that it's being taken in to consideration with long term health planning.

.

I'd also like to see that it gets considered strongly in active mitigation strategies, not handled as an afterthought down the line. I am not buoyed with complete confidence that it’s being taken as seriously as it could by all health services, though some are coming round.

.

Basically, I’d like to see a national if not worldwide discussion about long covid, because for the folks in this thread and further beyond, this is no inconsequential matter and whilst the focus has always been on the number of deaths, we need to care for the living too. Perhaps even more so.

.

I wish you all well.

I had covid in november last year and spent time in hospital with it. I’m still suffering with altered taste and hardly any smell. I get tired really quickly and suffer with headaches too. Unfortunately covid affected my liver and i still have ongoing issues with my liver function and have to have bloods taken every 2 weeks to monitor it. Each person suffers different though. Covid is nasty. I hope anyone who is still suffering overcomes the symptoms soon

As with any illness there are differing levels, if you are not being referred to heart or lung specialists then I would say you are on the less severe scale.

In the main, fatigue is a big issue for many. The best thing you can do is eat well, listen to your body and when required rest. You have my best wishes and hopefully after a few months you should feel in a much better place.

It’s estimated there’s around 2 million diagnosed with LC currently in the U.K. so you’re by no means on your own. There’s also a lot of study ongoing into the issues and I would hope this means treatment and management of the issues will improve steadily.

One supplementary thought, you should be being tested for antibodies to be diagnosed... if you haven’t been then speak to your GP as you need to know if it is indeed covid based and not any other issue.

As in grains, nuts, seeds soaked overnight in water helps break down so the body is able to absorb easily.

I was just going to say this and also my concern is people are gonna be told if their condition isn't obviously explainable than it has to be long covid.

I had a friend who for 10 years was dismissed by her GP and told it was just "women's problems" then she was told it was IBS then Fibromyalgia. Turns out she had none of these and it was endometriosis and By the time they investigated properly it was so severe that she had to have a large chunk of her bowl removed.

So like I said my concern is some people will just be dismissed as having long covid without proper investigation.

I had covid back in January and it was horrible, was in bed for 11 days. Luckily, I didn't have breathing problems, just loss of appetite, exhaustion, sore joints, dizziness and trouble focusing my eyes. Took a couple of weeks afterwards to start approaching something like fit enough for work (though they were on the phone to me nearly every day). But even to this day, I still get fatigued very quickly, and my joints still ache. I am luckier than some in that even with the after effects I am still in a fairly healthy position, but my heart goes out to all those who still have chronic suffering due to this illness.

After having had symptoms of Covid last year, I enacted the following: daily vitamin d supplements; lots of rest and good quality sleep; no rubbish food, just fruit and vegetables; out in the sun for a daily walk; and crucially no pressure to recover or return to former work routine.

It has taken time, but I am getting there at my own pace. I have gone from being utterly exhausted and short of breath to being able to walk several miles daily.

I hope that by the end of this summer I will have fully recoveted , both physically and mentally, and be able to resume work.

Had Covid March last year. Doctors seriously couldn't give a fuck. "Been to Italy? No? Then fuck off you hypochondriac." Finally got it sorted in A&E. That was not so much fun.

Anyway, coughed for another five weeks. Then aches for another couple of months, and immense fatigue which would come out of nowhere until the end of August.

Again, doctors where like "LMF." Joined a support group on Facebook until it got taken over by homeopathic extremists.

Very similar. I had covid just before Xmas and was hit pretty hard. Maybe two months to fully recover with courses of antibiotics and strong steroids to try increase the loss of lung function. Relapse about a month ago, currently struggling to breath and from going from cycling 100k at weekends and gym fit to nothing is mentally hard to take. Hoping to see a specialist in a week or to and see what exactly is the damage. Very dishearting known you can't just shake it off

It's linked, poor sleep, poor breathing will tense up your neck, especially if you have started to breath through your mouth more and not your nose.

Letting you mouth take over breathing and only using your neck and chest muscles instead of your abdomen, will cause the upper chest and neck muscles to tighten up.

I am speaking from experience (Never had covid). I have dysfunctional breathing and it's poorly known about as it gets confused for poor fitness and or asthma.

Get a foam roller and learn to stretch your neck, this works straight away.

You tube is good for this.

Get well soon.

"Thank you everyone.

As someone with ME... BE VERY CAREFUL WITH EXERCISE.

Is it worth speaking to your doctor to get a covid antibody test?

My friend thought she had long covid and that's what her GP to rule it in or out. It came back negative. This led to further tests which showed she was suffering from a rare bacterial infection.

As a large percentage of the human population at northern latitudes are deficient in vitamin D, it has been found that a good D supplement is of benefit to Covid and Long-covid sufferers.

Zinc supplement may also be beneficial.

"

Thanks.

Been visiting physio and osteopath and following their exercise programmes also tried a yoga class, fell over most times but getting the hang of it a bit now.

It's amazing how quick you improve, I look an idiot but feeling so much better and no more painkillers needed.

Paid for the osteopath it was the best £45 I have paid.

Bit embarrassing when she says take off your shoes and shirt and walk towards me, then she does a quick over exaggerated impersonation of me and it's..oh shit, surely I don't look that bad.

Swimming is great too.

Any condition as a result of another after it's perceived period of recovery is known as sequelae. I'm assuming long covid was a name chosen for its simplicity and self explanatory nature. Fatigue is a very common sequelae following a virus. Physio and occupational therapists are ideal professionals to get advice on the best route for recovery. Good luck.

This is highly implausible...there is indeed no test...but there is lots of emerging published evidence on the wide range of long Covid symptoms ...and these people have symptoms that aren't compatible with other diseases (other than similarities with other post viral symptoms where patients developed long term symptoms) and have in some cases been tested for a lot of other diseases and nothing found ...

They need to up the research , rehabilitation will only go so far, and figure out what is happening before the next virus comes along ...SARS...mers...coronavirus ...variants ...real trouble ...

At this stage most if not everyone has gotten some form of COVID either as a full blown dose or a limited fo following thecroinds of vaccines.

I know people they got vaccinescthst suffered enormously.

No one knows why long COVID affects some and not others because people are still free tracking.

The same goes for the people who get infected and the ones who can't seem to be infected by the virus. Each indirperson is different and what can be a nightmare for person A is nothing for person B but person C will have long last effects.

The biggest issue is the lungs. If they are damaged, then your oxygen levels are reduced which will definitely slow you down.

20years from now, we will prob have another version of COPD as a result of all of this.

All you can do is mind yourself as best you can in the here and now

and keep taking the boosters even though they are not fully effective, they limit the effects of the virus and they kind of protect others in the same way.

Iceland, but Aldi is closer..

Caught covid pre-vaccine and had long covid ever since.

Fortunately the fatigue has subsided but the muscles aches and joint inflammation is worse than ever.

King's college and Zoe recently completed a preliminary study into long covid where they have managed to isolate long covid into 3 different sets of symptoms.

Hopefully from this, a more targeted treatment can be found.

I don't know if it's long covid as such but, since I had it, certain foods just taste and smell weird.

For a while, after I recovered, I could smell this cloying "synthetic strawberry" smell everywhere. It's the only way I can describe it. A bit like a strawberry scented soap.

Coffee tasted foul for a while and, while that's improved, it still doesn't quite taste the same as it did. Onions smell like something rotten, definitely not onion, but it tastes fine. I can't stand the taste of eggs anymore which is a shame as I love omelettes.

Weird.

Put a post up about 7 weeks ago reporting joint pain and physio/ exercise, my take up of yoga, or at least my sad attempts at yoga.

Seven weeks on, feel brilliant, far more flexible than pre covid, no pain and no pain medication.

Tend to stiffen up fairly quickly once exercise stops so it's becoming a regular part of life.

Anyone with joint pain, get yourself to a yoga class, give it a whirl, I guarantee you will feel idiotic and look ungainly but the improvement in flexibility and all round movement is amazing.

My wife has joined too, she's found this new flexible world also has advantages.

Have fun.

The truth is doctors and scientists still don’t know if long covid is real or not. Whether it’s physical or psychological, and whether it’s just the same as post-viral fatigue that effects people with other respiratory viruses.

I’d say ask your doc for more info because people on this forum won’t know when even exorcists haven’t figured it out yet

Definitely... I used to do three gym classss a day, and walk 10-20km. Now i can only walk 10km and do one class and it wipes me out

I now get up at 8am instead of 7am..i need the extra time in bed (pre-pandemic i used to get up at 5.30)

Standing still for a photo isn't particularly strenuous.. But i did take a month off videoing and photographing my pants for approval as i was too tired to do it daily and be at my desk in time for work.

Everything is relative ...

That's really good to hear

"I’ve just had the most horrendous nine weeks, never knew I had covid but apparently I did, breathlessness, weak lungs, tiredness like never before. Two hospital visits and I was scared. Now on the mend but still have shortage of breath, I really feel for anyone who had it, I was told that had I not had the vaccine I would have been one of the statistics of the death rates."

I was the same November 2019,

Several visits to doc's. Of course then covid wasn't official. They said just a virus and here's some antibiotics.

I couldn't climb my stairs without stopping and having to catch my breath, choking like a crisp was stuck, which lead to reaching

Was still weak in January 2020, sleeping for 12 + hours.

I'm a yorkshire lady and have horses, a typical cold or flu was nothing. What I experienced was off ny scale of viruses..

Since then I'm now 3x vaccinated and tested positive once, no real obvious symptoms.

Tried to avoid covid discussions and sex but sometimes a good way to filter out people.

"Quite ironic how a family member has been a non believer and saying how he’s young fit and believes in his own immune system to beat it, has now been tested positive for Covid and is like completely incapacitated. "

Is he dead?

Lol

Funnily enough I avoided the ticks in Scotland only to get a tick on my leg back home. Got a red circular rash after about a week. Got antibiotics and hope I don't get Lyme disease later down the line

I was a prison officer in March 2020 and noticed that I was always short of breath. We had to do an annual fitness test… 5.4 beep test etc. that was always hard anyway but I’m 58 and a smoker so no surprise. Then I noticed that all my colleagues (average age early 20’s) we’re always fatigued. Then I did my annual test. I passed but it nearly killed me and 2 guys 30 years younger than me failed. I’d said for a few weeks that it felt like there was something in the air taking everyone’s energy away. It was about 2 months later that COViD was mentioned for the first time. I’ve never recovered and now have bowel cancer (not suggesting that’s related) but it just felt like the whole world lost its energy in those few months. Thoughts?

where the world takes me

"I think you long Covid guys have been listening to too much Jeremy Vine show"

I share a house with someone who was a non drinker, cycled close to 18miles a day and was in their 30s.

They have had long covid for almost 2.5 years, it's effectively left them temporarily disabled and at times been terrifying to see due to things like chest pains, fatigue, "brain fog" and memory loss, shortness of breath, aches and pains in limbs and other things too.

If you think it's fake you're exceptionally lucky you've not met anyone that has it, because it's horrendous to see.

"In Ireland it's very interesting, people with a state job get long covid and the rest get short covid .

"

You are an Ass! I am self employed and already lost thousands of pounds due to Covid. And now I am loosing money every week because my productivity is lower due to covid related cardiovascular issues.

Don't be such a glib walker about issues that effect real people and real lives!
